Yes, it’s true. We get so used to the graphics subsystems on our general purpose computing platforms that we forget what it’s like when you have to manage every pixel yourself.

I’d be fine with simplistic tape position feedback like “12m 56s”.

The post just dropped off my W//!! A day early, and on a Sunday to boot. Time to dive in!

:champagne::champagne: have fun!

@scanner_darkly has done a bit of graphics programming on Teletype. Maybe he can show you around his code a bit and turn you into a TT firmware hacker. but I guess this is veering off-topic and there’s a W/ Type Firmware Ideas thread.

Some wobbly tape via THAT CV input:

I’ll have one more of these today, but that’s it. It’s back to the grindstone tomorrow, and then some vacation time.

Another great video!

I’d be interested in seeing a video on ‘that’ in live mode. The manual states that, I’m guessing here, from -3 to -5 volts gives the tape a ‘worn’ effect. I’ve tried doing this myself, but wouldn’t call the results ‘worn’. It usually ends up lowering the output(could be this is exactly what it’s meant to do).

…wait for it…(for at least 20 chars)

I interpreted it as referring to the fact that you can hear a ‘ghost’ of the old recording behind the current one. Like we used to get on cassette tapes that had been used to record the Top 40 for several years.

I think every pass removed some of the magnetic particles - or maybe they just became demagnetised and so new recordings were less detailed. Cheap tapes were more prone to it.

As an aside, I well remember this ruining a recording of T’Pau’s China In Your Hand as the ghost of some novelty record from a one-hit wonder bloomed up during the reprieve.

And here it is. I don’t think I’ve found the sweet spot of the THAT settings on overdub. And I’ve yet to get a real feel for positive vs negative voltages (though I have a rough idea from reading the manual a few times). And you’ll note I skipped the use of THIS in NAV mode. Haven’t a clue what that does yet!

You’re probably right as it does exactly what you say.

Thank you :ok_hand:! This clears things up for me and confirms what @rikrak said.

I am in love with this module. Getting lost in funky tape delays and stretchy washy goodness  Pairing with Cold Mac is a dream! Unfortunately, one of my two w/ has a funky/non-functioning switch… It mostly registers ups, but no downs at all. But, I sent a service email and I am sure it will get sorted. This thing is wonderful!!!

Yes definitely having fun with it! — there are some strange things on occasion: i’ve gotten stuck in a couple places where i cant change modes, or after i have a bunch of loop points and am shifting around between them, the starts begin to get a crunchy click, that seems to get worse over time.

The cue mode is very cool - its nice to get some automated clock sync happening, using the tigger and an offset going into the same jack is a very very neat mechanic. although the +/- voltage to move through the cue points seems to work a lot better going forward for me than backward. I have to look into that a bit more.

In play mode, the overdub VS loop fade away is pretty straight forward, and recording in with spurts of overdub, def gives that dakim style fakey compressor ducking, which is cool.

On the puzzling side for me are the lights over each button while in all the different modes, things are happening there that i am sure must be usefull, but remain a mystery.

I haven’t gotten around to trying to move or replace/delete the cue points yet. Another day…

Great sufft @Galapagoose, congrats on another insta-classic module. Looking forward to the next few weeks for any possible updates (and explanations! Haha)

great info, even the last 10 seconds is gold - thx for posting

sorry to be “that asshole,” but this would require an arbitrarily large 1d memory, and TTs implemementation of elementary CA currently works on a single byte (which i’d recommend increasing to some larger number with a sliding 16b window, a la cabash)

highly recommend matthew cook’s original proof of rule 110 universality, for those inclined.

in a nutshell, the narrow sense of computational universality in this case, is that it is formally undecidable whether r110 will arrive at a given sequence of bits, or not (but again assuming an infinite memory.) in the process the author kind of builds up a theoretical computing system based on gliders, which is pretty fun.

Having read Starthief’s great list of instructions, and much of the rest of this thread, I still cannot get my w/ to do anything remotely consistently. Sometimes pressing play actually plays the tape (puts me in live mode). Sometimes pressing play again turns the light off and stops the tape; sometimes it turns on the yellow light on P, though it’s not clear that is doing anything. Sometimes pressing P does nothing whatsoever.

Staying positive! But extremely extremely frustrated. Anyone else having trouble with this thing, you are not alone.

When I push UP, my W/ stops recording and continues playing at the point where I appear to have “punched out” by pressing UP. Is this expected? How do I get back into the loop?

I cannot get W/ to loop on DOWN then UP at all. It continues playing. I am also honestly not sure if I have any cue points set or not…navigating via CUE doesn’t seem to do anything. I am starting to wonder if I am able to set cue points at all.

And also, now, when I start up, it buzzes unpleasantly. Sometimes play works in this state, sometimes it does not. If I press play, it buzzes in a different way, and if I stop play and rewind or fast forward, that shifts upwards into a whine.

Consolidating all my posts into one here to hopefully make less noise  If this sounds like a buggy module to anyone who feels like they have a working module, let me know and I’ll stop banging my head trying to figure it out.
