Odd, I have the Batumi zoom thing happening sometimes, but Sisters always works fine. Clouds/ER-301/monome modules never seem to have issues as well. Seems that most people run into power issues at some point no matter what case they’re using? Probably has to do with non-standardization of digital modules and their hardware + boot up firmware?

edit - not trying to hijack this and make it about Pittsburgh cases, but power issues should be discussed if that explains the weirdness people are experiencing.

Wow, this thread is going to be invaluable to all who are struggling to understand this module in the coming months/years. I ordered direct from WR on Thursday and I haven’t gotten any shipping confirmation yet - has anyone else who ordered direct heard back yet? Maybe they’re updating the modules somehow before shipping? So far it seems tough to tell what is user error and what is a bug.

Also, how is w/ working with Teletype?

I immediately thought my crashing problems stemmed from a power issue. I really hope not. I recently splurged on an Intellijel Triple Power Supply to avoid such problems. I’m only using half of the power this thing is capable of putting out too. Curious if anyone can actually confirm that their issues are power related. I might switch over to my uZues tonight just to see if it changes anything.

Q: what mode are you in when you hit PLAY and the light doesn’t stay on? (must be cue or nav)… but, more importantly, how do you get out of it? so the PLAY button latches?

(this happens to me a lot)

edit: or like now… even if i try to record… i can’t even get play to light up at all…

No shipping confirmation here yet. Ordered on release day. Not worried yet though.

power related problems… when all other modules work fine in the case than i think its appropriate to not call it power related but badly designed modules… theres a lengthy discussion about audio damage modules on muffs having similar problems… hope this all solves with a firmware upgrade…

Sounds like it could be CUE mode. Pressing the Loop button should get you back to NAV mode if that’s the case

Tiptop Mantis user here. My W/ seems to be working fine, but I must admit the module is confusing enough to make me second guess how it actually should function.

I ordered mine Thursday last week and haven’t got any shipping confirmation yet either.
Im not to worried just hope they do a good job putting it together. For me almost all of the Mannequins and monome stuff i buy in an experimental mind compared to most other stuff which i like to be simple and straight forward. /J

I thought part of the appeal of Mannequins modules was that they had depth, nuance, and weirdness that revealed itself over time? Sure some of the power issues are of concern but I don’t get the other critiques.

thanks… no luck tho… i can’t engage loop or play mode, nothing seems to be working (after multiple reboots)… and this is after a great night with it last night where wonderful stuff was coming out of it.

today, no combination of loop/play/record is letting me record or play back anything. frustrating.

the module is starting to remind me of the mungo g0… a love/hate relationship where it had a mind of its own. some days it worked great, others it just didn’t.

edit: after writing and editing this post i went back to find the module was playing (and had recorded) by itself and seems to be working now. i pressed nothing! maybe it had to warm up

This, all of this. Now that I have it working more or less correctly (it crashes less once you’re doing things it expects), my biggest complaint is “this didn’t need to be 2hp”. I’d rather not be spending my limited studio time fighting to develop muscle memory and letting the lights guide me when just a couple of nice chunky switches and knobs would do the trick more intuitively.

This is definitely true and I do love them for this but I also think that if you are going to build modules within this philosophy you have to make sure it works perfectly before releasing it. Otherwise you find yourself in the situation we are in now. Half the people here can’t tell if the module is broken, there’s a power issue, there are firmware bugs or it’s all just user error. That just seems so wrong to me.

That is a great example of whats possible with this, got me very excited to receive mine now. Well done!

The other approach - - I’ve only had mine for a couple of hours, so this might be nonsense - might be having the discipline to learn a minimal feature set and work within that. Perhaps it will be possible to - for example - set it into long gradually decaying tape loop overdub mode - where it sits there doing that on power up.
So in normal use, we’re not button mashing to try to understand all the features?

Interesting to watch this from the outside, as it were (I don’t have a w/). It almost seems like this module’s apparent unreliability is being passed off as the nuance Mannequins modules are known for? And sure, I’m all for poetic approaches to equipment, but the manual seems so confusing I can’t help but feel like I’m being trolled when I read it.

Also, has it been stated why w/ is 2hp? From here it looks like issues with functionality (or understanding thereof) is to do with the size.

While I might agree with you on this regarding analog modules I can’t see where you are coming from when it comes to digital modules. I’ve been working with the ER-301 for 15 months and probably 40 firmware iterations. The Ornament & Crime has gone through a dozen versions. Most of MI’s stuff get’s updates or alternative firmware. The Teletype has benefited greatly from the community identifying and often fixing issues themselves. Pamela’s New Workout has seen its fair share of updates too. Point is that unless you are Rossum Electro and have the resources to test extensively, these small bespoke manufacturers who are delving into greater complexity through digital instruments are going to have to rely upon the early adopters to help them finesse their product.

There is no “situation” other than the one created here by people complaining instead of being part of the solution and finding some patience for a module that is about 85 hours old.

I’m going to stick with this, because I do think W/ + Radio Music + TuringMachine will be a lot of fun in a little lunchbox…

Very good points here. Apologies for letting the frustrations lead to negative comments!

@philmaguire I don’t have mine yet, but I do have Just Friends, Cold Mac, Mangrove, Three Sisters while Just Type is talking to my Teletype and it in turn is talking to my ER-301. None of it is easy but I don’t go into these forums with the need to besmirch something I don’t even own and then being dismissive for the sake of being the troll you lament the manual as being. Why are some posters here intent on turning this into one of those other forums where people simply show up to bitch?
