Do I need an i2C backpack to make that connection?

i’ve had my just friends for months now and have yet to use it as a sound source  one of those modules that benefits greatly with a scope of some sort - I almost always have identity, 3n and 6n hooked up and helps decipher the more nuanced turns of intone/various retriggering behavior. also ansible > just friends as env/cycles > pinging three sisters as a voice is too much fun.

If you’ve updated JF to the v4.0 firmware (I don’t believe any units so far have shipped with this installed) then this enables i2c pullups to provide a little power to the i2c bus. I have confirmed that just connecting Ansible directly to Just Friends v4.0 works well. If you connected more devices than that you might start to have i2c stability problems. Ansible doesn’t have i2c pullups at all so it does rely on some other module to provide power to the i2c bus.

hol up – what’s this last idea?

Like… Ansible leader mode running Kria firing off geode shapes with the mix output going into 3s low (quality just below self-oscillation) or…?

I got myself one last week aswell. Greatly appreciate you asking the question I wanted to read the answers to.

Looks like the latest firmware is 3.2.a6 on their website? Is that the one to update to? (No it is not. V4 is available here)

In sound mode, four voices sharing the same waveform, envelope and fm-depth, each sequenced by its own lane in Kria. And you can still use the gate and cv from ansible elsewhere, like tying sisters to one of the sequences.

Thanks for clarifying!

I was a bit thrown by the use of “pinging” – I’m mostly familiar with this as meaning sending a gate or envelope to a resonant filter to produce a “ping” sound, which doesn’t seem to be what you’re meaning here, based on your clarification (unless I’m still missing something, which is totally possible!). I thought you were talking about something like this patch from commander derks.

edit: just realized violet and gloom are not the same person – great ideas all around regardless! I’ve certainly got an afternoon cut out for me

Patch Mix to FM on JF, go via one of the logic channels on Cold Mac if one is available. Identity to Sisters all, 6n to Sisters FM.

As FM-depth increases and the waveshape approaches an almost impossibly thin square wave some really nice noise emerge.

I usually monitor a mix of the high out and one of the others. Lots of room for variation, from the aforementioned noise to drones and kick-like pings or more complicated patching.

I feel soooooooo good finally taking pam out of this rack. She was my ride or die for 2 years but this combination feels really comfortable in a new way. I’ve gotten so much joy out of my first 3 patches, it’s breathing new life into the format. I think I’ve been p consistently curmudgeonly this year about euro as a train collector hobby. I spent march playing a Morphagene with Hermod and learning every looper on Norns. All by myself.

It’s been so illuminating to collaborate with musicians and see how they use their deeply played instruments as I learn to form my own.

I am glad I waited so long for JF because I feel so confident with kria, maths, and sisters because I made a point of diving very deeply and playing my modules like instruments. Leaving pam is leaving something behind. I’d rather my LFOs weren’t quite so random anymore. Of course now she sits in a perfect micro mutable easel lunchbox, instant fun always. <33

Most of my work lately has been resolving a really big set of compositions, but I’m starting to feel empowered to make new music. I fear it might be my own!

I often feel stupid concerning i2c but just Ansible and JF to have polyphony seems amazing. But I have a few questions.

  • So I make the good connections and firmware updates. Put Ansible in leader mode but anything else to do with Kria or Earthsea ?

  • if I want to return to just JF, what to do ?

Thanks a lot

Open the preset page on ansible and press the top button on the vertical row in the center of the grid, it lights up to indicate that leader mode for JF is active in all the three grid based apps. Set JF to sound and sustain. Another press of the same button returns everything to normal.

Thank you a lot ! Hope to test that asap !

This is a fun patch! Thanks especially for sharing a good use of the mix output, which I have largely neglected.

What other things are people doing with the mix output?

So i think i found a bug in just friends 4.0.
Steps:
Set switches to transiant sound
Put it in JF synth mode and play some notes.
Put it out of synth mode
Put a jack into run now you are in the correct run mode
Set switch to sustain
Now you are not in the correct run mode (should be lpg thingie mode) All the lights are on all the time without triggers and it acts like a normal oscillator.
I think there are also some other things broken in this state but i need to test it further

Can anybody reproduce this? Or do i need to make a video?

Do you think it could be a christmas present or is it more likely to be a new year eve´s gift in 2021? Would be nice to know since we/I wait for a few months of your new batch now .

Trent has said elsewhere that he does not have an ETA and that, if he did, he would have shared it.

Global supply chain is a total disaster rn, and I’d imagine he’s not even getting reliable estimates from people he’s relying on because, frankly, nobody is.

Maybe in the week since this question was last posed things have changed, but given that this has been the situation for eight months, I’d say the best move is to sit tight or find one used (they come up here a few times a month at reasonable prices and, typically, in solid condition).

Hi, I’ve slowly been building up my 6U 84hp system and recently added a JF. It’s joining a Loquelic, Maths, Blinds, Wogglebug, and uO_C. I’ve liked being able to get some pseudo poly sequences (parallel harmony) running uO_C’s sequencer/quantized CV into the v/o of JF in the various sound modes, but since the harmonic relationship is inherently tied to INTONE, I would like a little more control over the equation.

Also, at this point, I’m looking for a more capable clock source than those tied to wogglebug/maths and have been looking at the Pam’s New Workout, which I expect would have plenty of triggers/modulation for my system, including JF. The goal was to drive uO_C with Pams for the vast majority of my sequencing, which would allow some “real” poly sounds once I add another voice or two to the loquelic/JF. However, I have only recently become more interested in the teletype sequencing workflow via Just Type - though I do have some hesitation. It seems that teletype could take the place of my planned Pam’s/O_C sequencing workflow, opening up uO_C for other duties, but also providing what I think could be a major benefit of utilizing Just Type, which as I understand would make JF a complete poly synth voice and leave other voices in my system to provide other duties.

For someone who has never coded before,

  1. Would the learning curve/workflow of Teletype be worthwhile if my primary interest at the moment is Just Type? Obviously, I could get a lot of nice clocking and modulation from Pam’s, but it seems like teletype could play this role adequately and would help unlock the JF.

  2. Would Just Type provide a polyphonic experience that is somewhat intuitive and engaging, or would I be better off leaving these more specific poly duties to softsynths and using JF for its more standard (and still quite unique) features within my system?

  3. Similar to Q1, is adding a teletype to the system defeating the purpose of going modular? While pam’s & O_C are bit more of “black box” than other forms of modular sequencing, I like the low HP footprint, don’t mind the shallow menu diving, and would be able to avoid an extra keyboard.

I know this is kind of a convoluted thought process, but perhaps someone was introduced to the world of teletype through JF as well. This would kind of overhaul the plans for my system and workflow as a non-programmer, but with so many people on the forum using teletype effectively, any help here would be greatly appreciated.

  1. yes
  2. JF is my favorite poly, but I live in a cave and subsist off lichens – ymmv
  3. no. it is not possible for me to describe what will happen to your patching when you start to get cozy with tt, but it is a Good Thing. The only dissenters I’ve encountered on this point never gave it a fair shot to begin with. It is ~nothing~ like making music at a computer. It is building or extending an instrument with simple math.

If you’re on the fence with TT and can afford it, grab Ansible + grid. Less HP and you get JF poly with Ansible Leader Mode (Kria, Earthsea, or meadowphysics controlling JF). Comes with three flavors of dope interface!

I have been getting this behavior but not consistently. It seems to happen after long periods of being in synthesis mode or with lots of switching back and forth?

When it does happen I enjoy the resulting osc, fwiw!
