I recently finished soldering up a lil sidrassi, old mister grassi and phosphate aluminum crystal simulator. One thing I noticed, all three of them make sound even when none of the nodes are being touched. I was able to find demos on youtube where it seems that the circuits only make noise when touched, but I was also able to find demos where they drone as they do in my builds. Anyone have an idea as to why this might be?

some things to note: The 1n914 diodes on my build are very small clear things with a bit of orange inside and black markings, I’ve seen builds where the diodes look like they are an opaque grey with black markings and are quite a bit larger. I built on pcbs and not paper.

i’m planning to order cables for pb2 and coco2 this week. i’m looking at the buchla ones at control right now which seem a good value. does 15x 5”, 15x 10” and 15x 20” seem like a good selection? will i regret the 5”? is this too few? any tips appreciated

It’s not enough. You can easily use 40 just self-patching the pb. Also I would not get the 5” ones. Once you start stacking, you have to account for vertical space as well as horizontal.

thanks! this is useful. should i look elsewhere than control? i wanna get good quality cables from the getgo. if anyone has a suggestion for lengths/quantities/brands i’d be appreciative

Kilpatricks on reverb are decent and not too expensive.

I wish there was a way to make a ‘sticky’ for banana patch cord sources.

is there any reason to buy pomona over kilpatrick or those modular addict ones?

Pomona are generally considered the best. I use the Buchlas, primarily because they’re a little less expensive and they’ve worked great with my CL equipment. No complaints.

I’ve not tried the modular addict ones, but that’s really reasonable pricing. I have a bunch of pomonas at this point but if I was doing it again, I’d probably go that route.

I like the modular addict ones. They have a nice soft feel to them, they are affordable. They don’t fit as tight as Pomona or Buchla cables, but I kind of like this as it is easier to just yank a patch out. I’ve also had to re-solder jacks on my PB2 after they got cracked by pulling out tight Pomonas with a slight twist… The fit is solid just not tight.

I can agree with @TanSaturn, though I don’t have much banana experience. The modular addict cables are priced nicely, and the quality is great. They have that rubbery / textured finish to them, and are a little stiff (which I like). That way, the spaghetti effect isn’t as bad. They fit in jacks securely, without being overly tight. They also come in a wide range of colors.

I have Bugbrand and Pomonas. I use the Pomonas all the time, i like how they are a bit stiffer and don’t get as high when stacking.

If you are a spending money to buy some, I would stick with the Buchla or Pomona. Unless the Kilpatrick have changed in the last 2 years, I had the old ones that came with the Phenol, as well as the ‘improved’ ones and they both had crumby connections. You could shake the Phenol and it created an LFO like effect. You would push a cable to reach a knob and get a crackle. Both problems were solved with Pomonas.

I also bought some simple banana ends to make some cables for my Buchla 208 and they also have the same problem.

Just spotted this on Insta!

Sidraw arrived from Meng Qi yesterday. It looks and sounds beautiful - it is definitely a very different beast to the standard CL sidrax in terms of plaing style and sonic potential… but you can tell the voice circuits for the two are the same, it’s just the way they have been implemented in each instrument. Can’t wait to keep exploring it’s possibilities.

I’d love to see some video (or hear samples) if you’re up for sharing!

Just wanted to say that I’ve tried most of the banana brand options here and ended up sticking with the Buchla cables in the end.

The Pomona’s are certainly the highest quality but I found them a little too stiff, I like some give in the cables!

I’d also argue the usefulness of the 5” cables. I’ve got a Sid, Coco2 & PB2 and find the 5” cables great for them. They’re perfect for all the feedback patching within each section of the PB without crowding the rest of the synth IMO :grimacing:

thanks for the reply - did you try the modular addict ones? im a total banana neophyte and would prefer not to rebuy cables so i wanna make the most informed decision upfront.

reading stuff about pomona causing the need for re-soldering PB2 has ruled those out for me. i guess im torn between modular addict and buchla (MA are cheaper obviously)

Can you elaborate on that? Not something I’ve heard. I don’t have a PB2 but I have noticed a couple of my Pomonas being pretty tight.

from upthread :

if memory serves i saw someone say something similar over at MW
