Norns.community

I need to add my sines script to this

@ngwese added the possibility to access the doc of a script (its norns.community page) from the maiden repo browser.

It appears as a clickable book icon near tags.

For example with wrms:

The script contribution instructions have been updated to reflect this change (amongst others).

All scripts currently declared on norns.community got this link added to them.

First hours within Norns, no need to express my love and feeling of being lost…
I would like to ask a few questions and I’m sure there will be more to come, where do you suggest me to post them?
I’m totally a beginner

hi luca! welcome

depending on the nature of the question:

hope this feels actionable! let me know if you have any other q’s about q’s

Hi Luca - I’m new to the Norns as well. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by options and choices! I’m keeping a “diary” of what I discover so that I can refer back to it when I need to. That means I can keep a note of which scripts I want to investigate, how I think I might use them, and also what the key / encoders seem to be doing… I’m discovering something new each time I use it. For example, today I discovered that if you’re running a script and you press the K1 button then rotate E1 encoder you’ll get to a “Parameters” page, which not only gives you parameters for the Norns as a whole (Reverb etc.) but if you scroll down through the parameters using E2 you’ll get to parameters FOR THE SCRIPT. A big AHA! moment… I feel many more “AHA!” moments coming…

…and of course, all of this is covered in the first few pages of the official norns docs…

a few updates for us:

  • @eigen has spearheaded an initiative to capture all known norns scripts. it has been a ton of work to hunt everything down and work with the all the script authors so HUGE SHOUTOUT to you!!!
  • we also have a few new categories including mods and eduscripts
  • there is an educational section featuring articles and a lib/engines
  • @dan_derks got our norns tutoring program off the ground
  • finaly, YAR!!!

i’m most happy to see elements of the ecosystem like mods, libs, and engines get properly catalogued

having majority of the scripts in one place is great too but the others have a tendency to slip thru the cracks without a dedicated lines thread in Library

this will help showcase the amazing work created for norns :cowboy_hat_face:

Seems to be working again now for me!

As a recent comer to norns, I can’t imagine what it would have been like before norns.community. A big thanks to all involved. However I still feel quite lost looking through the big list of scripts.

I’d love a way to quickly find the “best” ones. Of course that’s very subjective, but I wonder if some kind of popularity metric could be derived from each script’s associated lines thread. Sorting the Library category by replies or views yields a somewhat useful list of top scripts, but it’s a very crude metric. I’m not a data scientist but perhaps something like “number of unique users posting to a thread + views / time” would permit hot new scripts to rise to the top.

Alternatively the existing bookmark button could be fixed (it’s broken for everyone, right?) and then “number of times bookmarked” could be used as a proxy for popularity, like GitHub stars.

Would there be any interest in adding something like this to norns.community?

I think the issue here is that this would make lesser know scripts even more unknown, since they would be pushed to the bottom of these kinds of lists. Lots of gems could be ignored that way.
In fact, some of my absolute favourite scripts are ones people are generally pretty quiet about. You’ve just got to put a bit of time into exploring and playing with random script, or searching norns community for musical concepts you find interesting.

i don’t think the concept of “best” works here. all of the scripts are the best at being what they are :person_shrugging:

Totally, I feel like any kind of ranking of scripts misses the point of norns a bit!

Though @Tamlyn you might find the favouriting feature in norns itself useful to narrow down a long just to a few you can focus on. Scripts drop in and out of favourites on my own norns quite often.

Maybe we need a “My current favourite Norns script” thread here, in the same way we have the “What are you listening to?” thread. Perhaps with a few words on why the poster likes that particular script.

That would enable a more open-ended roundup, which avoided the risks inherent on ranking scripts.

Just a thought…

I’d like that. And if anyone felt like recording a video demo of their favourite script…

My favourite norns script is Awake, because it makes lovely sounds while being easy to understand.

@Tamlyn - Aw, yeah, Awake is such a lovely script - as you say, it’s easy to understand - and I know how important that is when we’re just starting to take our first, tentative steps in our explorations of the Monome ecosystem. The walkthrough in monome/docs is invaluable, too!

Dronecaster is another perennial favourite, and krill is a recent addition to that endlessly-updated list!

oooooo marked a real breakthrough for me, and I still use it quite often.

Anyway, I’ve made the “My current favourite Norns script” thread here and will look forward to seeing what other travellers come up with!

i often point new users and friends who get norns to this list

have you tried all of em? (orca, timeparty, mlr, quence, compass, otis, animator, wrms, and cheat codes)
