I guess I can’t give specific dB levels, but I’m recording as hot as I can without clipping. SOS is fully clockwise

If recording into MG, you want the sos knob fully counterclockwise!

i’ve found that limiting and/or normalizing to -4db seems to be the best level for imported audio

I think that is exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. Thank you!

You shouldn’t need to record into the Morphagene first if you already have them in the DAW. Just make sure you have healthy levels and do some compression and normalization before exporting to the card.

I wrote a script to batch convert multiple Wave files into a single reel (with splice markers). I used this script to automatically convert dozens of drum kits into Morphagene reels. The script is available here https://github.com/olt/mgreel (you need to know what a command line and what npm is).

Lorenzo Stanco added my script to his Morphagene web tool: https://www.lorenzostanco.com/lab/morphagene/#mgreel
Just drag and drop your Wave files (doesn’t matter if mono/stereo/16bit/32bit/etc.). It all happens inside your browser and nothing gets uploaded.

I also used this script to convert all Adventure Kid Wave Forms (AKWF) to reels for wavetable syntheses. I’ve uploaded these reels here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z57avpy8ay0aqbt/AKWF-mgreels.zip?dl=0

See the Make Noise video for a tutorial (make sure to set “vsop 2” and “gnsm 0”):

this script is going to be a gamechanger for me! thank you

Just discovered the web tool and it’s so helpful and very easy to use: https://www.lorenzostanco.com/lab/morphagene/

@divmod I didn’t know your wrote the script. It is so useful. Thanks for making it.

Whoa that is a real helpful thing! Nice!

Never bookmarked anything this quick. Amazing.

Wow. What a thread. I need to dive into this one. Morphagene headed my way.

Got one about a week ago. Part of my 2020 retail therapy expensagansa. This thread has made me SO EXCITED to get in to it though.

has anyone changed the settings on the options.txt file and gotten any cool results/workflow improvements? getting the hang of the basics and will have to dive into that this weekend

The best thing I could recommend is using the web tool mentioned above and experimenting with the same reel/sounds but different settings.

Another fun thing is to use 2 microSD cards with the same reel but different options.txt file. You can swap them out as you’re playing and get an immediate feel for how things have changed. Just be mindful of that blinking SHIFT light.

Do not remove microSD Card while it is busy, as indicated by the Shift Button Flashing.

This video with the INOP 1 setting first convinced me I needed a MG:

One thing I’ve never figured out with my Morphagene regarding the SD card is that sometimes when I take it out and put it in my PC it is stuck in read only mode and I can’t copy anything to it. I always make sure to wait for shift to stop flashing. Usually after a bit of use if I try again it changes back to read and write mode as expected.

I’ve never figured out what exact sequence of events puts it in read only mode. Anyone noticed this and worked out a ‘best practice’ for removing it?

If you’re using an SD adapter, check whether the adapter has a read-only switch on the side that’s getting moved when you stick it into the computer. It’s a silly thing, but it’s tripped me up a surprising number of times.

I’ve definitely been caught out by this before! But for a while now I’ve had a dedicated micro SD slot and am still having the problem.

Curious what modules you all would suggest here. My Palette has a BIA that I like to use for all sorts of random sounds. I send in MIDI sequence from Ableton when needed and I use Plugins for my effects so I don’t need those in my build. Morphagene is coming next week. To modulate it I have :

Clep Diaz, Pam’s, Dual VCA 1u. I also have an MMF filter.

I have 16hp available. I’m not sure if pullling out the Clep and adding something like Maths, which is pretty large for this case would make much sense.

I should be able to generate plenty of slow LFOs out of Pams, and I can even attenuate them I believe in Pams as well.

Or would it make more sense to get a stereo filter or something else? I’d love some ideas for something to consider that I haven’t thought of.

Plans for the Morphagene will be starting tracks by morphing vocal samples or lead melodies into new melodic ideas. Recording pads, stabs, synths, etc into it and warping them into new sounds. screwing up drum breaks and perc loops and making them into background percussion parts.

Also, If it makes sense to record into the Morphagene now and not just use the SIM card, do I just need 2 1/4 to 1/8 adapters for my line out cables from my RME interface? It would be pretty cool to be able to feed youtube samples and parts that I played in Ableton straight in. I do that with my octatrack a lot.

From what I’ve noticed, just 1/8 to 1/4 are suitable. I’ve played things straight in to the morphagene. Sounds great, fantastic way to get cranking. I’ve been exploring creating my own solve marks in the computer to have interesting textual reels already to go, without having to write about recording them al live in. Really fun too.

As for the modulation, it’s depends on how crazy you want to get. The Maths really becomes fun when you use the mixer portion, the logic portion and patching it in to itself. There’s a TON there. If it’s just the LFO modulation and simple movement, using the Pam’s might be the choice for you! Create two LFO’s, depending on the speed, one to be fed out to the VCA and one to slowly open and close the VCA.

As for a stereo mixer; I’ve had the option to output stereo a few ways (including Morphagene and mimeophon being at the end of chain) and I rarely use it. Maybe it’s personal taste, but I want more control over stereo spread when I’m working with that extra dimension of space and find that I’d rather place basically mono sounds in a mix later down the line. But that’s also because I’m a control freak. Often times with stereo on Modular, it’s just too hard to feel like the spread will sound good everywhere. So, that’s to say the stereo mixer will be a ‘case by case’ basis. Also, the mimeophon, which we’re not talking about here, has a greater use for the stereo function with the skew control, but now I’m just granular in this. Hah.
