tanh springs to mind, but i have never used it

Had the same issue when I first got the 4MS SMR, and found Mutable Streams is an awesome stereo compressor. Since then, I’ve found the WMD MSCL-- a super compact stereo compressor. If you have a disting, it also has a compressor mode, although I haven’t tested it. Also have a tanh, and it’s useful, but adds its own waveshaping. For any module where you’re sweeping frequencies through resonant bandpass filters, a compressor is a big help.

Is anyone running Three Sisters on a Trogotronic power supply?

I recently upgraded the power on my 12U (from two zeuses) and feared my sisters was a nothing more than a beautiful corpse.

Moved it to a Mantis and it’s working fine.

Should point out that it’s the only Mannequins module giving me issues with the Trogotronic power. JF, CM, and W/ are without issues.

I had mine in a Mantis for the first few months and it’s been in a Trogotronic-powered case since the fall. I haven’t noticed a difference. Is yours non-responsive in the latter?

It’s entirely responsive in the Mantis, but acts as if completely bricked in the case with the Trogotronic. Tried it on three of the four busboards in the case to no avail.

Glad to hear It’s not an issue with the specific power, but now I’ve no idea what’s causing it (there’s more power in the case than there was before).

Very strange. Good luck - I wish I could offer more.

I’m running a 3sis in a Trogotronic 168, no issues.

The trog bus boards are unshrouded is it possible that the ribbon cable is backward or off by one set of pins?

Thanks for confirming.

It’s not possible that it was connected incorrectly as I tried swapping the connection to three sisters with ribbon cables previously attached to two functioning modules.

At some point, I’ll try pulling everything apart to isolate the issue. For now, I’ll live with an aesthetically displeasing arrangement of modules.

Hi –

Please see here for an explanation!

Short answer: you probably have an old Three Sisters (pre- June 2017) that has different fuses which get tripped by overcurrenting from your PSU on startup. If you are going to use it with another PSU then you have nothing to worry about - if you want to use it with the trogotronic, you can send it in to us for the fuse replacement or do it yourself if you are comfortable with soldering.

wondering about how you use your three sister couple if you have one
as stereo filter? one for voices and one for filtering?

for the next few months, I’ll be using one Three Sisters and a Mangrove as a “complex oscillator” and the other Three Sisters for filtering / shaping.

If you haven’t already, definitely check @dan_derks 's posts on the main 3S thread. He’s basically the 7th Sister.

Typical uses for myself are generally a combination of the following: non-resonant mixer for Just Friends / multiple voices, “complex oscillator” carrier as @alanza mentioned, inserted into the effects loop of one (or multiple!) channels of a delay, sine wave oscillator with optional FM, pinging percussion source, in between a modulator and carrier in an FM patch to prevent crazy tonal offsets…

These are things you can do with most filters but the flexibility of the ins + outs offer up a lot of options, sometimes simultaneously, that can be useful depending on the context of the patch. To be honest it’s not always my favorite sounding filter but the ability to almost always compliment my patch with the pair is pretty great.

Many thanks! It is an older unit.

Given that it doesn’t appear the fuses are permanently tripped, I’ll probably just keep it in my other case (If the maintenance becomes necessary, I will reach out).

lololol. I’m just glad the explorations are useful to others! :hugs:

so so so stoked for clips :wink:

Can anyone recommend an SF area synth tech for the 3Sis/Mangrove fuse replacements? No problems yet but I use trogotronic cases/power. Me and solder have a rather strained relationship so I don’t trust myself to do it. :wink:

Depending on the production run of 3 sis, you should not have any problems. Also, I’ve been running a late 2017 sisters in a trogotronic 168 for a year with not even a hiccup.

If you do end up needing it done locally, I’d recommend contacting Lance at Vintage Synth Museum in Oakland - I understand he does synth repair and presumably this would be a relatively easy job. Also, it’s definitely worth going there just to see the place!

I want to start off by saying thanks for all the inspiration! This thread was really informative and resulted in me beginning to experiment with 3 sisters as a sound source.

Patch notes:
Marbles Trigger Output 1–> Sisters High Input
Marbles Trigger Output 2 --> Sisters All Input
Marbles Trigger Output 3 --> Sisters Low Input
Marbles X1 Output --> Sisters V/8 Freq Input

Sisters High Output --> Magento
Sisters All Output --> DLD
Sisters Low Output --> Erbe-Verb
Sisters Centre Output --> Pico DSP

Batumi (Sine LFO) is modulating Span on Sisters.

Just wanted to cheer again for the sisters. I switched up my mixer so I lost my EQ; Sisters “spectral mixing” is doing a really nice job of keeping my voices separated. It’s a bit tricky to tune by ear, but once you get it into a sweet spot, it’s a damn fine thing.
