thanks for the update, and for all the hard work you’ve put in this week. haven’t gotten mine yet, but happy to have ordered from and supported you directly!

How to address individual W/s?

(So excited)

edit: On second read, this is already very deep.

Given that we can also connect Teletype’s CV outs to W/'s THIS, THAT and IN

I believe it is now theoretically possible, using a Teletype, 2 x W/s and a bunch of patch cables, to have the first W/ reprogram the second W/s firmware via Rule 110, such that the second W/ becomes self-aware.

@galapagoose, please tell us the key combo for Delete All Tape before it is too late!

That seems like a great start for commands, and a good approach to implementation. I had a few immediate suggestions and then realized they weren’t strictly necessary, when combining a tiny amount of manual prep work with these commands plus CV control. :ok_hand:

So glad it helped! It’s fun to start figuring this module out, so much potential. I’ve had weird issues too where I need to reboot if I overdub too much, think it might be overdrawing and locking up or something.

Mine just seems straight up broken at this point. The bugs and crashes I’m experiencing are so erratic and frequent I can’t even keep track of them. I can’t even accomplish a simple loop. I just started rewinding and eventually found this sound that I definitely did not record:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/u40s9526kwguyfz/With%20Noise.wav?dl=0

I keep rewinding and it never seems to end. I also can’t record over it. Anyone else encounter this?

Here is an incomplete list of other problems I’ve been having:

  • Hitting record, the record light goes on, yet nothing gets recorded.
  • Hitting play and the light doesn’t go on and nothing plays. Cant enter Live mode. I can hear a clicking sound every time I hit the play button.
  • Getting stuck in a loop and unable to record over it, fast forward past it, or skip to the next cue.
  • In Nav mode I hold down or up and nothing happens. Left yellow light above loop goes on
  • Crashing every time I try to switch a tape.
  • Crashing a lot in Global mode.
  • Hitting down while in Nav mode caused a crash.
  • Cant exit Live mode by hitting play. Light stays on.
  • Hit play and it just stops at a cue point. Loop lights going crazy.
  • When loop is off I hit play and it just stops at what i think is a cue point. Then I can’t engage play again.

I ended up emailing @Galapagoose about all of this. I really just want to know if I have as broken module on my hands.

As someone who missed the first wave, @Galapagoose or @izzy do you have a sense when you’ll have stock again?

Mine definitely does some of these things. Especially crashing when changing tapes and getting stuck in a loop/cue point…

Yes, that dreaded noise! Ended up with a bunch of that myself. Really would like to get rid of it.

quick ticky-tack q: does w/ come w(ith) an i2c cable?

I know they’re planning a very-soon fix-em-up firmware update. The more of these bugs you can reproduce and report officially, the more stable the next release will be! (I am assuming your module is fine and these are bugs due to how many people are experiencing similar problems; and that you’re having more trouble cuz you’re spending more time W/ [and maybe just having bad luck, sorry].)

thanks for the quick confirmation.

I cant say you don’t have a broken machine but several of those behaviours can be explained.

  • I have had the digital noise occur when I had a l cable that wasn’t fully inserted. May be other causes.
  • Make sure you stop the tape before changing tapes in Global to avoid a crash.

Most of the others sound like they could be either software faults or the result of the module being in a different mode to the mode it appears to be in. (Again probably a software fault).

I’ve had my fair share of frustrations and I am avoiding using it too much until the firmware is patched - but I would give it a little time because once it is working it is going to be incredible.

One thing I would say is that it might have been better to address the bugs with a new firmware before releasing the Teletype integration.

Even if it was ready to go - it can only add to the confusion at this point.

Yeah, I’m not even going to try hooking it up with the teletype until it’s a little more stable.

Funny: my (perhaps naive) inclination is that less dependence on button presses and cables will alleviate confusion.

I’ll let you know how it goes!

I know that’s tongue in cheek, but it should be possible to make up a Turing machine with Teletype and W/. W/'s in’s and out’s are AC coupled, but they can record and playback audio clicks, and TT can be told to treat those as 1’s and 0’s (maybe 0 for one click and 1 for two rapid clicks).
Not sure it would have any musical use, but it would be interesting to try a Turing machine with an eight hour long tape.

Exactly! I was being partly serious. Rule 110 is Turing Complete and I think the TT can run it via the CA chaos algorithm.

After reading about the new W/ Type commands, I imagined the TT being used to lay down a set of instructions on the W/ tape, that could be re-read via its Input. Like we did in the olden days of the 1980s!

With two W/s, it could be possible to bounce instructions back and forth - reading from one and writing to the other - growing the sequence of instructions like Langtons Loops!

AT the very least, it is possible to store data for the Teletype to read (but which is not meant to be ‘heard’ by the audience). Even if it is just more Pattern Data.

Lots to think about!

I found this loop too! No idea what it is or why it’s there, I think I was able to record over it though once I started to figure out the module.
