Such is the price for early adoption. I am of the mind that I know going into pulling the trigger to purchase from a small manufacturer – especially one as active and responsive as the ones on this forum – on the first day that there will likely be an evolution of the module to its ultimate final state if it is ever achieved. That journey is part of the fun and charm of the modular world. I suppose the caveat there is the process of the evolving state of a particular module is fun if one’s livelihood doesn’t depend on it.

I could hug you for your understanding and compassion and only wish others demonstrated a similar level of maturity. Sorry, but a like on your post wasn’t enough. I love being part of the process.

Try this…
Record a nice gritty drone loop (I used Kastle), put in NAV mode, patch channel 3 of maths into THAT, now you have manual control of play direction and speed/pitch…

Too much fun!

Not my intent at all, and apologies if that’s how it came across. I’m sharing my impression of w/ from reading various discussions, listening to audio etc. My point about the manual is that my personal feeling is that I don’t understand why a manual for something isn’t written in as clear, plain-language way as possible. The fact that it (and general description of the module) isn’t is part of what puts me off. And if it’s to the extent where users aren’t even sure if their module is functioning correctly, then should there not be a discussion about that, and the intention(s) of its design? I’m trying to understand why it is the way that it is. I’m not interested in bitching for the sake of it.

That being said, I wasn’t put off buying a Cold Mac, for some reason. But then I wanted my utilities to have an entangled, somewhat unknowable nature to them.

It seems like most are expecting this to be a little different/challenging. so if they’re stuck it shouldn’t be written off too soon. Some people might actually be having power issues (@clams seems to have run into something odd). Hopefully people keep this all cordial and we get to the bottom of it, whether it’s usage or hardware.

Agreed, I also thought it was good to relay experiences here for the creators of the module who are most likely reading all of this. While it might have come off as bitching I was thinking that all of the user feedback would be invaluable to the firmware updates.

@Jonny, agreed.

We’re all working toward understanding the issues at hand and as we share our feelings and findings, there are bound to be some rough edges. I think an assumption of positive intent, both while reading and as we post, is helpful.

Mannequins User Manuals. These things nearly create more conversations than the modules themselves. I personally am in love with them.

Mind you, I’m a high school dropout with ZERO university training. With that said, I have been a life long study of art, philosophy, science, history, and communication and language theory. None of what I’ve endeavored to explore has been easy nor do I believe it was easy for the artists, scientists, writers, thinkers, and inventors to accomplish what they tried to do. So when Galapagoose releases an invention that would have been impossible to create a dozen years ago and he wraps it in the prose of taking poetic license to put an extra gleam on the presentation of his creation, I tend to want to celebrate with him.

Complexity and difficulty separates many among the masses where some prefer the simple and unchallenging while others explore the boundaries. I’d like to believe that those who are on these types of forums are here because they are up for a good fight with their brains to overcome complacency.

Sorry for kind of going off the rail on this thread that should only be about W/.

One hour in and I’ve kind of got the hang of creating loops. This thing is crazy(in a very good way), but I get lost often. Wish there was some kind of indicator to tell me how long my tape is and how much I can still record.

Hi everyone. My w/ is on its way, very excited. One thing concerning the form factor: I just love the 2hp - because it looks just like a tape. A nice little strip of tape in the middle of the rack. I think ist could not be any larger, because the ā€žtape-ishnessā€œ would be lost.

Which is what I was going for. I can see how my first post might not be read that way, though. I’m interested in the design of w/. Right now, I don’t understand why certain choices have been made, but that’s part of why I’m interested. Unfortunately the reception of my comments don’t make me feel especially welcome in the discussion.

I don’t think that simple = unchallenging, or that simple things (modules, music, paintings, whatever) don’t explore boundaries. If anything w/ shows the overlap of simplicity and complexity, which is what interests me about it.

i want to commend you for not taking the previous post as a personal attack (i might have in your shoes)

thanks

we all have strong opinions on this but try to be careful…passionate, quickly-typed messages could do unintended damage to each other

I can dig that. It’s kind of like the universe; made of elementary particles but on the whole it is deep and vast!

Got the ā€œi2cā€ bug @Kel?

The potential pitfalls of text-based communication, I guess

Thanks. It’s hard to convey skepticism without appearing dismissive.

Is there a conceptual reason why w/ is 2hp? First thoughts would be the long tape time, lingering audio, always lurking at the edge of your case… Maybe there was something in the pr material I missed.

Ok, this is great:

I don’t have mine yet but bookmarking this for when I do.

Incidentally, maybe we could break this thread off into another where tips and tricks can be separated out from troubleshooting?

Cheers!

i’ll make a personal distinction

i dont want to stifle commentary on the documentation of w/ but the questions about hardware and ux/ui make more sense to me

i’m dying to ask trent about some of the design choices and methods he settled on…which were there from the start? what was removed? what hurdles in code and conception had to be cleared for w/ to arrive in its current form?

i guess the reason these type of queries (about the hardware itself and the functionality) make sense is because the main question regarding WR flowery docs has been raised repeatedly and answered just as often in the past.

people still have a right to ask (and seem not to like the answer), which is their right…however i think it’s not a very productive discussion unless folks missed the response when this debate came up previously (upon release of Mangrove, 3sis, JF, RIP, and Coldmac)

Yeah, true enough. I am genuinely interested in the ā€˜why’ of mannequins modules, but at the same time part of my inner monologue thinks ā€˜ok but what does this dial do?’ - I think maybe I lack patience, sometimes.

I am very intrigued by sending 4v to the input to get a worn tape sound. Is there variation in the amount the tape is ā€˜worn’? Or is it a kind of on/off deal?

powerful point qft

my thought is that price and modularity were priorities and determined the size

i think WR saw power in a system employing multiple low-hp w/ modules controlled and modulated by cv rather than a more traditional looper with dedicated knobs and buttons spread over 10-16hp
