something to reel in a turbulent year and hopefully bring us into a more optimistic one. finally started exploring ansible as a leader via (kria i2c) tracking jf. really incredible combo. i’m not much into sequencing tbh and usually use jf as a modulation source but here i am - happy new year all!

first patch with jf was very rewarding !

this is FLOOM mode with outputs played by LFOs + cold mac surveying chord crossfades & floom fm ratio. no v/oct needed : )

Sorry for being slow on the mental drawer, but what’s the i2c pin orientation on JF?

I see a white line above the top pin, I assume that is GND, then SCL in the middle, then SDA at the bottom.

Yeah, Peter had been in Chicago, but pretty sure he moved to Asheville to work more directly with them. Great guy, great ear. I brought him down to Louisville before the move and it was a real treat.

Glad to answer! Just Friends is in cycle/sound mode and is slightly detuned via an LFO from Pamela’s New Workout. The other main voice is from Grendel Drone Commander, which is slightly detuned with the same LFO. There are several more LFOs from Pamela’s at different rates. They are modulating Grendel’s filter an VCAs. Hope it makes sense…

Modulation from the mix output in cycle / shape is an absolute trip, and I’m sad I only get one of those outputs from the module.

I’ve tried a few different ways of multing it to cold mac to get related shapes, but the relationships between the different versions often yield, sort of, “blind spots” that make the resulting shapes less varied than just using a different modulation source altogether for other parameters.

I’ve also tried logical operations on the other outputs, but this again tends to yield shapes so closely related to the mix out that they’re not necessarily more dynamic than just using the raw 1n - 6n outs (favoring the rightmost outputs since they are less present in Mix).

I guess I’m looking for ways of creating simultaneous variations on the mix out that won’t be so overtly related as to create relationships that are always “phased together” so that when the mix output is a certain value X the “pseudo-mix out” is not always a certain value Y. I’m tempted to just have like… 4 JFs in shape / cycle only using the mix out, but that would be sooooooooo silly.

Any thoughts?

With only one more mod source (say maths) you have massive cross patching ability, add cold mac into the mix and you could do just about anything I’d imagine. I think you do need a source that is moving at a different frequency to help unlock it. Alternately could run geode mode and cross patch if you have a Teletype.

You can self patch the JF but I think it is important to have multiple modulation sources.

The thing about the mix out is the way it attenuates the different outputs when putting them into the OR circuit. You could experiment with taking individual outs, attenuating them variously before putting them through other OR circuits for a different flavor, or use a VCA to use one channel of JF to modulate the amplitude of another before mixing with other channels in an OR circuit… nearly endless possibilities. As the technical map points out replicating the MIX out would require a big patch, but if youve got the tools you could do infinite combinations of the 6 outs at different amplitudes…

  • MIX jack behavior: Each slope’s output value is divided by its index. The MIX jack then outputs the largest of the resulting values (analog max or “OR”). IDENTITY is divided by 1 (unaffected), 2N is divided by 2, 3Ndivided by 3, and so on. This provides a unique modulation source otherwise requiring a large patch.

Perhaps the Erogenous Tones Levit8 would be an excellent partner to JF… That way you could create various mixes from all six JF outputs and even include the mix out

My preorder hasn’t shipped yet but reading through the technical map this week got me all riled up.

Anyone using theirs with CV manglers, such as NLC’s Let’s Splosh or GENiE?
