I was wondering if someone could explain the major differences between the Rollz-5 and the plumbutter? I built a bunch of Rollz over the summer and kept one to fool around with but didn’t really gel with it, so ended up letting it go. I could’ve experimented with resistor and cap values more, but ultimately had other projects I was interested in. As far as I can tell concerning differences, there’s 2 audio in’s to use some of the filters as actual filters, and there’s also fm inputs for each voice, and of course the deer horn; does that about cover it?

Also have a coco coming in the mail and can’t wait to explore. I hope it’s the new rosette style LEDs. So pretty.

I believe the most significant difference is the Man with the Red Stream, aside from the deerhorn which you’ve identified. Essentially two control circuits. One akin to a shift register sequencer, and the Deerhorn a kind of esoteric radio control.

I think for differences, PB has
stereo mixer
dust
snare
sequencer
deerhorn

there is verso/inverso control for mixer, rolls, avdogs, gongs, snare/dust

avdog is stereo, has fm in with attenuverter, cv out, and l/r audio out jacks

gong have fm in with attenuverter, cv out, offbeat out

ultrasound filter has cv in with attenuverter, and cv out

avdog and gong have 3 way toggle for off, trad, or gonzo mode

avdog, gong, and deerhorn have stereo aux inputs

2x 4 roll with rate knobs
2x 3 roll with rate knobs

I agree with @dianus and @triangle, all controls on Rollz-5 are manually set, .game changer imho on Plumbutter are FM inputs and CV control over everything (and CV generation with deerhorn, and stereo). The gongs go also way lower on Plumbutter than Rollz-5.

There are 3 stereo inputs. 1 goes to the gongues (filters), 1 to the avdogs, and 1 to the deerhorn.

I have a Coco 2 – and now a Plumbutter 2 on the way.
Any suggestions on how to mount both staggered? I think Loci should work. Anything else? Thanks!

i have a Loci stand that i use with my CL stuff and they’re pretty great! the one drawback is the hard wood they use can scratch the backs of your CL gear. i combat this by using a bit of adhesive backed foam strips i found at a hobby store. Works a treat!

Such a great idea! Unfortunately, it’s far too late of a discovery for me to avoid that :joy:

Plumbutter question: is there a max trigger rate for the gongues? I can’t get them to trigger faster than a certain rate even with the divider set to it’s shortest setting.

this only works on one of the gongues on my pb, but i’ve had some luck with patching the orange output from a 4-rollz into the green input and then taking the brown node from the opposite corner into the white audio output for that gongue.

by doing this, you can get faster triggering pretty easily, but the transient clicking from the pulses will be much more apparent due to the direct connection to the output mixer.

also, because this is a feedback loop, the gongue will respond differently at various pitches and can get very squealy at higher frequencies, so watch your output level!

I just picked up a lightly used plumbutter 2, and am wondering if there’s some tests I can do to verify that everything is working as expected? One thing I am noticing is that some of the knobs don’t turn all the way down, like they stop at 10 o clock or so. One is on the mixer, and the volume is turned all the way down when it’s at 10 o clock but that seems kinda weird. Appreciate any advice in advance! Happy holidays!

Sound like the knob just needs to be popped off and reseated? Some of the knobs on mine aren’t at the typical lower left position when down though.

Yeah shipping was mind blowing fast. What with a pandemic and the holidays and all of that. Tetrax showed up in like three days to california.

saw someone was asking about this on muffs so I made these two demos of how you can get faster gong pulling the roll and gong inverso to ground, In the first I use a Meng Qi Arcade Manifold and just pushing the button.

Second I just patch direct from the PB ground to the inverso’s

hope those give some ideas, using cv works too
