Yes - The CueMix software takes a second to get use to (at least for the mk3 I have), but you essentially have a different “mixer” for each pair of outputs.

EDIT: The mk4 uses much upgraded software than the mk3. Not called CueMix anymore but looks cleaner, more robust, and easier to use.

Awesome - thanks @bradfromraleigh. I’m really eager to have everything connected to facilitate recording.

I have the 828es which I think runs the same software. There’s a review of the browser based software on Sound in Sound, and I think it’s been updated since then to have a touch screen iPad version too.

You can basically reroute any input to any output, and take these through a virtual mixing console as well. There’s a Matrix where you can set all of this up - it can leave you scratching your head a little bit because you’ve got physical inputs and outputs and then the virtual ins and outs of the mixer, but you can get most things to work. So taking all those ins to Norns should be fairly simple.

One tip I’ve learnt this week when doing this (if you use Ableton). Is you can disable the “exclusive” record arming/soloing of tracks in the Ableton settings. This makes it much easier to multitrack record (otherwise you have to hold cmd/ctrl to arm more than one track).

@Olivier if your using Ableton its very easy to set up sends and use the external audio plugin. I would recommend it over using the motu software so you can have multiple roughings per project. I recommend setting up the driver error compensation in the ableton help.

A question for other people using a Motu Ultralite or similar:

The reason I got a Motu Ultralite mk4 is that it could be my soundcard but also function as a basic mixer without being plugged in to a computer. I haven’t had a lot of luck with being able to store and recall presets. Even though there seems like there’s multiple systems for doing so. So, I’ve just kind of created a compromise setting that works for both cases. That’s fine but I’d rather be able to load a “Recording” and a “no-computer” setting easily.

  1. On the front panel there’s a preset recall menu but I haven’t been able to save any presets into that menu. The existing pre-sets are close but not quite what I want, Is it possible to make new presets or customize these ones? have others done so? That would be so helpful.

  2. Even in the MOTU mixing/routing software, I find that the preset manager seems to save only part of the settings (e.g. not the routing AND the mixer settings).

Have other people had good luck with saving and loading multiple states from either the software or (even better) the hardware menus?

i think you are looking for “device presets” which save routing, mixing, the entire interface state. (cf https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=31&v=sp6ASEmqGAk)
But i concur that it took me a while to make sense of the many places in the web interface where one can save a (confusingly scope-limited) preset.

Oh wow, thanks so much for taking the time to point me to that. That looks to be exactly what I am trying to do. I’m glad I asked. Somehow I could not find this in the manual or by messing around.

I picked up a used Motu Track 16 & Breakout Box from Reverb last week for $215. It’s my first Motu interface and is replacing my Focusrite Scarlet 18i20.

The Focusrite gave me more IO than I really have use for, and the Motu give me almost as much, and does so in a smaller package. It sounds great and is a joy to use overall. I’m very happy with the purchase so far.

I have the ES3, ES5 & ES6 from Expert Sleepers connected to the Motu via ADAT. I’ve been an Ableton user since 2003, but right now I’m demoing Reaper and am really enjoying the recording workflow using Touch OSC on my iPad with the Logic Touch template for controlling Reaper’s mixer, and general control, in general.

Thanks for sharing - I hadn’t seen / considered the track 16 before. The size is nice, the (used) price is nice; I’ll have to give it a deeper look. I have been debating mixer/interface/hybrid for so long, maybe this will be just the thing I’ve been looking for.

Expert Sleepers just recently announced the ES-9, and as an ES-8 owner, it’s got me sweating a bit. I’m really hoping that the DC filtering option in the ES-9 is possible on the ES-8 through firmware (I’m sure I can do without it, or I have so far, anyway), but that MIDI header and mixer configuration makes it somewhat of a tantalizing prospect. I’m left wondering what might be possible with a 16n Fader Bank down the line with some firmware updates (perhaps for use as a performance mixer?).

I’ve also been looking at the Elektron Analog Heat as a stereo interface, mainly as a final stop in the mastering chain, but also generally as an interface for line-level (or lower than line-level, as is sometimes the case in my work) stereo devices.

Those of you with MOTU audio interfaces (and especially elektron things): How do you find the input level?

When running out of Analog Rytm, or Mannequins RIP into my 16A, I find the levels in my DAW sitting around -24db most of the time. If I push them hard, say with the compressor on the Rytm, I can push it to -12db, but in general most instruments I use come in lower than that. I’m not gaining or trimming the inputs on the ADC, they’re all set to 0.

I can confirm that without gaining or trimming the inputs on the ADC the levels are rather on the lowish side. This is the case for the Elektron Rytm, Digitakt and most synths.

I use preamps even for line signals to get up to -16dB to -12dB for recording.

Nice! that sounds like a good amount of headroom. I think my line-level instruments are similar, but my modular usually requires trimming, since I’m coming right out of the machine without an I/O module.

The best bang for buck atm is a metric halo unl2 with 3d card…if you can find a second hand one and add the 3d card separately, even cheaper…

They wrote their own USB drivers and all the computer intensive stuff is done on chip
They 4 quote samples of latency…fgpa, macros for the most incredible routining ever - can’t recommend em enough…you can run it off a car battery too

Plus you’ll never need to buy another one again as I have a 2882 ive upgraded twice now in 12 years

Is it possible to midi map MOTUs Mixer Software?

Natively, no. They support OSC and HTTP remote control, so you can control them through the Touch Console on a phone, computer, or tablet, or with any software or device that supports OSC. I imagine you could use MIDI (like an external hardware MIDI controller) if you used something to convert MIDI messages to OSC like the following:

oscii-bot
ShowCockpit
midioscar
osculator

Totally fine levels there. At 24 bits you’re well above the noise floor by an order of magnitude.

I’m on tour for the foreseeable future and I just bought a Macumbista Benjolin to keep myself amused between shows. I should have in in ten days or so. But how to listen to it?
I need something small that’s a mixer with 1/4" inputs (I guess 3.5mm would work and I could get some 1/4" to 3.5mm cables) with a headphone output. If it was a soundcard too with USB that would be even better then I could record ideas.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Would a zoom h4n or roland r-07 do it? What else do you need to mix with it? (Shame you’re not coming anywhere near me! I checked!)
