We added some affordable housing in hopes of supporting the local barn owl population.

The first year we lived in our house there were bats in the back yard all summer. We promptly bought a bat house in the hopes of enticing them to move in and stay. Six years later, we’ve never seen another bat — not even once.
I hope you have better luck with your barn owls.

This is our second box. First box year one had no owls move in, so we increased the height of its pole from 8’ to 12’ and in March of year two, a mama moved in. We think this new box is in an even more enticing position. Fingers crossed!
(Our kestrel box has never had so much as a visitor though)

Took a break from doom scrolling, to visit the Begonia House in Wellington… So good (but super humid with a mask on) - do all Botanic Gardens have a hot house?

interestingly the Botanic Garden in Golden Gate Park does not have it’s own greenhouse. that’s the Conservatory Of Flowers which is not far away (in the same park) but a separate entrance fee (the Botanic Garden is free for residents so i’ve got a whole lot from there).

Kew Gardens (aka “The Royal Botanic Gardens”) here in London has a palm house which I recall was pretty hot and humid.

Missouri Botanical Gardens has “the Climatron,” which on hot summer days doesn’t really feel much different from the outside air.
