Thanks for sharing, that doesn’t sound particularly encouraging but maybe there is a solution that someone has discovered or is working on… this is Lines after all!

I’ve used a Sevilla soft connected either via Norns or my Mac (for using with @dan_derks’s Less Concepts apps) to Ansible. Norns was fine, the Mac app I was a bit confused by which channel on the Sevilla soft to send messages. I am always a bit confused by Ansible’s midi modes, but that is more to me not rtfm-ing enough.
I think @mlogger uses the Sevilla soft (i bought if off his recommendation in the less concepts thread), maybe he can jump in with tips.

It was the Ansible modes that was first confusing.
I use Mode 3. This should be the default setting instead of the ASR type Mode 1.

Allocation style 3: MULTI

4 pairs of CV/TR mapped in simple MONO pitch/gate outputs responding to MIDI channels 1-4.

Interface

  • Key 1 : Panic (clear all tr/cv)
  • In 1 : Panic
  • Key 2 : Change allocation style
  • In 2 : (nothing currently)

Sometimes you also need to press Key 1 at first to clear the TR/CV depending on the app.

@mlogger thanks for taking the time to clear this up, I was confused about using mode 1 & mode 3 w/ less concepts. cheers!

Hi peoples!

First time posting for me on this beautiful forum.
Just got TT, Ansible and Grid.
Everything is super confusing, but I love the outlook of one day understanding a bit of what‘s possible with this powerhouse combo.

First question:
I hooked up TT, Ansible and ER-301 with the I2C multi cable. Not because I know how to use that functionality, yet, but just because I could.

When I plugged Grid into Ansible, some buttons in the upper left corner shortly blinked and then… nothing.
I re-plugged Grid a couple of times. Same scenario.
After I pulled the I2C cable from Ansible everything worked fine.
Is this normal?

Cheers for all the great and friendly minds lurking on lines!!

It is in the sense that having some difficulty getting one’s I2C setup cooperating is normal  Maybe try one connection at a time and make sure everything is wired in the right order. It may also be helpful to go through all the information in this thread.

Thanks.
I read that whole thread yesterday, bit it’ll take some time until I understand everything.
I think I can rule out a power issue as it’s said that green-pcb TTs (like mine) should be fine with only two modules attached to the bus.

some ER-301s have their I2C ports different from how they are on Teletype? worth a check over things again I think

triple-check your i2c cable polarity. Be sure you have them all properly GND-GND, etc. Esp the ER-301 if its an older one that have SDA and SCL reversed.

I have the latest 301 revision (bought in April) so that should be fine I think.
At least that‘s what I thought I’d read somewhere.

Can I break one of the devices if the polarity isn’t correct? If not I’ll just see if something changes when I flip the cable.

Don’t do that.

You’d be shorting voltage to ground - which might not break anything, but it’s just generally a bad idea.

Visually inspect the connections. Post a picture here if your really unsure.

@mlogger can you share your thoughts on the Sevilla Soft midi dongle thing? Thanks!

I bought it specifically so I could output midi from Norns because the sequencers on Norns are incredibly inspiring - like Loom, Orca, Fugu (Fugue Machine) and Less Concepts.
It allows 2 midi hosts to talk to each other. It was recommended by other users who have used it with the Organelle which is also a midi host.
Ansible and Norns are 2 midi hosts, a regular midi out from Norns to Ansible does not work.
I’ve also used the Sevillasoft from my computer to Ansible which works also, but I want something more portable (like Norns) for some sequencing rather than a laptop.
It’s plug and play, small, no external power and just works and because I have a Norns and 2 Ansibles, this is perfect

FWIW - I will have a demo version of a similar DIY (usbmidi) host-to-host device later this week (pcbs shipped today).

Primarily aimed at getting USBMIDI between 2 norns or between a Raspberry Pi and Norns, but works OK great so far with norns and computer/ableton.

I will also need to test this with Ansible and report back.

Please share your findings with Ansible. Really looking to have a way to hop between MLR on norns and Ansible sequencing my euro

Edit: I think I may be thinking of a switch and not what you’re talking about above.

I’m sure this question has been answered somewhere in the forum, but I’ve not found the answer I’m looking for, so my apologies if this is redundant… I am looking at getting into the monome ecosystem with my eurorack setup and I am intrigued by Norns, grid, and ansible. Right now I am doing all my sequencing with René 2 but I am wanting an even more interactive experience. I am wondering if it would be possible to sequence my rack with Norns through something like captain midi In hemispheres (ornament and crime). I am drawn to Norns because it could be so much more than a sequencer, and can easily be traveled with. Of course, I’d like to but all three, but I’m trying to resist that urge though ansible in the place of René would free up a lot of space…

Should be doable. I will give this combo a try later and report back

Update - seems to work just fine. :+1:

Good to know, and thanks for going through the trouble!

I might want to upgrade the firmware on my teletype, and I’m looking at what I believe to be the official update information.

I’m a bit unsure/worried when it comes to hardware:

  1. Should I be able to stick an USB A-A cable between the usb port on the front (whe my keyboard normally sits) and a laptop?
  2. I have an USB A-A of unknown origin (could it have been included with my TT?) that looks like photo at the end. Is that safe to use? IOW wil a “transfer” cable (as the docs mention will not work) or any other cable for that matter dammage my teletype/computer? I remember the USB A-A-lookalike cable that came with my (now sold) doepfer ribbon controller came with a warning: don’t use as USB cable, you will break stuff. Any tests that will make sure the cable is good?

Not sure what you mean by

But…

I have a generic USB a to a cable I got from amazon. I use it as described in your point number 1. I updated my TT last night with no problems. After backing up my scenes of course.
