thank you! i did not even consider that i’d need to set up a midi device for sync.

so just to be clear - mlr always wants the sync device to be in slot one?

Yes it works ok in that way…What I did is that I loaded the same clip on 2 tracks. What happens is that when record to one track it records to the other as well…!?

(i should put, again, the caveat that i’m not the MLR author. i don’t even use it really!)

my understanding is, that’s intended functionality.

an MLR “clip” is a region in the softcut buffer.
by loading a soundfile to a clip, you copy over that buffer region.
by assigning a track to a clip, you allow it to read and write in that region.
multiple tracks can affect the same part of the buffer. this can get weird.

if you want two tracks to intially use the same soundfile data, but then independently record over it or whatever, then load the same file into two different clips.

the midi.connect() function defaults to Device #1 - so yes, unless you have changed that in the script, the sync device will be in slot one.

weird = major feature

(softcut is rad!)

Are we able to reverse recorded samples or only loaded clips? I have tried to reverse a clip I just live recorded and it doesn’t seem to work…

you can definitely reverse a recorded clip. Its my understanding that whether its a loaded or recorded clip it is being played from the soft cut buffer

Hmmm… I wonder why I’m having some issues there. Mind letting me know what the key stroke would be? Do I hold reverse and press the play button of the clip I want to reverse?

mlr.pdf (283.3 KB)

here is the mlr key map. reverse is the middle column of page one

worth noting: it’s also possible to record in reverse, so if you play back a sound in reverse you’ve also recorded in reverse the audio will still be forward (kind of a double negative situation).

Jeez. Just finally got it. Thanks y’all. I was only hitting the bottom middle note, as the diagram confused me a little

Is it possible to loop one button to frame or what ever I should be calling it? I cant seam to figure out shorter then the 2 button loop.

I kind of remember this being possible with the original MLR but is as been a long time.

New to all things Monome, but having a lot of fun learning!

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around how to use the pattern and recall buttons. Also how to erase a recording on a track. I’m sure I’ve missed this info somewhere.

Anyone want to help my simple mind understand? Thank you!

Pattern recording:

  • To record a pattern press one of the pattern buttons to arm the slot.
  • As soon as you start pressing other buttons the pattern recording starts.
  • After pressing the armed pattern button again the pattern recording is saved to that slot and loops.
  • To stop the pattern loop press the button again. To start again, press again.
  • To delete the pattern recoding press and hold the top right button and press the according pattern button. This works the same to delete any recalls.

Recalls:

  • Press one of the recall buttons to arm a recall state.
  • Now you can press the buttons you would like to save to a certain position.
  • Press the according recall button again to save.
  • Every time you press that recall button the LEDs will jump to the button positions saved.

To erase a recording on a track I usually set overdub to 0 and record silence over it. But there is probably a more elegant workaround to that…

Ah thank you so much! Yeah, been using overdub to erase, but thought perhaps there was another way. Can’t wait to use the pattern function now that I know how!

Just a tiny ping back into the MRL/Norns world :
Is it possible to sync the pattern playback to a clock?

You can quantize the pattern recorder. But not playback(I think)

yeah in the current version the recorder start/stop events aren’t quantized, so no matter how precise you are with presses, a pattern loop will always drift out of sync. i think there is a github issue open for this.

By the way, would you happen to know if the four “recall” button also recall the clip selections or just the parameters in rec / cut view ? I’d give it a try but I’m in the middle of the session and it’d nice if I didn’t destroy everything I’m currently doing in the process of trying to find out ^^
