Yeah, there’s nothing on a CM when it comes out of the factory so no way to run it
The only way to get an OS on it is via rpiboot and an image.
So yeah, you’ll have to wait for the image. I assume @tehn will upload it soon.

Alternatively if you’re feeling adventurous you could start with the 190314 beta image and update from there.

Hopefully my CM3+ will arrive shortly. Couple of questions:-
a) Is there a Windows (10) equivalent of https://github.com/monome/norns/wiki/img-flash-macos - in which case I’ll use that
b) But I do have an old MacBook with Mavericks that I can dig out - would that work - or just too old now?
This machine according to the blurb will take Yosemite / El Capitan but no later if that helps.

see the official docs:

I’m attempting the CM3+ install right now.

Module is installed and Norns is in Disk Mode (light on the back is lit up white when in Disk Mode).

I ran the RPI Boot commands and my terminal screen says “Waiting for BCM2835/6/7”

But when I plug the Norns into my computer nothing seems to be happening.

Any thoughts?

Are you using macOS, Windows, Linux? Are you using a prebuilt copy of rpiboot or did you compile it yourself?

I’ve found the process to occasionally be flakey on macOS. I’d recommend disconnecting norns + USB cable from your computer, killing rpiboot, double checking that the switch is all the way over in disk mode, and then:

  1. run rpiboot (norns disconnected)
  2. plug the USB cable into norns, then into your computer (trying a different USB port than you previously used)
  3. cross fingers

Some times it works for me the first time, other times I have to try 2-3 times. Eventually rpiboot will spit out something like the following:

Waiting for BCM2835/6/7
Sending bootcode.bin
Successful read 4 bytes
Waiting for BCM2835/6/7
Second stage boot server
File read: start.elf
Second stage boot server done

(As seen in macOS instructions linked in the top post).

UPDATE: I should add that I have found the latest version of rpiboot (compiled from source) fairly reliable with macOS Mojave

hmmmm… I’ve tried it 4 times now, in 3 different USB ports on my computer (2x with a usb A to USB c cable, twice with a USB A - A cable from my teletype into an A to C adapter).

Nothing seems to be popping up on my terminal window after the “Waiting for BCM2835/6/7” message.

Also should note I’m running macOS Mojave.

Also removed and reinserted the CM3+ just to make sure it wasn’t loose.

Just to confirm are you using the supplied mini-USB to USB-A cable which came with your norns and connecting the mini-USB “power input” to your computer?

The full size USB-A ports on the back of the norns are connected to an internal USB hub chip so they can’t be used to flash the CM3, only the USB “power input” jack is connected directly to the CM3/CM3+

To confirm, using the 2.0 image file, one need do nothing extra to access the full 32gb disk on CM3+?
Thanks for the great work!

only extra thing is “tar xzf norns190405.tgz” to expand the tgz into an img before you install. otherwise, the “thorough” instructions worked perfectly for my ignorant self.

You’ll still need to ssh in to norns and run sudo raspi-config then follow the on screen prompts to expand your disk.

Your old MacBook is not going to do the trick. Got to be Mohave

has anyone successfully flashed with the new image? CM3 and/or CM3+?

Did it an hour ago on a CM3+ using Mac. Went great. Expanded the disc with ssh. Went great. No challenges to report. Thanks!

am i missing out if i upgraded on a CM3+ with the 190405 release from the initial beta that supported CM3+?

not quite sure if it’s beneficial for me to flash using the new image or not.

image @zfigz that was exactly how I did it. It works awesome so far.

@altoaiello I’d like to add that I did all this from OS X 10.13 high Sierra. It was advised against, but I did it anyways.

ok thanks for that - that’ll save me much trouble. It’s the windows route.

Yes, worked fine, I was a bit stumped about a few missing steps in the info but Google and the nice people here helped… I had to install wget first, also decompressing the image file and lastly how to expand the image (I was missing the “how” as in the need to ssh into norns :P)
