Hey just wanted to thank you for this trick rolls > gong output trick which would never have occurred to me to try. I used it in a patch last night, really fun to hear that kind of tempo in the PB.

That sounds awesome!! Thank you for posting it.

Thank you for the kind words and listening!

EDIT: Also forgot to share a shot of the backside with the wiring. I’m glad it mostly worked because debugging would have been awful

That’s good! I miss the sound of rollz5’s avdog, which is pretty different from PB’s, it sounds like harmonica. I think Ultrasound sounds a bit different from PB, too. especially when feeding complex cv from rollz. had to sold my rollz5 and now have only rolzer and PB but they don’t exactly sound like rollz5.

I agree with you. The av dogs are quite a bit more aggressive than the pbs. The ultrasounds I feel like get a bit more aggressive on the pb if you patch the yellows to the blues (and the noise gray) of the ultrasound output mixer. Been having a lot of fun with that.

Playing around this morning patching the Double Knot rungler outs to fm ins on the plumbutter gongs and dogs. The gongs are triggered by the DK audio into the gongs filter, the dogs are triggered by the gongs. Lots of possibilities here! [cross-posted from Double Knot thread]

There was a quatrax up for that price for a while too - whoever was selling it claim they had “waited over a year for it“, dropped it to $1995 and then withdrew their listing. Fwiw, While the listing was up, those were $1440 on Peter shop!

hi all - new person looking for advice here on building a ciat-lonbarde paper circuit machine; i have experience with putting together large-ish DIY kits but have no real experience with the concept of making a circuit on paper, would you recommend working with a literal paper circuit or ordering a custom pcb (something i have also not done before) for a first time ciat-lonbarde builder?

additionally although i have looked at peoples documentation for building machines like this i am a bit confused as to how more uncommon, interesting components, like the deerhorn paper circuits, five star brain, etc work together with other components. of course since i am newer to the idea of paper circuits i would be building smaller machines at first to work on building up skill on something like this… but i do want to have my options open for more interesting interfaces…

hopefully this goal isnt far too lofty for someone like me but building an instrument like this has always been a dream of mine

If you’re at all curious about building a paper circuit, I’d start with the lil Sidrazzi : LIL SIDRASSI MANUEL
It’s a very good introduction to what CL circuits do and it’s very accessible in the complexity of the build and the sounds it makes. The 2N3819 is getting harder to find but Mouser other places still have some.
Tip: if you’re ordering parts for the first time, get at least 100 of each of the resistors and Capacitors called for in the Sid. It will only cost about twice as much as 10 and you’ll use them in other builds later. Tayda is a good cheap source of parts but shipping takes a while.

there are some really really cool moments in this. is the pb the thing making sound only or is sound from the DK in there too?

Thanks for this. I’ve been wanting to build a few solar sounders, and I can solder but that’s about the end of my ee knowledge and I wasn’t really sure where to get parts. Mouser seemed to be out of most of what I started looking for.

Use Tayda - it is much more user friendly.

The biggest thing you will need to learn for sourcing parts is Cap conversions - some sites will say - oh its a .1μF (which is also a 100nF, which is also 100000pF) etc.
Package Types is another good thing to learn.
For instance a PNP and NPN transistor in our application is in a TO-92 Package.

Just little things like that.

For Resistors - most people use 1/4 watt resistors.
Peter tended to use 1/8 watt on his through hole stuff - but its entirely up to you!

If you want to get into the Solar Sounders - the BOM and explanations of the Cap Names (Horn, Call, Speak, etc) can be found in the Paper about Solar Sounders.
Or here is a cheat sheet.

Hope this helps!

Thanks John. I believe all sounds are from the PB. I plugged the DK into the gongs audio in, expecting to hear a filtered version of the DK audio, but what I got instead was the DK audio pinging the gong filters and playing the gongs? New to PB, and was surprised (and a little delighted) to find that. Is that correct behavior?

Nice! I think it depends on the q, like how you can ping a VCF with audio (or an envelope, though not sure if PBs audio inputs are dc coupled or not tho). At lower q values, the gongs do act as a stereo low pass (I think*, might be band pass) filter.

Good to know! I will do some more experiments today and see if I can get more of a blend of filtered DK and pinging.

This is good advice. I have been using this resource Capacitor uF - nF - pF Conversion Chart for years now for this very purpose. It can happen that you think Tayda don’t have a certain value in stock but after a look on the chart, you realise they do have it in stock listed with a ‘different’ value which is actually the same.
