I connect usb between computer and norns, fire up cyberduck, click open connection, enter we for username , sleep for password, then think what do i put in server field ? my computers ip?. If i dont enter anything here and try to connect i get an indefinite beach ball

If you can turn on WiFi on the norns, it will show you the IP address. That is the server address. “we” is the username. “sleep” is the password.

If you can’t get WiFi you should contact info@monome.org.

Nope. SFTP won’t work over the usb serial connection.

We need to find you some command line fu to copy the update file.

It might be easier to copy to an external usb thumb drive and cp off of that to the upload dir?

edit 1: instructions

Somehow all is good (im not sure how i did it) - for some reason computer was just hanging trying to connect over serial, i managed to transfer and update, running 190320 now so hopefully all good (and wifi too)

this does not work for me.

require `ish/lib/thing` does work with this folder structure.

augh you are correct. my example was a typo.

Hey Jonnymon,
For future reference here is how I connect via serial on the PC using PuTTY - I don’t believe that you can make a serial connection on Cyberduck.

  • edit I assumed that you were on a PC but rereading your posts, you may be on a Mac - sorry for the noise if that is the case

When you connect Norns via the USB mini power cable to the PC, you can go into your Device Manager window (windows key + type device manager) and under the Ports (COM & LPT) twirl-down and see the Serial Port number that Norns is located on ( mine is on COM17 but you may have a different port number). Norns will not be named but will show up as a USP Serial Port (COM number).
image
Once you know the port number, open a new PuTTY session, set the connection type to Serial and change the Serial line to the COM number from the device manager (My Speed is set at 9600 - not sure if this value can change but seems to work great as is).
image
Once you open the Serial connection, you will see a terminal window that is blank - hit Tab a few times (3 in my case) until you are greeted with a prompt for the norns login: we Passwork:sleep
this should have you connected to norns via Serial.

simply follow the directions that are provided at the top of the thread and you should be all set. Hope this helps - I was a bit lost trying to connect on my first few attempts.

Thanks for this, usefully info anyway - all okay now

Ah great, OK. So the main script was in

dust/code/boingg.lua

and the softcut script was in the same folder. My code was

require "looper1.lua"

which did not work, but

require "boingg/looper1.lua"

did work. Thank you. Sorry, I’m sure that should have been obvious.

As an add on to this - is it possible that norns keeps a cache of softcut scripts so that changes to them don’t immediately take effect, but require a reset?

trying to move the update file to norns via serial tty since my wifi broke

will report back back if it works

Never ma’aged to get wifi working so curious how that works out

I have updated to 2.0 beta (190320) on Raspberry Pi 3B+.

The update broke my installation, I suspect it was something to do with the Kernel update. I rebuilt from scratch (and commenting out the kernel when updating) using the BlokasLabs Patchbox image.

Everything seems to be performing really well. On 1.0 I had a lot of clicks and pops whilst recording to tape but I just put it through it’s paces with EarthSea and it didn’t show any signs of slowing.

Thanks for all your hard work @tehn

i’m using the cp command to copy from my mac to norns…

source makes sense

currently trying to find the correct folder extension for the destination

then it should be easy to follow steps provided above

I’ve just tried to use an external usb drive. Might be useful for your situation without ssh/wifi.

  1. copy norns190320.tgz to usb thumb drive on computer (drag & drop)
  2. insert usb drive into norns and ‘screen’ into norns.
  3. cp /media/usb/norns190320.tgz ~/update
(the usb dir in media might be different)
  4. run the update instructions in OP (step 9 Norns 2.0 beta)

yeah that would be easiest method

but i dont have a thumb drive handy & am willing to try teaching myself this since it hasnt been posted yet

gave up for now
will tackle again tonight at some point but i thought this should work:
cp ~/downloads/norns190320.tgz /home/we/update

i thought it should work but the path is wrong

cp can only copy files between locations on the same computer. Your ~/downloads/ path is on a mac and your /home/we/ path is on a norns. cp in this case only knows about ~/downloads/ and has no way of seeing /home/we.

You’ll need to use a thumb drive or a network connection+SFTP.

But if you are super determined, you could try this (I do not recommend it, just sharing for completeness):

lrzsz, kermit, etc are other ideas for file transfer over serial. you’re back in ‘modem’ land now…

I just wanted to say that, as a simple user, I have found no faults yet in the latest beta, and I really want to thank all the developers for this awesome work. :raised_hands:
