Is there an app for Ansible that would turn it into a basic keyboard when Grids is attached? So you could use your Grides to play your modular?

You can also use regular Earthsea on Ansible 2.0.0 to patch gate/CV to whichever modules you like. Polyphonic Earthsea has more advanced capabilities and is particularly suited for controlling I2C-capable modules (Just Friends, TELEXo, ER-301) as voices, but is a separate firmware that you would have to reflash onto Ansible. I have experimental support (posted as a beta build here) for adding I2C leader support to Ansible, so you could use Kria, Meadowphysics, or Earthsea to play TXo or ER-301 (JF still needs some work).

You may also be interested in using the Grid with a computer as a Linnstrument-style isomorphic keyboard that talks to a DAW via this program.

Thanks for the reply’s! Really appreciate it…

Random newbie modular question here:

Planning out a modular setup right now, and i’m interesting in running a white whale alongside an ansible. I’m going to be getting the make noise bus case which has 1A of 5V power. I don’t have anything else planned that would pull 5V power. Looks like white whale pulls 42mA of 5V power.

Is it safe for me to assume that i’m ok here, and won’t require a switch? Very new to modular so I don’t want to make any assumptions.

Edit: looks like the pull is 600mA with a grid - Still should be enough to power it, right?

As long as this is all that’s on your 5V I think you should be fine, though some users have still had issues with electrical noise from the grid coupling into their euro supply. Since Switch is discontinued I believe the recommended solution at this point is to use this “ground loop adapter” cable and a >= 1A USB power supply to power the grid, which is a pretty inexpensive option for peace of mind.

Awesome. Thank you!!

Depending on the version of the board, I would advise caution. I’ve blown the earlier version of the Make Noise busboard with WW and a 128 grid. I’d definitely recommend powering the grid by other means.

Yikes. thats good to know. Thinking about going to the Intellijel Performance case instead to get some more 5V power. Either way, think i’ll power it externally because i definitely don’t want to fry the board.

Just checked my email correspondence with MN at the time. The older board only supplied 250mA on the 5V rail, so hardly surprising that I toasted it! But as others have mentioned the other downside of powering the grid that way is the addition of noise.

Confusing myself doing research about Ansible…

Can someone tell me if Ansible is able to run without a grid plugged in like white whale and teletype can?

Yes. Ansible will continue to run whatever you have sequenced when the grid is unplugged.

Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t you need to get Ansible started with a grid plugged in, at least for the Grid apps?

In other words, if you want to run Kria or Meadowphysics or Earthsea, you need to have a Grid plugged in to initialize the patterns… I don’t think that is wrong…

I believe it’s the same with Arc apps…

You should be able to run one of the MIDI modes without a Grid at all…

But for my purposes the MIDI modes are a bit underwhelming compared to the Grid apps…

In order to run the different sequencers you need either a grid or arc to control what notes are being played, but once that sequence is up and running it will continue to run if you unplug the grid/arc. You can save the sequence and power down your case, ansible will continue playing the sequence you had running when you power back up and you don’t need the grid/arc plugged in when you boot up for it to play. But if you want to change anything about the sequence you need either the grid/arc or a teletype.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the sequence surviving a power cycle, I wasn’t aware of that!

However my impression of the original question was whether an Ansible could be used without a grid at all. I may have misunderstood that question…

I have a grid so ideally i would like to set a pattern, unplug from ansible and then plug into teletype to use it live on teletype. This should be doable, right?

Yup. For instance you can fill your ansible with different kria presets and unplug the grid and plug the grid directly into the teletype and use the grid-ops to meta sequence the kria presets in your ansible. You may need a newer teletype/grid, I think there were power issues before, I got mine both this year.

Perfect. Thanks!!

@eblomquist - i should’ve ellaborated - i do have a grid already. Thanks for the help!

yes. when you first power on it will run the last state it was in when it had a grid connected and was powered on. i.e. I can run ansible in “Kria” mode, set up a sequence with grid connected, and after I unplug the grid it will still continue to run the same sequence. As long as that pattern was saved, even if you turn off the modular and than turn it back on again, ansible/kria will automatically be running that last sequence.

I better learn how to save then!!!
