Thanks for you quick response, clears it up a lot!

Ok, but you answered it just fine nevertheless😏

I was asking about ability to programmatically re-route voices to outputs, but it seems not.

Justmat already answered this question but i want to state that you can make a mix with stackables (or other mults). The outputs are protected and it is even stated in the technial map from whimsical

as a newbie coming in from max I’d love to know about when this ISN’T ok to do

It really depends on the module. One thing about eurorack that people sometimes overlook is that while it is mostly standardized, there are cases like this that aren’t always handled.

Hello!

I am deepening my use of just friends in a multiple-parallel-audio-routings kinda way and am looking for finer control in signal routing to achieve some (fairly obtuse) ends. I am triggering JF via Just Type, with V values not exceeding 3.

Short version:

Can I use a stackable or passive mult (in my case, the Make Noise 4 HP passive mult) to mix multiple channels together?

I found this post indicating such a thing is possible, but a literal MOUNTAIN of info claiming exactly the opposite – and waxing endlessly about the risks. I know this practice is officially supported for 3S, but found no mention in official documentation, or from whimsical directly, that it’s a good idea for JF.

Long version

The idea is to do this in multiple crisscrossing matrices to capture different combinations of patterns triggering different voices through different combinations of signal paths (some of which, in turn, crisscross back on each other), then to change which patterns are coming through which voices (which are also modulating one another) via TT, and to have a chain of mutes to move between a variety of different timbral zones, themselves all effected by hand (and otherwise) modulating JF’s knobs. I’ve been deep in Kria + Just Type (and little else) since March, and this represents a significant increase in applied flexibility for an existing skillset (read: SPINNING JF’S KNOBS LIKE AN ABSOLUTE MADMAN). This is an extension on a long-held idea to use JF like a multi-modal additively-timbred poly by treating its notes as ‘pitched impulses’ to lengthy effects chains.

Connecting outputs to outputs can cause the output stages to be driven in harmful ways. Depending on the output impedance the ratio of the resulting signals in the mix may change, even if no damage is done. Where all the outputs are buffered, passive mixing using a mults may work (though not accurately enough to sum pitch CV). In short, you are better off using mixers for this purpose except in quite specific circumstances.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I understand this as a piece of general advice – I’m curious, though, if this case might be an exception (or, at least, not “break your shit” levels of risk to attempt) due to 1) the particulars of JF and 2) the moderately low amplitudes (3 V peak to peak, mixing no more than four signals at once). Of course, if I had 32 HP worth of mixing utilities in my 6u case, it’d be a whole different ball game but, as is, I’m still hunting for this loophole.

If you just need unity gain you can get units with several N->1 (or N->M) that are very compact. Even if you need gain (or just attenuation) you can get some pretty compact units, and such control gives you a lot more flexibility.

Will it cause damage to just friends, or to my passive mult, to try this idea? I have no need for either gain or attenuation – I can adjust levels internal to JF to get things gelling.

Probably safe. I remember this passage from the Sisters technical map which seems to imply that all Mannequins modules (not just Sisters) are safe to passively mix outputs:

Blockquote
The ALL(OUT) mix can distort when three very loud input signals are used or when all three filters are in self-oscillation. To avoid this, you can passively mix these signals by directly connecting the three output jacks using stackable cables, or a passive mult. Many manufacturers discourage this output-to-output connection, but we’ve extensively tested it with Mannequins modules with no issues, and officially support the practice. This technique is also useful If you only wish to combine two of the three outputs (e.g. connecting LOW(OUT) and HIGH(OUT) with a stackable) while using the third output independently. This will reduce the level of the signal as more outputs are connected together.

Of course it’s possible that the wording is ambiguous and that’s not what they’re implying, but considering that the technical maps came out after all the Mannequins modules released and their tendency to be exceptionally well-written and accurate, I suspect you’re in the clear.

Awesome, gonna go for it in the morning! Thanks so much

There’s nothing to worry about here. Even worst case scenario (all 6 jacks shorted together with 5 at the max voltage and 1 and the min voltage) the current draw is still within spec, and shouldn’t generate more heat than can be dissipated.

All the Mannequins (and Monome) modules have their outputs buffered such that there’s no real-world fear of damaging things. I’ve never ever seen a blown output in the thousands of modules we’ve shipped.

There are a batch of modules (>100 units) currently in production. After this run, additional units will be available quarterly – so there should be no issues of no-stock for 6+ months again.

The retail price will be staying the same for now, and at least the next 12 months (as we’ve already confirmed our cost pricing).

Now back to talking about the thing, rather than how to get the thing…

I like the idea of a super fancy cv/audio/cash mangler/creater called:

Not a bad idea. Something that in some way mimicks with useful signals the assimilation—imitation—confrontation sequence in the 1982 film? Could be very interesting. Not wishing to derail this thread further…

This is great to hear!

Will any of this batch go to retailers or will they just be sold direct from Whimsical Raps dot com?

First batch will be 90% to retailers, so people can hopefully get one w fewer emissions entailed.

(staff notice: lengthy offtopic third-party buying/selling experiences on Reverb have been moved to the appropriate thread in Trade. please keep this Just Friends thread focused on discussing the module itself: patching ideas, tips, Q&A, etc.)

I finally have one! It’s fun! What are your favorite patches/ tricks with it?

Right now it’s in a palette with ansible, sisters, 4 vcas, and maths sitting in front of TTSH.

If you run Ansible in leader mode you can play JF using earthsea like a mini poly synth, or using kria if the cycling patterns are more your thing. Also try attenuating the mix output, running it into 3s ALL, and then monitoring different combinations of the sisters outputs while moving the knobs around – really nice William Basinski broken-organ underwater type vibes. Also in Ansible leader mode (which is basically Just Type), the knobs on JF are all ULTRA playable. You can just practice gestures on those for hours and hours.

Have fun!

Edit: This is more of a “WILDLY CAPABLE” type suggestion that will help you figure out the range of the tools than it is a sort of… “closed system try this and you will hear something pretty.” Very crude in its basic form, but yields something that feels like a pretty complete instrument to me. Remember to put JF in sustain mode so it registers your held key presses
