Cue mode seems to cause to most confusion for me. I simply cannot get it to work as described (might be a user error). Would like some more documentation on it. The saving and deleting cues has caused me to scratch my head a few times.

I’m out in a limb here, but I’d bet the reasoning for the SD card is it’s the cheapest per-gb way of getting rewritable flash onto the board, and the code is pretty commonplace these days. Also, given the module comes with pre-loaded tape, loading a bunch of pre-flashed cards is way easier than pre-flashing memory chips at a factory. The fact it’s a removable storage medium is almost by-the-by for the end user, it’s a manufacturing choice. The sandwiches design of the boards is another clear indicator it’s not designed for removal. As for the data format: who knows.

To overwrite with a blank signal would you just rewind to the beginning via nav mode, switch to live mode and do the record + down combo with nothing patched in? I know it’s user error but I’ve been struggling to get that overwrite functionality working correctly.

Goo Goo Ga Joob (repeat as necessary).

I’m starting to agree with this. Right now I’m kind of treating it as a happy accident collage machine. I’m finding it’s better not to over think it or expect to use it with perfect precision.

That all makes a lot of sense.

I’ve not received mine yet, so that’s interesting to me. Is it physically possible to remove it? If so, has anyone tried to mount it on a laptop and inspect?

I don’t think you should mess with that:

Thankyou! You just reminded me that the very first thing I did was to mount the sd card and make a backup on my PC!! I totally forgot. Now I am going to try and ā€œFactory Resetā€ my W/.

It would be helpful to know why you think that? Due to how the hardware is constructed?

It’s just a 4GB data file called tape.bin. Obviously not meant to be taken out and read but totally possible and less fiddly than a Disting Mk4 - despite being on the back.

Caveat hacker! I’m only asking questions. I’m in no position to suggest this is a good/bad/other idea!

We’ll know soon enough…

EDIT: I can not recommend trying this, so far…:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

On the whole I found my second night of w/ to be vastly more productive and I found cue mode was starting to make more sense, still haven’t tried anything exactly crazy with it, but I felt like it was working w/ me this time as opposed to against me the night before. More play on the horizon tonight!

A small bit of misinformation which I realized confused me. In cue mode, per the manual, L both deleted a cue point and exited the cue mode. On the ref card R is the proper button to delete a cue point, and this made more sense w/ my experience.

@Galapagoose basically hinted at it saying that the audio can’t be accessed with a computer. If it was my unit I wouldn’t mess with it… Perhaps he can address that some point - whether or not you should be removing the sd card or not.

Had my W/ for a couple days and am learning and loving it so far. The manual is becoming clearer with use and I’ve exercised most of its basic/advertised functions. It sounds amazing. That said…

Here are some problems/glitches I’ve encountered, if they are user error an explanation would be appreciated. Waiting patiently for the tape clear/all cue clear command.

-After jumping between cues I get to one where I Cant navigate away from the loop/cue I’m on. Loop off + RW/FF only speeds up the sound but never goes past it. No new sounds from L+up or L+down. A reboot fixes this.

-Some of my material overwrote a part of the izzy tutorial, after youre instructed to plug a sound source into in. Pressing the next correct button moves the tutorial forward, but one of the steps (inserting first cue) is skipped. A reboot starts izzy again even if I dont hold the buttons on power up. I made it past the tutorial eventually but I wont be going back :frowning:

-No documentation in the manual regarding fine editing and save/delete of cue markers in CUE mode, just the button functions listed on the reference card. Only briefly demonstrated in the izzy tutorial.

Nice find. I was a bit confused about how to delete cue’s in CUE. Still not sure when R deletes or saves a cue.

OK. So I don’t recommend trying to access the file on a Windows 10 PC.

Whilst it was possible to copy the tape.bin file to the PC, I wasn’t able to copy it back - presumably because it uses a different filesystem. I see there are hidden .trashes files and the other detritus that Apple uses for god-knows-what - on the disk.

I wasn’t able to over-write or delete the existing tape.bin file, so no change was made to the card.

I have remounted it and checked it and every tape works as before and all my recordings are there - so far as I can tell. I have no reason to believe it made any difference because I didn’t write to the card.

One thing I noticed though, when testing it - it’s quite easy to insert a cable into IN or OUT and have it feel like it is fully inserted when it is not. Also, difficult to tell when viewing the module face-on.

When the cable coming from OUT wasn’t pushed in 100%, I got the nasty digital noise from the other day. This makes me think that it was caused by a partially inserted cable in IN when I was recording.

Just a thought.

I’ve made some fantastic Tape Delays with W/ - I will try and capture one on my rubbish smartphone…

This is where I haven’t tested this too extensively, but I found that if you used the L+arrows so you knew you were actually on a cue it deleted it pretty consistently. Haven’t tried so much to do the thing where you are nearby and use R to save a new location. Honestly was trying to go to sleep last night and instead was rereading the manual when i noticed that discrepancy which had made the whole thing a little more confusing in my head than it needed to be, so I plan to give that all a go this evening.

Right, but that single comment doesn’t specify whether it can’t be done (which I doubt is the case) or simply isn’t supported (which is entirely reasonable, and more likely). Assuming the data is stored on the card, then it strikes me as something to explore, since it would be handy to have multiple tapes backed up, or alternatively to construct a tape with cue points in advance of a performance using the finer control available on a laptop.

Same here. Once you get your head around the basics it opens up a whole new level. Love it.

Please share your findings(if you don’t mind  )
