Greetings,
I am a relatively new Monome Ansible and Grids user(2021) with some initial questions about some of the Grid pages when using Kria. There doesn’t seem to be any mention in the documentation.

Could someone please explain the functions of the 5 lit buttons on column 6 and the 2 lit buttons on column 7

These are for configuring I2C followers, certain other modules Ansible can send gate and pitch messages to using digital communication rather than patch cables. This functionality is described here but this should probably be mentioned somewhere in docs about the preset pages. The way the possible followers correspond to grid keys is described in this post, I will try to update the documentation soon.

It does not have any (intended) functionality and is going to be removed, the ability to view the probability mod page from the scales page is just a longstanding bug that luckily doesn’t crash the app as far as I know.

I’m the happy owner of a norns + grid, and I am thinking about getting into modular. I am wondering how to combine norns with a modular setup? Is it possible to use Norns’ midi capabilities, or is something more complicated required? I think crow has something to do with modular, but I am not sure I get it…

Welcome!

Crow and Norns are a match made in music-technology heaven. Indeed, I understand Crow was conceived to be Norns’s best friend in the modular realm. Many Norns scripts feature built-in Crow output: just run the USB cable that comes with Crow from any Norns USB out into Crow’s USB input, select the desired Crow out functions in the Norns script, and you’re good to go! Norns can also directly communicate with Mannequins Just Friends via Crow by wiring their i2c headers together. This thread gives all the information you would need for such a use case, and then some.

If you have a MIDI-to-CV module, Norns control is easy to implement too. Just run a USB MIDI cable from any Norns USB out into said module, select the desired MIDI out functions in the Norns script, and voici. Again, there are many Norns scripts with built-in MIDI output functionality.

Finally, check out the official documentation for all this, which is rich, clear, and concise.

Hey y’all, I have some monome en route and I was wondering if someone could walk me through some i2c stuff?

Is there any way to connect Teletype and/or Ansible to Norns without crow? Is it worth snagging a 16n faderbank if my only i2c modules are Teletype and Ansible? If my eurorack power supply is a uZeus (with the 3A adapter), will I need an off world type device to use Grid with Ansible?

I realize that some of this stuff is probably covered in official documentation, researching this stuff can be quite daunting. As always I’m sure I’ll have an easier time with instruments in front of me!

If someone is looking for a monome-protégée, I could sure use a mentor

It took me a while but this post from @csboling got me to understand why it is not possible to have Norns plug into TT or Ansible:

It depends what you are after and your priorities building your system
uZeus:
It depends what other modules you have, I had to get the more powerful adapter to run my 7u 104hp case and get to 3A, the default adapter is only 1.5A or 2A i think?

There are a couple DIY projects which translate midi to i2c: Hans and i2c2midi. As far as grid with uzeus, you should be fine with Ansible i think — the older trilogy modules used the 5v rail which is pretty limited on uzeus, but it looks like ansible uses only +/-12v. I would suggest adding up your maximum power consumption for the modules you have running off the uzeus and making sure it doesn’t exceed more than ~80% of the uzeus specs. This is advice someone gave to me before and I’ve never had problems with noise or running out of power with the uzeus so it seems like good enough advice to pass along

This has been some helpful stuff! I am slowly starting to piece things together and it looks like I will probably want to invest in crow at some point!

I briefly had TT a year or two ago, I worked through the studies and made a couple cool scenes, but ultimately I felt like I didn’t have the time for it. Since then, some more cool resources have come out, I’ve fixed the ergonomic issues I had with my euro setup before.

Looking forward to diving deep! I’m gonna start working on my thesis for the discord next week

Hello, you helpful people of Lines.
I have a question that Ive tried searching for but can’t find info on.

I’m planning a very small ER301 system. I love the idea of Teletype, and the creativity of operating within its constraints - my code skills are very rusty and simple anyway, so I think it will suit me.

I also want to think about adding Crow. I have Norns, so it might be nice to communicate with the 301, and I’ve been using Max for many years, so controlling it via Max/Crow is also very appealing.

My question is whether I really need both.

I was thinking of starting with Crow and writing very simple scripts.

I don’t know if anyone can answer the question for me - it’s up to me to figure out.

It would be lovely to get perspectives, though.

I have all three modules, although im fairly new to crow. All things equal, I’d start with teletype and 301. It seems more robust, you don’t need a computer, you can have multiple scripts on the module at the same time, you can attach a grid, the user base is larger…

After diving into the documentation provided by @keinexco (thanks!), I decided to get Crow. While I wait in stampeding anticipation, I’d like to get to know certain scripts combining Norns, Grid and Crow. Does anyone have suggestions about this? I know about this list, but I’m wondering more about some of people’s specific favorites and tips.

Also, Just Friends seems like a great addition to this team, but it seems utterly impossible to find these days. Any ideas where they can be found?

Hoping for some guidance please;

I have just acquired a Digitakt and want to get midi communication going with my Eurorack system, I have Teletype, Ansible, Crow and Sweet Sixteen but no dedicated midi2CV module.

How should I go about it? I read Teletype would be the most flexible way to handle Midi, but could Sweet Sixteen handle midi messages and send them to the system via i2c for example?
