I’ll say it has been easier for me to learn this module by starting on W/Del mode, which has taught me a lot about how to use the buttons and switch to interface with the settings. Mastering it seems like it requires a significant amount of studying the manual along with a lot of practice. I’ll move up to W/Tape once I’m ready for hard mode.

I’ve had w/ for a good few months now - I was running w/syn and delay a lot and hadn’t gone into tape until this past week. I found the interface to be a bit tricky for about a week but it quite quickly became quite intuitive. And after going into tape mode I can confidently say that it’s genuinely the easiest of the three modes to navigate, and quite quickly becoming my firm favourite!
All three engines are wonderful and I’m constantly amazed by how this mini module packs such beautiful smack. I’ve found tape so useful for developing textures that can be enveloped and effected to create some great sound beds.

I finally got around to changing the sd-card on my unit and am super happy to report that this solved the bitcrushing-issue when recording in backwards-playmode. Everything works flawlessly now.

I understand very little about this module so far, but I can recommend a few quick-start steps to have fun right away in the default /Tape engine. This info can be found elsewhere, but maybe put together like this could be helpful for some.

Like me, right off the bat you may have experimented and changed some settings, leading to extra confusion. I would start by resetting the /Tape engine to defaults.

Enter Loader

(hold) RECORD + PLAY + LOOP

Reset /Tape engine to defaults

Select the /Tape engine. The /Tape engine corresponds to the RECORD button so make sure its light is lit.
(quick triple press) RECORD
(hold) the toggle switch in the DOWN position to confirm.

Now we have a blank tape and the /Tape engine is set to defaults, so we should record some audio. Plug some audio into the IN jack. You should be able to monitor it by plugging into the OUT jack.

Recording

press RECORD to arm recording.
press PLAY to begin recording. Let it record for about 20 seconds.
press PLAY again to stop recording.
You can press RECORD now to disarm recording.

You may want to silence the audio going into your IN jack or unplug it.

Rewind

(hold) the toggle switch in the DOWN position to rewind the recording. You’ll hear it playing rapidly backwards as you keep the toggle held. When you reach the beginning of your recording, release the toggle. Actually, you don’t have to go all the way to the beginning. Somewhere in the middle is fine.

Playback and Creating a Loop

press PLAY to hear your recording.
while it’s playing press LOOP to create a loop start point.
press LOOP a second time to create a loop end point. The loop will immediately begin cycling. You can press PLAY to start/stop the loop from cycling. And you can clear your loop points by holding LOOP.

Overwrite/Overdub Magic
Plug your audio back into the IN jack.

while your loop is cycling plug an attenuverter into THAT. You don’t have to mess with any of the This/That routing stuff from the manual. I think it starts in a default mode.

As you turn the attenuverter between -5V, 0V, and +5V new audio is recorded onto your loop transitioning between the different overdub and overwrite settings. Take a look at the RECORD lights for visual feedback. At some positions the recorded audio fades away over time, sounding like old tape. You may periodically like to quiet your live audio so you can hear the recording decay better.

Hi there,
does anyone had problems with kind of freezing of the w/?

I own a 2nd hand w/ since a week. w/ was updated to latest FW.

Currently exclusively using tape engine.

What happens:

recorded something
rewind and replayed for a while with loop points set
stopping it for a while OR playing around with play button OR manipulating pitch via THAT OR …
trying to start loop again: no sound, still loop and play leds are looking fine and doing their job
no broken cable, no loose contact on module or in modular system
after powering off and on again everything works fine

Checked support instructions about freezing.
Could it be the SD card or is anyone percieving this behavior also with a new card?
I even changed the postion in my case because I thought the module might to hot next to other 2hp modules with wide pcbs.

I still have the freeze or maybe better audio drop out problem … does no one else has this problem?

I reinstalled the latest firmware, changed power cables, put the module in a different rack, changed SD cards … still I am getting the audio drop out.

Most of the time kind of reproducible by this:

set loop points
play loop
stop loop and wait for about 10min
press play: no audio anymore, only a brief snippet when loop wraps around

Switching off and on again brings audio back…

sorry to hear that you’re having troubles! i haven’t seen this problem, and i wasn’t able to reproduce following the steps you outlined. you might want to reach out to whimsical raps for support.

I’ve found tape to be very useful for creating layered sounds to accompany pads, helping them to feel like they’re evolving and developing

Here is a stupid question I am hoping someone can answer - does W/syn need to be tuned? If so, how is this done? If not, is there a relatively easy way to ensure it plays in tune with other oscillators?

digital modules don’t need to be tuned, if you plug a midi keyboard in and play a C w/syn will play a C. if you want w/syn in tune with your analog modules, you’ll need to tune the analog to the digital.

As I have received my recently purchased and second W/, and as an avid user of Just Friends FLOOM mode. I was wondering if W/Syn could integrate the new ways of the Curve control that we can find in JF now ? In comparison, there are way less timbral modifications on W/Syn with Curve than what JF is offering with its last firmware versions (v4.5 and v4.6). Especially when using FLOOM or in Synthesis Mode, there is a huge space of timbral variations thanks to the wavefolder and the new steeper square waves combined with FM synthesis. W/Syn can reach bigger number ratios, I’m very curious of what could be achieved if Curve would have the same behavior as JF. Thanks a lot @Galapagoose for your ever-inspiring work, it has really changed the way I look at (and listen to) “digital” synthesis.

I just had this happen to me, I didn’t think I did anything different. It wasn’t being used in a patch at first, then i started trying to record a loop the same way as usual on w/tape and it would only record the last half second at the loop point. I haven’t turned the system on again yet to see if it’s working like normal.

If it helps, it’s set up as the last module in an i2c chain. Crow → JF → w/

edit: turning on my machine this morning and everything worked fine. shrug

unfortunately the problem still exists.
steps to recreate (problem in bold):

setting loop points or using the ones I set in a previous session
playing the loop (this seems to run for ever)
stopping the loop
starting the loop after a while again (e.g. after10min)
most of the looped audio is silent only a tiny bit is played when loop wraps around …

trent thought it might has to do something with the sd card but still the problem is there also with other or new class 10 card.

what I found out is, if the problem occurs and I enter the launcher, choose another engine, go out of launcher and back to launcher and choose again tape engine, everything works fine again for a while. before I found this workaround I needed to switch of my system completely.

I do not use i2c.

I would like to report a bug that @KBCP already posted in Feb’21. The bug shows up in the fact that W/ no longer reacts to the play button in tape mode. All other buttons work fine. The other modes also work without problems. The problem came after I played around a bit with the W/ commands using Cow
It is persistent and cannot be solved by re-installing the latest firmware (v2.0.1).
I then flashed the module back to the very old version W/_1.2.1, which fixed the problem. However, the bug was there again when I flashed the module back to v2.0.1.
Finally I was able to fix the problem by using a new SD card.

while i don’t doubt that trent reads the forum and this thread in particular, i wonder if it might be more useful for them to receive bug reports via a format other than this. after all, lines is supposed to be a pleasant place to hang; certainly i’d be here less if it made me feel like i were doing work.
