A coding interface in Eurorack! What next a modular in my computer?!

CV 1 V 5 to set cv 1 to 5 volts, in my mind, couldn’t get any simpler. CV.SLEW 1 500 for slew 1 to 500ms, again.

i knew there’d be resistance to “programming” so in a sense this is more of a parameter-setting interface-- just think about having a list of VST params, and you type their values in.

but the syntax includes a ton of data manipulation commands (RAND, ADD, etc) to make the parameter setting more interesting. and the pattern system provides musical flexibility so your scripts can be very short.

on the surface this is computery. but really it’s so narrowly purposed that it feels totally at home in a modular rack. i think of it as an algorithmic sequencer and composition interface-- something i can use instead of a piano-midi-keyboard or normal step sequencer to play oscillators/etc. the thing powers up absolutely immediately and runs without the keyboard, so it could be used for solely precomposition, and never touch a keyboard in performance.

for me the reason this makes sense to live in modular is that there are great sounds sources and filters etc available in hardware. i like patch-ability. but as it stands, event-creation in eurorack is straight up boring. sure, there are rhythm generators and note sequencers or you can use a midi interface, but those are pretty tried, true, and tired. the tele allows for much more complex/nuanced/dynamic/evolving event generation, which can be turned into music.

also-- the things about computers that are creatively interruptive are things like soundcard setup, midi routing, huge project management, bad UI, unstable software, and the inherent distraction of having a web browser. teletype has none of these. it’s like having a terminal from the 80’s. it’s absolutely defined and very useful.

the keyboard is remarkably nice. it’s basically an apple ripoff. same key height and tiny footprint. i don’t think anyone will be disappointed once experiencing it-- or seeing a full photo of the setup. it basically matches the height/size of the aluminum 128.

modular in computer, you mean max?

i loosely call this “live code” because the syntax is radically simplified compared to “code.”

Wow, so creative! It’s a little scary, but I’m sure I’ll go there. The goal for me is always to master new tools and then use them to create music. The fear–and I ran into this for a few months when I initially got into Monome/Max–is that I get bogged down in learning technical stuff and stop making music. But if the tool is worth it, I suppose it’s worth the time spent.

At any rate, bravo to you for thinking so waaaaay outside the box!

the learning curve between max and teletype are incomparable. the “manual” for teletype will be a few pages at most.

most importantly-- the module has to do things you’re interested in (or need) musically.

If the syntax is that easy, then this should be a blast. I suppose I just need to see it in action more. I know with meadow physics I get lost a times because once you get some interactions going, it’s sometimes hard to parse what’s going on. It feels more like luck than conscience control. With anything, it just requires mindful practice, and a willingness to let go.

When I saw this the other day, I knew that if the usb was connected to a computer I would pass on it, but if it was connected to a keyboard I would have to grab it.

Imho, you struck a great balance between fun computer abilities and an all out computer. I’m sold! Where can we preorder?

In a lot of ways this is maybe what I wanted from the aleph (minus the dsp of course).

Since my rack is super small (and I just shuffled things around - ha!). I’m going to have to seriously consider whether I can actually make use of this, since it changes how one approaches playing a modular, but count me in as seriously impressed and intrigued. :open_mouth:

What’s the hp on one of these suckers?

While watching the video, I thought that in addition to note selection by voltage/semitone, using notes names (C#, G etc.) would be very usefull.

I find that many times, when using my modular, I am playing some notes on a keyboard first, to get a melody I like. It would be a lot easier to translate that into teletype if I could use the note names. That is definitely an option that I would appreciate.

i’d considered this, but given your oscillator could be tuned wherever, this seemed misleading. i considered interval names m2, M3, P4, P5 etc but that’s not very normal for people either. it’s something to consider for a firmware update once people have it in their hands and have a tested opinion.

the tracker mode is super fun.
