ok, the problem is (i think) the serial number. it shouldn’t have an underscore— i don’t recall the symptom. can you take a photo of the grid?

my suggestion is to download this: http://dangerousprototypes.com/blog/2010/01/27/pirate-rename-get-a-nicely-named-serial-device/

you’ll need to turn off the apple driver first:

sudo kextunload -bundle-id com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI

then “read” the usb data. change the underscore to a zero.

then turn the driver back on:

sudo kextload -bundle-id com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI

and maybe reboot

Yes that’s correct. I had the same question when I installed my Ansible a week or so ago. The keyed connector only goes one way.

Ableton Live having an on and off relationship with my grid. Often have just “none” in the device list for Terms or Mark Eats Clips.

Anything I might improve?

sounds like serialosc.maxpat isn’t doing a great job communicating with serialosc. what OS version are you on?

Hello all,

recently i was gifted an old grids64. Ive decided to start from the “beginning” and got mlr up and running on max 8. I can get it to run and make noise, and have dug through all the links, but i cant for the life of me figure out how to actually “play” mlr on a 64.

beyond trigger samples in various groups and getting them to change direction im at a loss. Ive read the readmes, and the grids docs page. Can anyone get me on the path?

also, should i even bother with mlr, or is mlrv better?

There’s a post here that shows how MLR is laid out on a 64 grid, with a corresponding mlr64 script. Hopefully that’s helpful?

I want to point out that mlr on the norns has alot of differences to the max version of mlr. (and its been awhile since I used max mlr)

so on this page it says"MODE changes the lower section of the grid, described below." which I assume means one button is a Mode change function. Yet i dont see that labeled anywhere.

@noiserock i cant afford a norns these days, but hope to maybe build a rPi version if I can ever get that figured out.

The top leftmost three buttons for play/rec, cut, and clip are all modes as far as navigation is concerned. Try using that mlr64.lua script instead of the standard one.

fwiw, norns stack also works fine on linux, and mostly fine on macOS. some changes to make this setup more usable are in the pipeline.

heh, thanks. But how does one run the lua script version without norns?

ok im realizing controlling the old version of mlr is actually pretty darned different from the norns one, which is why i was confused.

If you have Live with MaxforLive I would highly recommend re:mix. That was my “mlr of choice” until I started using norns mlr.

If not, please share what version of mlr you are using here, and I’ll try to make you a beginners guide

I dont have live, but hope to get it soon.

i am using what i assume to be the original MLR, which is fine for noodling around. This video shows the functionality, which is what ive been working with.

Yeah. So one major difference is that @tehn max mlr requires alit more interaction with the computer for sample loading/recording and other stuff(the norns version is alot more “standalone”). Are you hoping to use it with live input or just load premade samples?

yeah i realized that once i saw that video and learned that this version differs from Norns. There was a good 2 hours of frustration before that lightbulb came on.

what I had initially hoped for was to play MLR like all the instagram and youtube videos ive been watching this past year, but that is clearly going to require a norns.

so for now im in a good spot. I may map a midi controller to my version of mlr, or I may move on for now and try MGC from @IcaroFerre

regardless, I learned a bunch of things today, and that is Rad. thanks to everyone for the help!

shameless plug to say that anaphora is also not norns mlr but can do similar live input-based things
