@eblomquist if you don’t mind, would you be able to share some of the things you are hoping to do with the monome?

Sure. For starters, I want to be able to learn the Ansible apps for both Grid and Arc as well as the maxforlive ones.

I’m equally interested in eurorack and m4l… since I have both a Grid and an Arc but only one Ansible, and would like to be able to use both instruments at the same time, I suspect that m4l will be the initial focus, until I can get a second Ansible.

I’m thinking that I should try to learn the existing applications before aspiring to try to write something new.

This probably sounds pretty pedestrian, but it’s at least a start…

I think it’s a very sensible place to start, and where most of us start, and I agree that the learning curve can be daunting. That first step is a doozy. We could certainly do more to help.

(The royal “we” as I don’t really have time, which is a sore point for me at the moment)

@eblomquist I’m curious, how do you feel about the Ansible docs? Helpful?

So - Just ordered a monome. Excited to get my hands on it.

Now, i’m looking a little closer at Norns…

What capability does Norns have that a computer doesn’t? Are Norns applications (or instruments) able to be used on the monome grid / computer without owning norns? What are the reasons to get norns other than removing a computer from the picture? Is it worthwhile to purchase if someone isn’t terribly interested in creating their own applications/Instruments?

At first thought, it seems like it would be nice to be able to record right into it compared to having to record through something else first, and have a tool that can be programmed around, but i’m curious to find out the appeal of those who own it. Not sure i’m getting the whole picture from my research into it.

Theoretically anything on Norns could—with typically a nontrivial amount of work—be made to work on a laptop. There are some efforts in this direction but nothing is quite a drop-in replacement at the moment. One reason for the Norns is to lower the maintenance and barrier to writing scripts that the community can use.

i got a grid first for use with ableton after many years on and off with various launchpad emulations. i’m sure there are many other reasons (check out the threads on here: single purpose computers as well as computers, they aren’t so bad! for more on this surprisingly controversial issue), but to me what pushed me towards getting the norns was “removing the computer from the picture.” OS/ableton/max updates all tend to render a bunch of other folk’s apps/guides/troubleshooting advise obsolete in ways that are impossible to know without putting a bunch of time into finding out.

so the experience with the “official” grid was definitely a huge step up from trying to make my launchpad work, but still resulted in the occasional time sink of trying to figure out why macOS was not seeing the FTDI driver it should see/why Ableton 10 uses Max 8 but my patch only works in Max 7/what isn’t backwards compatible between max 7 and 8/why do I have Max 7? etc etc etc.

for me it was worthwhile to pay just to avoid thinking about any of that stuff, but you definitely don’t need to get both, especially not at once.

Hi! I have a grid on the way and am waiting for ansible to come back in stock.

Currently I have an Ableton 10 Suite license with M4L.
Are there any favorite M4L devices y’all have to play around with until I either bite the bullet on Max 8 or receive ansible?

Both of these are great!

Perfect! Thank you @alanza. I was looking for a M4L mlr style app too. This is excellent

Do I need max 8 to install the apps from @stretta? it looks that way. (sorry I’m such a noob).

If you have M4L you should have the M4L version of Max 8, no? To install, I think you actually just add the folder where the apps are to your Live Collection, and then drag one into your set.

Yep! You’re right. Sorry, seemed too simple to be true honestly. Perfect

Anxiously awaiting my grid to arrive on Thursday. Found a grayscale grid for a good price. However, I didn’t think about the lack of variable button lighting potentially being an issue…

Anyone know if I’m going to run into any problems running current versions of applications on a grayscale grid?

you’ll probably run into some issues depending on the app you want to use. Many of the more recent apps (and specifically scripts on norns) make use of vari-bright.

but… bookmark this thread

Hi!

n00b here again.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get Ableton 10 to see my Grid.
I installed serialOSC and I also found an install of LiveOSC and dropped it into the MIDI remote scripts folder and it does not show up in the MIDI setup of ableton. Am I missing something here?

Help please

Edit: Is there something more updated than this??

I also read this: https://monome.org/docs/setup/

you should not need LiveOSC, I’ve never heard of it before; probably it would be better to remove it. you have serialoscd installed and running? have you restarted your computer since installing serialoscd?

I found that in the pages beginner setup, only reason why I tried it is because I installed serialoscd and restarted without it showing up as a device in Ableton, what ports is it supposed to show up on usually??

I see it showing up in my activity monitor too

That looks good. Dumb question—are you trying to use the Grid as a MIDI controller through Live’s MIDI setup? Because that doesn’t happen out of the box. You need to use an M4L device that is grid-enabled. That device will handle messages to and from the grid.

Not dumb!

I have been opening up M4L devices and there is no grid being detected from what I gather. Gotta run out of the house for a bit so I’ll have to try later. Will report back in a few hours.

Okay, I tried again and still, nothing.

Opened up Max 8 and there is no grid available as well. Just made sureI had java up to date too…

Any other things to try?

Edit: found this thread about high sierra and at the end it touches Mojave (which I’m on currently)

Looks like I’m having the same problem as another user.

Grid is lighting up when I plug in the USB cable into a USB C hub (Maybe thats the issue?)

Gosh this is slightly frustrating :frowning:
