Oscilloscopes are really really handy. OTool or Mordax Data are two ways to get a scope into your rack. Or just get a used oscilloscope at a flea market.

Good thread about getting started with modular (links to a few other relevant threads)

The difference is that the VCA is a Voltage Controlled Amplifier, i.e. it does things based on an incoming control voltage (it has an input and an output but also a CV input to control the amplification/attenuation). If you just want to control things by hand you don’t need a VCA but if you want to control things with another module then you need a VCA.

I think that “Amplifier” is mostly a misnomer with respect to VCAs.

They’re actually mostly Attenuators in that they typically cannot raise the voltage level above the input level, only reduce it.

I learned this the hard way when I was looking to boost a signal with the Sputnik Valve Multiplier.

If you’re looking for an amplifier, make sure that it actually supports over-0 (over-unity) gain.

For someone new to modular, how would you distinguish an attenuator module from a VCA? They certainly don’t operate in the same way…

An Attenuator module is typically not voltage controlled. It uses a potentiometer (knob) to set the attenuation level.

This thread has suggestions for over-unity VCAs, which can actually be called amplifiers.

The way to tell is to look at the module’s maximum gain, which may be expressed as decibels (dB). 0 dB is unity, meaning it won’t amplify. Every 3 dB indicates roughly 2x gain, or a doubling of the voltage.

Some do have CV, but I guess they’re often called VCAs (or mixers) at that point. Maybe the important point is to look beyond the labels and language and think about what’s actually happening to voltage and signal in the module before purchasing it. Marketing copy just doesn’t cut it, especially when you’re learning.

Hi guys, Im struggling a bit to find a proper portable (skiff) case for my backpacked Teletype w/ 2 Telex , Ansible and Earth Sea, not to mention I would love to connect my Just Friends to the TT as well, any ideas? As fas as I measured, it has to be at least 6.5cm deep because those telex jumpers connected to backpack demand that much…

cheers

Chris

Have you had a look at builders on Etsy? Some nice creations there.
