haven’t seen it mentioned here yet, and since you brought up euro – more of a routing controller than a mixer i guess since you’d have to have attenuators on levels elsewhere, but it seems fun

yay! thanks a lot!
Super glad to hear you’re happy with my mixer, it’s always a delight to see my children in the wild!

Wow, I’d love to buy one of these. Looks so handy!

Well, I still have some PCBs around - I can sell you a PCB, put together a kit or could make one for you?

@namke Interesting, I’m in the market for a matrix mixer, mainly to be able to mix in FX in my Eurorack, for example for different drum voices, before sending to my main mixer. Would your PCB fit behind a Eurorack panel? And where would the limitations of passive come in, vs. an active mixer?

Passive matrix mixers have all sorts of quirks

  • Because there is no buffering, inputs and outputs can affect each other in sometimes unpredictable ways;
  • Signals are quieter (as might be expected because there’s only attenuation on offer here)
  • but no power is required…

My PCB is just about 100mm square, so whether it fits in Eurorack would depend on the gap between the rails (I have a sneaking suspicion that it won’t fit, however it might be possible to wiggle it in).

I’d be interested to see a panel design for it - I tried to make all the holes regularly spaced!

OK. It should fit - max recommended PCB height is 106.5mm, and panel height is 128.5mm
The quirks sound interesting! I guess I’m really looking for the predictability of an active mixer in this case though.

I <3 matrix mixers. I use two of them in my system - the Midas one as an effects routing brain for submixes and the Hinton one as an all purpose bussing system and interface between modular and studio gear. Once you get into the matrix frame of mind, traditional mixers with only a couple of aux sends feel very limiting. Matrix mixing just feels more synchronous with the modular mentality of infinite possibilities.

Ahhhhhh. I’ve long thought about integrating an XL88 into my setup… I occasionally search for used ones at a manageable price but no such luck.

This is amazing work! Beautiful!

traded my one traditional sequencer for the a-138m and… wow. just had one of those moments. somehow i find the matrix mixer way more musical to play with than I ever found the sequencer. i was using one channel to send my mix to W/ (working as a delay) and then another to send an offset voltage to w/ to control the overwrite amount. Being able to control the level of the feedback and the amount of overwrite… i thought it might be a bit too much hp to be worth it, but now i feel like it’s not big enough - if i could fit an NLC cluster in my case i would

thank you to this thread for the inspo <3

Don’t fret too much about losing that traditional sequencer. If you have a clock divider and a sequential switch it’s easy to patch the a-138m as a 16step sequencer.

My first matrix mixer!

I’m mainly planning on using it to route the voices in my system in fun ways, but also dabblings in feedback and wacky FM patches.

My first patch was multing Just Friend’s cycling outputs to control the vca’s of 4 voices routed to different places, which was fun and confusing.

any schematics or pcb layouts? would love to purchase a pcb if you could sell me one!

I used the schematic from here:

Pcb layout is pretty straightforward because it’s a regular repeating pattern

I have a few PCBs left, so yes I can definitely send you one… or a kit?

I have the kits listed on the WonkyStuff Bandcamp page – I can negotiate on price I expect

Are the jacks 3.5mm? If so is it possible to install 6.35mm jacks onto the PCB? I’d be interested in building one of these

Jacks are 3.5mm, yes — I am pretty sure that 1/4” jacks couldn’t be made to fit (unless using flying leads and mounting it behind a panel) because the socket’s footprint would be too large

I posted a link a few posts back to the source of the schematic (from Mickey Delp) – he used 1/4” jacks iirc

happy belated birthday to Abe, and it looks like his next module will be a matrix mixer with 4 in, 3 out plus a combined out in 10ish hp (sorry for the reddit link, but easier to watch the video there than the one on instagram because you can scrub through) ~

I made this little guy for euro systems. It should be out at the end of this month or early next. It’s a simple active design.
