Did you ever find a solution to this?

I recently purchased a used Morphagene and can not run certain modules through it without a bit of clipping. 2HP Pluck seems to clip the most, and it gets worse when filtering through Three Sisters. Auto-leveling doesn’t seem to cut it, so I end up having to attenuate first — pretty annoying.

The module has RMA info scrawled on the back in Sharpie. I wonder if it was returned because of this clipping issue during one of its past lives.

Auto levelling is a bit of nightmare with morphagene imho - wish they’d added an attenuator instead. A bit of a long shot but have you tried it rebooted with the SD card removed? I think this returns the module to the default modular level and has solved some of my clipping issues until I put the SD card back in. (I think the level of attenuation is saved to the SD card.) I might be totally wrong about all of this, but worth a shot maybe!

Thanks, I’ll have to give that a try!

I also wish it had an attenuator. Would be cool if they could add it as a button/knob combo in a firmware update.

I tried to use the auto-leveling with a constant sine source and that helped a bit, but didn’t alleviate the issue completely.

Agreed imo it’s a perfect module except for this and the noise, I’m sure there was a very good reason why there could not be a level control, but it is very unfortunate.

Maybe try a square wave instead of a sine? Really max out the voltage going in? (So totally guessing at this point!)

It seems the only way to really get around the noise is to not sample with it which does take away a lot of its magic. If I prepare sounds in reaper and then load them into my morphagene it stays pretty clean. Any time I use it to sample external audio directly there’s plenty of noise.

I’ve had noise too, but solved it by changing where my power supply was plugged into, changing my case around, changing cases, etc. it comes and goes and when it shows up, I always get it to go away. Also unplug all usb cables and change where they’re plugged into, powered, etc. quality noise isolating hubs, etc. gotta think like a detective.

Sorry to hear you are having troubles, @zzzach. To be honest I haven’t really run into this problem that much since I posted here, so I think I have either just subconsciously worked around it or just gotten more used to managing levels in my rack (I am still a beginner).

I corresponded with Make Noise at the time and nothing in their reply made me think there was an actual problem with my module. I think it’s just the way it is and I’ve learned to manage it.

That being said, I’ve had a ton of fun with this module so I don’t regret getting it.

my Morphagene has a not-so-pleasant habit of applying a different default gain when the microSD card is in or out. It’s quieter when the card is out (which is how I often use it). I assume this is stock behaviour. I’d love to see it fixed changed. For now I try hard to remember the auto-gain button combo and always have to look it up :expressionless:

I wonder if there’s a proven method of setting the input gain amplification to the absolute possible minimum.

Using the square out from Mangrove to set the auto level seems pretty effective for me, but I still get a touch of clipping at times. Pulling the SD card also helps, but I believe any custom settings would be lost without it.

Recently new Morphagene owner; the Dry inputs produce a constant sound like “air going through a straw”; full CW on the dry/wet control and the sound is gone. I’ve noticed this straw noise in demos as well, and it seems to get worse when I use auto-leveling. Anyone else notice this sound or have a fix for it?

Have you tried auto leveling with a pretty loud signal? That’s typically what i do, and results in a pretty noise free experience.

@sketcherazzi I tend to get best results when I auto level with nothing plugged into the inputs. Sometimes I have to plug and unplug the input a few times but that noise will disappear usually on the 2nd or 3rd attempt.

Thanks, that seems to have worked!

OK since my last post I have to admit the Morphagene still has quite a bit of “tape hiss” coming through. If I auto-level with nothing patched as MathewAshmore suggests, the tape hiss goes away but then reappears whenever any sound is passing through the Morphagene. This is also after I added a 4ms Listen module to boost my incoming audio to modular levels.
If I auto-level with a loud modular signal like 0-Coast’s square, the tape hiss is still quite present. Maybe filtering after the MG is the only way to deal with it?

just get the latest firmware and forget about auto-leveling)

Has anyone been able to get rid of the hiss after the new firmware? I have mine consistently set to low and it’s pretty much unusable as a sampling device. I have it in a shared system plus, with the only two modules added as the XPAN and Crow, so I can’t imagine it’s a power issue.

New owner here. I also get the noise, a somewhat hollow sucking sound at times. fortunately not super unpleasant. Figured it was due to auto-leveling on a quiet signal - condenser mic on piano, will try leveling on a very loud one I guess. I remember reading the input level is stored on card - perhaps the first numbers?

Was just reading the manual and see in M203 firmware there is no longer auto gain leveling. Hold record and press shift to cycle through settings Blue low, Purple high. See page 38 of manual. Makes sense as auto leveling didn’t really seem to be working! The body of the manual still says auto-level is a thing, but the notes say this new manual switching has REPLACED auto level.
