they editions all have variation even within shipments. if you want a matching set we’d need to hand pick at the same time. (this has been the case since we switched from orange to white forever ago)

this is normal for LEDs, but we make sure each grid is aasembled with the same bin so each grid itself with be consistent across the 128 pads

top grid is june/lavender. bottom is more warm white.

ah, thanks @tehn. my wife said “be happy! now you’re able to keep them apart”, haha.

If you want to trade so they match I’d be up for it.

i’d love to marcus but i do live on the other side of the planet.

What was the resolution for the excessive stiffness? Did you instruct @lua on how to open up the Grid and loosen something?

He did. It was a no go.

just to close the loop – if you believe that your grid is exhibiting excessive + unplayable stiffness, then please email help@monome.org to arrange service. we’ve got a replacement pad on the way to @lua

Couldn’t find it thru searching: what’s the weight of these new 2021s? Still 830gram?
I have a wonderful 2012 vb256, but it is quite heavy and not really suited for holidays :innocent:

much lighter! ~567 grams / 1.25 pounds

see below for new stock announcement

we’re glad to announce that grids are now available again for pre-order. batches will be shipped in mid-november, mid-december, and mid-january.

we’re a very small team: three people, hand-building these instruments in our workshop using materials from suppliers mostly within a few hours drive. global manufacturing is complicated, now more than ever. semiconductor shortages and factory shutdowns have introduced delays and price increases and we’re starting to feel this now.

we recently released a new grid whose price was set during a pre-pandemic reality, yet we very much want to maintain this new level of accessibility.

historically we’ve received a lot of demand for what we were calling b-stock: instruments with subtle scratches that are in fact new and perfectly functional. we very much prefer to sell these directly, rather than send them back to the machine shop which requires a terrific amount of energy (both fossil fuel and human labor) in addition to time. it’s not that our shop makes bad work. it’s just that many of us expect a level of perfection which is difficult to achieve without increasing prices. so typically at the end of an edition we’d be left with what we felt wasn’t passable.

we’ve come upon a solution: we’re splitting each edition into two grades.

  • if you’re in a position to further support our work, $600 will ensure you receive a pristine instrument. if multiples are ordered, we’ll ensure that they have matching color temperatures.
  • if you’re ok with the possibility of a minor scratch, $550 remains an option.

thank you for your continued support and understanding— we look forward to getting these instruments out into peoples’ hands.

maybe the increased power efficiency could actually realistically allow for that? huh!

i love my vb walnut 128 and 64, also love the new designs but have seen no real reason to upgrade… a 256 would be such a great reason though!
