A MixPre 3 or 6 is perfect for this type of application.

I have a Mackie Onyx 2-2 bus-powered USB audio interface for this sort of thing. It’s not quite as small as the above options, but it’s cheap ($160ish.) The Onyx 1-2 is even smaller and cheaper ($129.)

Thanks. Where are you? I’ll be almost everywhere over the next year or so…

I’m in the DC area. Maybe you’re playing at Rhizome?

Just played my acoustic/song show at the new(ish) City Winery. So probably not back until 2021 unless my electronic career/hooby somehow leapfrogs the day job…

Wow. Never looked at these before. $$$, but looks like a decent investment. Live recording without laptop… I like that. Thanks!

I bought a MixPre 6 a few years ago, and it’s been one of the best audio gear investments I’ve ever made. They just released slightly updated versions, so if your budget is tight, would look for a used original MixPre in top condition—have seen some big bargains.

Forest of Dean - so Bristol or Gloucester are the nearest big cities! (Been a fan since Rattlesnakes!)

If mono is enough, check out Bastl Dude. It’s a mixer, but they also advertise it as an instrument:

Because each channel has enough gain, it can be turned into a tone generator by feeding the output back to an input thru a passive eq and other simple circuits.

i have a mixpre10II and it’s really just perfect for recording, mixing and monitoring without studio.
the new II series all have the option to run the musician plugin which makes overdubbing possible, adds metronom and effects. the 32bit recording option however is not possible with the musician plugin. but in regular mode this can be helpful (although taking up massive space)…especially with unpredictable modular sounds the 32 bit options eliminates clipping problems

Have you thought of Norns? Not quite a mixer or a soundcard but is mobile, has a headphones out, can record, plus all the amazing looping and sampling apps. And reverb and compression. You can mix two mono inputs on many apps and mix the inputs, softcut based scripts and sound engines in the mixer section. It might be overkill but its certainly a great option.
I’m hoping to come and see you In Brisbane, Australia

Great idea! I have one. Sadly not with me (almost brought it).

Dude looks fun! How is it with headphones? The literature says it can power them ok but says nothing about connecting…

For what it’s worth, you could pick up a second-hand USB audio interface for around $50 (probably). There’s also the Zoom H1n, which would all you to monitor the benjolin as well as record stuff. It can also function as a basic 2in/2out USB interface.

After some googling, I found this kit headphone amp kit.

I’m planning on building it up for use with my incoming benjolin. Ideally, I’m hoping there’s enough room inside the Benjolin box for me to mount it inside. Otherwise, I can always mount it in a standalone box and use it with any other headphone amplification needs.

I have a Scarlett 18i6 which has served me well but I need something with more outputs in order to integrate my skiff (which currently only contains a PNW, Morphagene, QPAS) and pedals. The idea is to have everything running all the time and being able to route everything everywhere in order to continuously sample/resample. What I have in mind would be something more or less like this:

Within my budget, I have found that Ultralite mk3 hybrid and 828 Mk3 (Firewire only) cost about the same with the 828 being the more flexible of the two. The only thing that worries is how much of an issue a firewire only interface would be when I decide to upgrade my macbook pro to one that doesn’t have a firewire port. Are the thunderbolt adapters dependable? Or should I save a bit more until I could afford the Hybrid?

I’m using a thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter with my Ultralite mk3 hybrid and it seems to be very stable so far.

So you prefer using the thunderbolt port over the USB one? Is it because it has more bandwidth?

I had an Ultralite mk1 for years which was FireWire only… I got used to it… plus I had heard something about interrupt issues with usb, but those may have been solved long ago…

Creature of habit I guess!

I used a thunderbolt 2 to firewire 800 adapter for a while and it worked fine. But the only way to go from thunderbolt 3 to firewire I found is through a really expensive docking station, and so I ended up picking up a used 828x in preparation for my future computer upgrade.

Good point. Mine is thunderbolt 2.

I have a nice thunderbolt 2 hub from macsales that I got a good deal on… no idea about thunderbolt 3!
