norns: help

hi all,

i just updated my norns the other day and it suddenly stopped working. first it froze, then it would turn on without displaying anything, and now it turns on with a screen of pixels. the only way to turn it off is with the hard reset. any ideas what i should do?

did you re-flash the base image, and if so, are you sure you got the right one? (not for shield / pi4)

hm ok, i wonder how old the previous image was.

if it was older than 220306, it shouldn’t have run the update without warning about new image, but if it did for some reason it could result in something like that
if it was older than 231114, that’s a relatively big change that seems to occasionally cause problems, which can generally be resolved by re running the update.

otherwise, it seems like a weird one, since it’s factory might be best to just email monome support directly.

Curious as this has been reported on some shields and in this post it seems jack is failing

Maybe there’s something in recent updates where jack is taking too long to start?

hm, thanks for pointing it out…

i don’t think a delay is the problem - jack seems to be not starting at all, and ALSA can’t talk to the codec, so i automatically think of hardware or lower level problem. especially when synchronous with screen glitch.

though, now that i think of it, since userspace screen update (231114), i can imagine screen buffer left in random condition when jack fails. should be at least sporadically reproducable…

but, i don’t know what in recent updates could cause any kind of problem with jack. in case, in that report, 2022 image also exhibited same problem.

i would like to see any norns-matron service output for any of the affected.

i’ll also try and reproduce on cm3 factory.

Ive done extensive testing with multiple releases, I did have some temporary success.

I updated the other thread with some more info and happy to supply and shield based outputs you need in relation to this behaviour. Im starting to think its a codec failure or perhaps the oscillator but when testing with lab power the oscillator seems to be ok.

What is the best way to connect norns to Eurorack? Until now I have used it on its own.

The crow module from monome is the easiest connection from norns to euro. many norns scripts have integrated crow as destination output already

Crow is definitely the best option, yes. You can also use midi to CV modules.

But I was unclear, I meant how to the get the sound from e.g. barcodes into the Eurorack.

Oh! You can use any audio input module. I use an Erica Synths Pico Input, but there are lots of others.

I have a question about crow’s output 4. I’m working on a norns scripts that outputs LFOs out of crow’s outputs. 1-3 operate as expected, but output 4 won’t activate from the init line, but it will activate if I start it from a button press. I’m not sure what is going on. Crow’s clock output is disabled in the Edit > Clock menu.
Here’s a little script that demonstrates the issue. In this script, output 3 works as expected, but 4 won’t start without the button press:

Hi guys ! I’m a totally newbie here after getting myself a shield a week or so ago . So far I’m loving the Norns but I’m wondering - is there a way to save/load states of a certain script ? For instance - every time I open awake , it reverts to the initial melody and settings and I’d love to be able to write pieces that I can then recall from files .
Also - is there a play / pause for scripts ? I’ve also been enjoying the l_ll_ll script but would like to record it starting from silence ?

Hi @Obbdat, congratulations on your new Norns and welcome to the community!

I moved your post to this thread, which is where we tend to keep Norns help questions.

On your first Q, you’re gonna want to check out the parameters bit of the docs, and specifically the section on saving parameter sets - that should get you the save/load functionality you’re looking for (though I don’t know off the top of my head if awake saves specific melodies).

On the second Q, different scripts are different. Some have play/pause and some don’t. You can always use the levels menu to get silence, and then increase the volume when you’re ready to begin recording.

Once you’re feeling more confident, any script can be edited locally - so if your favourite script doesn’t have play/pause functionality then you could add it yourself. The script author might even be interested in including your work in a future version of the script.

I have a question to which I found it difficult to find an answer on the monome site.

I have norns(shield), crow and W/, the latter two are connected by i2c wires. I had the impression that it is possible to control Crow via Maiden trough norns, but I did not seem to get it to work. I had Crow connected to Norns with a working cable (checked with Druid on my other computer), but e.g.
crow.output[1].volts = 3

(written at the REPL command line in Maiden) did not do anything. What am I doing wrong? It just said [ok], just like when I wrote crow.reset()

I would prefer to operate crow through norns, because then my pc doesn’t have to be so close to the rack. An additional question is how I would then load scripts to crow, instead of to norns.

I’m not sure if/how you can load a script to Crow without druid. But maybe we will both learn something new today!

That certainly should work, that’s the way to use crow via norns (well, one of the ways). Maybe it is worth checking that you are not currently running a norns scripts, which uses crow too? The script would compete with what you write in the REPL.

Norns has I believe undocumented function norns.crow.loadscript(SCRIPT_FILE) to run (or upload, I’m not sure. The difference is that the uploaded script runs on crow powerup, ran not) a crow script onto the device.

There is also bowering, a norns script which can be used to load druid scripts into crow.
