Thanks, that worked and norns.el now loads on Emacs on the device. The (encode-time) indeed was the issue, that same ELisp statement works fine on my Emacs on Android under Termux. Strange!

With sequins and lattice and on-device Emacs and MIDI cc this is a bunch of fun.

Riser note stuck on Digitone since yesterday, everything else is sequins+lattice driving OP-Z as a sampler with tight looping envelopes as a kind of a wavetable synth.

small update worth noting: now support for jacking in a running dockerized norns w/ new commands norns-docker-maiden-repl & norns-docker-sc-repl.

please note that for now it only works when docker is colocalized w/ Emacs (both instance run on the same host). it requires additional dependency docker-tramp.

(PS: i just pushed so should take an hour or two for MELPA to catch up)

Is this in use for some people maybe? norns-restart works, but other commands give

websocket-open: norns/5555 nodename nor servname provided, or not known

in Emacs. My intent was to wrestle Wobblewobble to give MIDI cc output. I have Emacs running on the desktop, Tramp connection to norns over a WIFI.

this seems to be Mac specific… i’ve only ever tested on Linux & Windows box so can’t easily reproduce.

did it ever work from your Mac?

if so this suggest killing the mDNSResponder process (for it to restart).

when you google the “nodename nor servname provided, or not known” error, you can see it’s a pretty low-level one, bellow the scope of

another possibility would be a non standard mDNS domain (tweakable w/ norns-mdns-domain).

does accessing http://norns.local/ work from your browser? if not, it’s the “local” part that’d need to be tweaked.

you could try using “lan” which is another generally valid value:

Yep that’s the address on the browser as usual, and the file I am looking at in Emacs is also on norns.local via tramp over ssh. I’ll see if using the IP address works, and what’s up with the resolver. Like said norns-restart somehow worked. I’ll figure it out.

norns-restart uses ssh and not websocket, that’s why it’s working and not the other commands.

If my rusty Emacs Lisp is not misleading me, norns--core-curr-host chops the value of norns-mdns-domain from the hostname on line 248 whenever we are editing a remote file.

Also the REPL works just fine.

On my Android wifi hotspot I can get to norns.local just fine from browser, SSH or TRAMP, but there is no such host as norns without the domain. Same behavious whether I run Emacs on macOS or on Android in Termux, and open a file on norns over TRAMP.

I am either not properly configured, or I am missing the rationale for chopping the domain…

Meta: would this be better discussed on GitHub issues?

i may have had a good (albeit platform-specific or network setup-specific) reason to do this suffix removal at this stage, but it’s weird i don’t add it back later when doing the ws connection…

moving the convo to github would be nice esp. to track the rationale associated w/ the changes. can you create any issue w/ a copy pasta of the details?

new release that fixes the domain name issue reported by @xmacex.

also renamed all the references of maiden with matron, as i had the 2 mixed up in my head when i wrote this.

the norns-maiden-* function continue working but are marked as deprecated and will be removed in a future release.

Thanks so much for this excellent package! I wanted to note some hiccups getting going:

I couldn’t use quelpa to install. Granted, I’ve never used it before, but issuing (quelpa '(norns :fetcher git :url "https://github.com/p3r7/norns.el")) failed …
Instead I modified load-path and added the use-package invocation. This failed with Error (use-package): norns/:catch: Cannot open load file: No such file or directory, f … which if you’ve never heard of the f package like me, is pretty cryptic . Point being, manual install requires dep installs, naturally, which are easily located in the norns.el file; once these were installed things proceeded smoothly.
TRAMP is a little frustrating to get going if you’re not a regular user, no thanks to the GNU docs which seem to do everything they can to avoid giving a helpful example. Google to the rescue …

Other than that, it’s been working great so far, loading scripts, issuing maiden repl commands and so on. Regarding issues above, all would be resolved with some details in the README (assuming quelpa problems were mine only), would be happy to assist with this.

it’s in melpa now, no need for quelpa. i thought i removed any mention of quelpa in the doc.

TRAMP makes browsing remote files as if they were local. it’s certainly one of the most powerful abstractions i’ve seen in any dev tool.

oops, that was from the head of this thread which said it wasn’t on melpa so manual or quelpa … the README is fine, my mistake.

It’s fine to find-file from repl and probably faster, but my workflow is usually file-oriented first so I wanted to start there. It’s really not hard once you remember the /ssh:we@norns.local: prefix in find-file. TRAMP is all good.

I have some kind of autologin going on, so for me /ssh:norns is enough when I am editing over TRAMP. I think Emacs picks it up from my ~/.ssh/config file and SSH agent.

one cool trick i use is to bookmark (with command bookmark-set) the current script i’m working on.

i then just list-bookmarks and have a bookmark i can directly go to, w/ TRAMP prefix & all saved.

you can also bookmark folders (when in dired mode).

no but you could define your own custom command that calls the 2 sub-commands sequentially.
