any acousmatic performer/performance as @Rodrigo said.
i like helena gough’s work a lot. and i’ve seen her perform with faders… acousmatic traditions.
no videos but there’s sound here : http://bandcamp.com/search?q=helena+gough&from=corphome and there : [http://www.helenagough.net/discog.html](http://www.helenagough.net/discog.html)

i would add this micromodular/faderfox performance by Rastko Lazic

https://vimeo.com/65191738

and there are no input mixing board performances. but i can’t find videos that show faders movements. toshimaru nakamura is well known for playing nimb. and i like his work too.

there is also dj sniff.
obviously he couldn’t do it with rotaries :

Funny, I immediately went looking for acousmatic videos too and came up with nothing.

I recently had a chance to play at a concert like this and after seeing the trained acousmatic composers rehearse their diffusions I have a whole new appreciation for their level of fader virtuosity.

So many great and thought provoking ideas here! The main reflection I get from this discussion is the huge breadth of possibility possible in the simple act of changing volume. It helps me appreciate the idea that the simplest ‘distortion’ of a signal is a change in volume, and thus should be highly respected.

What’s clear to me is that the artists shown (and not shown) almost certainly have different needs in a mixer. For me though, I also see that almost all of these performances could be accomplished in a multitude of manners. Each performer gravitates toward a particular tool, or set of tools, to accomplish their desired outcome in a process that feels natural to them. Or in many cases, the tools they had at their disposal at the time of creative impetus.

I wonder what an acousmatic performer’s tool of choice would look like were there not ready availability of large scale mixing consoles. What would a battle DJ mixer look like? What kind of routing would exist on a dedicated no-input mixer?

i’m old school and mabye battle djs are looking for something completely different these days but imo the vestax 6 is truly perfect for battling because so much has been stripped away (leaving room for the dj to prove/showcase their ability)

a dedicated no-input mixer would probably vary person to person but for the way i use the technique it would look something like these:

really for mine i’d only need either one dial for output volume OR one per i/o node…along with minimal rotary control i would choose bananas as the format for a variety of reasons

mixing with an array of banana jacks would be perfect for this style

actually i’d also consider something like teletype to be NUTS for no in

a bunch of jacks, a screen, a keyboard  (has somebody hacked the firmware to handle audio yet? )

great stuff!

what is that mixer Rastko is using?

It’s not a mixer but a faderfox uc3 midi controller.
See here http://www.faderfox.de/uc3.html

another creator seemingly partial to faders

ducks

edit:

just wanted to add…
__ lots of great ideas / discussion here, especially Rastko Lazic’s ( who also shared the mappings for the micromodular / faderfox setup. ) which at the time totally tipped the balance in favour of getting one, though soon discovered they’re few and far from easy to find.
minimal mixer wise thought I’d mention
this little critter I picked up a couple for mixing contact mice yet find they also work quite well free floating in a tangle of patch cables…

no offence meant with the leunig reference… even with darker material leunig always brightens the day…

Tapage (not on this forum, but you can find him online) has been making a whole set of no-input mixers at STEIM, from what I remember he was building things like ringmods directly into the channel strips : )

A good friend of mine (Richard Knight) does tons of no-input mixer, and on top of the faders he VERY ACTIVELY uses the sends/mute buttons, along with the gain/EQ.

This is from quite a while ago, but he did a no-input workshop for an organization I co-run and put together a leaflet for it:

timely reminder

he was mentioned in a cdm article a few days ago and i stumbled on this 15.piksel.no/three-mixers/ while researching

such an amazing idea

still need to check more of his work

thanks for that pdf!
i need to try mutes

gain/eq are essential while using a board as well…not sure how i forgot until you mentioned it

pan dials also create unexpected results so i recommend playing with that too

Vaguely related b/c consoles, faders, mutes.

Thanks, @glia – this is great, and well worth the time. I liked the second half even better than the first.

Interesting! i happen to be in the process (for almost two years now) of designing a compact mixer for those looking to integrate Hardware, Software, Modulars FXs… i’m doing that with Kahayan, an amazing technician and electronic engineer here in Madrid, bad side is we are both really busy and it makes it very difficult to concentrate on it. We are certainly looking into Acousta P100 and Studer 169 designs, looking into make it affordable but of really high quality and more compact than those designs.

BTW, in my opinion, the most interesting option right now, but not a cheap one, is the Speck electronics Lilo

Make a mixer !!!

Now that i own a mixer myself (mackie) i finally understand this discussion better. I like the functionality but i don’t like to use it… I don’t feel inspired and creative when using it, which i do feel when i use my grid. But maybe i’m spoiled by the level of the design and build quality of monome
