how is this possible without a network? you can connect via serial to configure wifi?

btw anybody know where tapes are stored for playback?

you can connect via serial to configure wifi?
Yes, I use usb connection. Sorry for the confusion: ssh won’t be possible since you need wifi in the first place.

Without WIFI, you can connect to norns via USB-UART by connecting the power cable to your computer. On Mac/linux do:

screen /dev/tty.usb(tab) 115200

Where (tab) appears hit TAB to autocomplete the serial number. Login is the same as above.

note: updated top instructions for doing update using serial connection which will let you update without the network dropout which is super confusing.

almost ready with new update.

@tehn

data_dir now returns nil for me following the latest update. Did it get renamed or is it being abandoned as a global variable?

home_dir too

Could not find where those globals were documented (on a quick search last night).

There are new ones

_path.home = home
_path.dust = home..'/dust/'
_path.audio = home..'/audio/'

apologies we are this moment trying to resolve the folder reorganization conundrum.

Nice going, @Tyler. Are the updates for the 03 or 14 version of v2 file structure?

Edit: Disregard. I see they are for the 14 file structure.

2nd edit: BTW: thanks for taking the time to structure and comment the code. :ok_hand:

They’re updated for the latest version (see the include)! Thanks!

I know we’ve mentioned a package manager at one point or another, and I didn’t get the impression it was the most popular idea, but at my place of work we have a micro service architecture.

A super easy way of walking in on Monday and making sure we’re up today with all the services is the npm package Meta

Essentially you just provide it with configs that tell meta where all the repos are and it pulls all the latest and greatest (including branches in progress).

ie: meta git pull from the ~/dust/scripts should pull any changes from all the scripts.

Just food for thought!

Had a strange encounter with the serial console. macos high Sierra, the “old beta” release tarball. I couldn’t type into the console at the baud rate specified. Looks like my shell is dumping keystrokes as non-ascii binary data

That happens sometimes for me as well on Linux, restarting norns makes the problem go away.

just wanted to report that latest image fixed the cm3+ issue. after running reset item in the norns menu I could also connect to wifi again. git pull on both repos and I’m up and running again :+1:

thanks!

I’ve been playing around with different sound engines for the Strum script.

Both Passersby and PolyPerc produce regular distortion, even at medium to low output levels. Using the default params. With or without reverb.

I get similar and consistent results on 2 different norns, running v2_030319.

i’ll take a look with some sinewaves from SC -> crone -> DAC. haven’t noticed anything like this before

Serial tty is reproducibly broken on multiple host systems. Both are macos. My second try this evening shows Getty crashing on the serial console.

System unit serial-getty@ttyAMA0.service logs no errors.

I’ve tried connecting at three different baud rates with two different serial applications. I’m putting this one aside until I hear otherwise. Lemme know if it would be helpful to try and debug the getty configuration.

Looking at the title of your terminal leads me to believe you might be using a funky baud rate. The terminal says 112500 while I believe the baud rate is 115200 (looks like you have the 52 transposed).

I was just doing a bunch of work tonight on macOS (using cu) over the serial port w/o issue at 115200 baud.

@carvingcode i’m not sure what description of “distortion” i should be looking for. limited time r/n, travelling with slow internet, and haven’t tried passerby, but polyperc, sine wave, ADC/monitor all look good (no significant harmonic distortion from supercollider to DAC / ADC to DAC. for the former i used s.record in sclang and compared that to Tape output. for latter i just split a sinewave to norns and to a computer. my metric is THD of processed / THD of original - i’m not seeing anything >2db which is like measurement error.)

NB polyperc isn’t sinewaves, its variable-duty squares with a ladder filter.

if by “distortion” you mean “a sound i don’t like or wasn’t expecting” then you’ll have to be more specific or give me a sample or something. like i just got a bunch of dumb sounds from my cellphone as a typed this, b/c my cellphone is acting as a hotspot between laptop+norns and blasting radio waves into the audio chain and there is a creaky JC-120 on the other end of it.

Sorry. Operator malfunction. I had bumped up channel gain on my mixer awhile back for another project. Lowering that to normal range cleared everything up.

Peace.
