For anyone interested, I just released an EP of 6 tracks I created only with sounds from a Plumbutter 2 sampled and arranged with a Digitakt and processed with a Microcosm. It’s called ‘Verso’ and it’s not the type of random pulses you’d get from a straight Plumbutter recording, but it’s not too far off (and you’ll immediately recognize the sounds for sure). I have links on my website where it’s available on most streaming platforms or you can download it or play it for free from Bandcamp. Curious to hear what you all think!

I’m glad I discovered CL before eurorack, everything you’ve mention has informed my eurorack purchases. I found an old tool case first that could house 4 rows of 85hp, I’ve stuck with that size, I’m more interested in performing live than composing these days
I use a self built ‘performable’ clock source, discovering Peter’s ‘psychogeographical’ approach to modular and John Berndt’s ideas on Relabi have influenced my own choices when building in eurorack.
I’d personally avoid any particular system, for CL integration you can definitely get a lot out of making a small case to possibly include a Mungo g0, Instruō Arbhar & maybe Noise engineering Lapsus Os, live granular, granular looping & a playable control surface that will allow taking some cv from a quantussy or PB for manipulating the granular elements. I’ve just put an Arbhar in my system and it’s a really nice approach to live loop making, it has a built in mic for capturing acoustic and I’m fairly sure the input will boost a signal from a simple audio player for field recordings etc.
Regarding the new cnc process, I notice that Peter & Patch-point have chosen a large amount of Larch wood for the european manufactured CL, I’m wondering if that’s a factor in the difficulties, larch is a fairly dense & very resinous wood, ideal for exterior building but not ideal from a intricate cnc point of view.

I’m really interested in the early CL circuits / machines. I’m becoming slightly obsessed with the original Fyrall, to the point that I’m contemplating producing boards, or something very inspired by it.
The paper circuits, as a collection, is a wonderful gift from PB to the community, especially now that the Osmond PCB files are available, and the community has made PCBs available at little cost.
The Fourses Tarp I’m currently tinkering with is a revelation. I really like the paradigm of chaotic oscillators into clocked logic, adding some order (via the binary choices) onto the chaos.
@rmro I have a Mostly Make Noise Euro system and, while I enjoy it, it is very different to CL. A Wogglebug, Maths, Morphagene and (maybe) Optomix will give you most of the MN flavour for sample mangling.

I recently dove headfirst into C-L waters and I’ve had mixed feelings so far. The initial response was “this is how I want to make music, this is my ecosystem”, but after wiring up the same patch a couple times, I couldn’t help but let my mind wander into the idea of trading it away for some more traditional gear.
After some further consideration I’ve decided that they aren’t going anywhere. I have plenty of traditional instruments, but these provide a truly one-of-a-kind experience. I have to occasionally remind myself that the music I make doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, it doesn’t have to be good in any way. As long as I can create a space where I can exist with my thoughts and explore sound and feelings I am doing something positive with my time. C-L is the most unique music-making experience I’ve personally come across.
There was also some other things that happened in my life that reinforced this notion. I lost a family member this week who was a big inspiration in my music-making. He gave me a guitar and some pedals when I was first getting started, and we would play together whenever we could. I can’t help but reflect on the importance of generational instruments. Something we can pass on to our loved ones when we leave this realm. My grandmother gave me my grandpa’s accordion when he passed, and while I would be perfectly happy with a ‘pawn shop special’, the fact that it’s a real Petosa concert accordion really elevates from an old instrument to a real family heirloom. It’s easily my most prized possession and I feel incredibly fortunate to own such a fantastic piece of my family’s legacy.
I do realize there’s a fair bit of privilege baked into that statement, but on the other hand my grandparents weren’t particularly wealthy. They have a humble home in rural Minnesota and such a valuable instrument is almost out of place there. I suppose that I inherited some of that mindset from him. I don’t have any money, but I do have some special instruments, and I look forward to sharing them with my loved ones!

i’m limited to minimum size of a 3u/104hp skiff as I’ve already uh bought a plumbutter this year but i’m really excited about “how little euro do i need” to articulate what i’m interested in with a PB/euro hang out.
my 5 year old is way more excited to goof with CL stuff than with euro. they haven’t really clicked with our basic digital piano yet, but also love shouting into a mic if a delay pedal is set up. they are a little small for my bass guitar, but we can lay it flat and mash on it. this is a huge digression from my gear thoughts above but i think it’s important when reflecting on expense and privilege (and the range of definitions of the latter - the privilege of having a real heirloom instrument is not the same as the economic privilege of say, the person who bought that condo across the street).

Thanks, this is the kind of info I’m try find out. The appeal to me of a small euro add on is that it could be super focussed in on live looping and manipulation. I’ve got a pedal looping setup too but I think the motivation is to refine and strip back as much as possible. Due to moving, the last six months or so have been an archtop guitar, dpa mic and a laptop and its been almost a relief in some ways.
It’s interesting how the CL instruments have taught me new ways of doing things—I notice how it all transfers back into software in both positive and negative ways.

I am getting an sq-1 (again…I have really missed it, such a fun hands-on sequencer), and I plan on using it with my plumbutter (gonna use my low gain jumbler for now to interface between). Couple questions:
- have people tried clocking it with rolls orange outs, or MWRS orange/red outs…or the other outs on the various sound makers? I vaguely remember there are some config button press type things to change the input modes with the sq-1, I had to change from the default to make it work with my bsp when I had it…is there one that works best for interfacing with ciat stuff?
- any fun/weird patches any one has experimented with that I should try?

@crucFX I had seen that before…I think I’m gonna leave it 3.5mm for now coz I also plan on using it with my ms-20 mini too. I’m thinking the jumbler should work well for interfacing it for now.

i love the kind of testimonials about the CL process versus other gear philosophies here… really illuminating to read others’ paths. and it’s kinda inspired me not to give up quite yet.
it also helped me narrow in on what’s frustrating me so i have a more specific question now. i love the CL chaos, but does anyone have good advice for… slower chaos? more gradual chaos? how can i slow some of these things down in real-time?
are there any good paper circuits for introducing some slow chaos to cocobutter? i really want to dust off my soldering iron.

i mean… build some rolz… with big fat caps.

The DDDM2 - or Madame Brasser and Master Brando can assist - quite textural and chaotic - but you pull from ground and throw some caps on a gator clip, you can get some nice textural slow drones.

I’m going to other way… I sold a bunch of euro to fund a Coco purchase. I so much prefer a few ecosystems made by one designer vs a million in euro. My setup is mostly Serge through Coco through a newly acquired Poly Beebo. I still have a few euro pieces for utility, which i have to run though a format jumbler, and I can’t wait to get rid of them. I really hate the aesthetic of most euro especially combined with multiple manufacturers, and hate the form factor of cramming everything together, jacks and small knobs… It’s so much more satisfying patching Serge and CL with banana mostly because the thought of the ui is much more planned out with a bit more real estate in mind. I find that in euro nothing ever felt inspirational, the Coco instantly felt this way. Don’t get me wrong, there are some head scratching quirks, but it feels like learning and playing an instrument, rather than just a collection of random parts.

ok, got a kind of (maybe?) interesting cocobutter patch. pretty basic but it’s a start.
i used @Hainbach’s wobble patch then added stuff to it. it still wobbles… kinda!
i made a texture loop in one of the cocos just using the organ sound from the other and ended up kind of getting it to pulse with one of the rolls. i wish i could get this pulse as well as pitch variation! is there a way to get both?
