Ok, it does in fact log external to the console, I also tried hard coding a device id midi.connect(1) to no avail… I’ll keep grafting in parts of mark’s midi code and see where I get.

I’ll keep you posted.

if this happens every single external clock event then I think I know the (face palm worthy) fix:

in line 226, try replacing:
clk.on_select_external = function() print("external") end
with
clk.on_select_external = function() iterate() end
and lmk what happens?

expected behavior: maiden stops printing “external” for every external clock and starts iterating less concepts.

What is the path the viewing the Lua module docs on the norns?

it only logs external once, then repeatedly logs midi_event, no change after changing that line.

bleh, thank you for your resilience and help. pulling off into Norns: scripting.

edit: @capsella , I have a theory!
can you try getting a sequence up and running with the internal clock [without the changes we talked about] and then while it’s groovin’, switch the clock source to external and try clocking externally?

@dan_derks tried that last night… the sequencer stops

dang.

well, I did learn that clk:start() and clk:stop() commands affect both internal and external clocking, so I’ll do some more digging. thanks for the patience!

Hello! I have some display issues on my Norns since a while. I charged it several times but the display stays dim and not very visible. Is there a way to check/adjust display settings? I’m still on 18110. Thanks for help!

send an e-mail with photo to info@monome.org

the display may need to be replaced.

just got my norns and i have a dumb question, thought i saw it somewhere cant seem to find it now

Loading samples in manually vs recording them directly. Im guessing its some sort of ssh situation just not sure where to put them and if there is a format they should be in or if they are only compatible with certain apps or if said apps need to be modified to accept files.
thanks

SFTP is probably your best bet to drag and drop. ssh if you know the command line well.

location should probably be somewhere in ~/dust/audio

If I recall correctly - most any audio format should work except for mp3.

Is it ok to clear out the update folder following an update?

yes. typically the update folder should clear itself on update but this doesn’t happen on the beta (if that’s what you’re doing)

Recently have been introduced to the monome community through a YouTube rabbit hole and some of the beautiful Norns demos floating around.

Found it to be full of magic. Just like the octatrack.

I make mostly ambient and experimental “hip hop” stuff. Wondering if Norns could cover some of the same ground an octatrack could.

I’ve owned an octatrack before and I’m pretty familiar with it. I ended up selling it to fund my first modular rig (morphogene/1010bitbox) and miss it quite a bit and will be investing in either a Norns or OT real soon.

I didn’t like the lack of immediacy on the OT and want something that could chop samples pretty quickly. I’m curious if Norns can allow u to chop samples quickly and how precise can it get with start and end points.

I have a digitakt I could use as a midi controller(hopefully) but eventually would like to get grids. Maybe even selling the digitakt.

Drifting more towards Norns because it seems to be pretty intuitive and I love the form factor and portability but am I expecting too much from it if I intend on using it to chop records in the same vein as say a dilla or madlib beat?

i am in a very similar situation to you both musically and gear wise. i make ambient /experimental / hiphop. I also have an ot and a norns.

norns does many things. it can be a sampler / synthesizer / sequencer / drum machine granulator etc. however it can only be one thing at a time so what you do and what you get out of it is up to you at a given moment. most of the scripts ( instruments ) it runs are immediate and fun to use, though i cant say there is anything yet that covers a more traditional mpc / sp sampler yet. new scripts are showing up all the time so maybe soon. i would recommend norns if you wanted to use something unfamiliar and fun that you could quickly get lost in and inspire ideas.

as far as comparing it to the ot, these are two different planets in different dimensions. the ot is designed to do many things, like norns, though unlike nonrs it is also designed to do them at once. this added depth leads to the lack of immediacy you mention. i’ve found that this is often the tradeoff with electronic music instruments. as far as user design is concerned it basically comes down to depth vs immediacy.

to me it sounds like the digitakt is the perfect fit for you no? it’s immediate and you can chop samples quickly and get very precise with your sample editing. seems like you could easily do dilla / madlib eque things ( and more ) on the digitakt. certainly much faster than norns as of now.

just to add, i love the ot. it is my favorite piece of gear. i hear you on the lack of immediacy though i’ve found that with some practice and setting up work templates, it just can’t be beat. especially for the kind of music you and i are interested in. i use norns and the ot together because they both do such different yet complimentary things. i use norns as an instrument in my setup meanwhile the ot is the main sample player / live sampler / sequncer / mixer. digitakt and norns would be a fun combo i’m sure.

i’m rambling here and i could go on forever about this. if you have more specific questions id be happy to help.

Is anyone sending midi from Norns to iOS through USB? If so, how do you do it? I would like to send midi from Norns into apps like Audiobus 3 and FM Player.

I am connecting my iPad to Norns via USB cable (using Lightning to USB 3 Camera adapter) and the iPad is not showing up as a device under Norns. Also, Norns is not showing up in Audiobus 3.

Other midi devices (e.g., midi keyboards, midi fighter twister) are showing up in Norns just fine for me. I am using Norns version 181101.

I’ve been using Norns Kria with all my iPad synths. I patch them together with the Sevilla Soft usb-usb in the middle and it works great.

You have the Host-to-Host issue. Both the iPad and norns are USB “Hosts” and can’t talk directly to each other like between a “Host” (computer) and “Devices” (midi keyboards).

as just mentioned, the Sevilla Soft usb-usb provides a solution to this problem.

Awesome, thanks for the quick diagnosis @Frogstar and @okyeron

Just ordered a Sevilla Soft midi usb-usb
