I recall having to turn the global effects off when I first started using Norns. It could be set to ON as a default and that could be giving you some trouble.

Tried this. I do have the effects off, return levels down, anything that I can think could contribute to a noise issue. Thanks.

Does that mean if I connect a usb-ethernet adapter to norns, plug the ethernet cable into my computer, set my computer to use ethernet as network connection, that I can run norns’s maiden on my computer?

use maiden or cyberduck to delete data/tehn/mlr.pset (or /home/we/dust/data/tehn/mlr.pset)

you may have “speed mod” saved to non-0

you might be a bit on your own for network setup if you’re on windows. but for Mac what i’d do is usb-ethernet to between each (you’d need two dongles) and the internet-share to the mac’s wifi to the ethernet port which will assign DHCP. you’ll still need to screen into the norns with usb-serial to figure out the IP address. but then yes, maiden will work.

I had mentioned (in the other thread I think?) that my Wifi nub only seems to work in the USB port closest to the audio jacks. It turns out the same is true for a USB drive. Grid seems to work in any of the USB ports.

@tehn any ideas? I’m going to run the latest firmware update now, if it fixes it I’ll report back.

latest firmware shouldn’t change anything. this is a confusing issue— i’ll have to look at the driver for the internal usb hub.

Ok, thanks. Feel free to DM me if you want me to check anything or test anything.

This morning everything was magically ok. This probably speaks to why a couple others couldn’t recall ‘exactly’ what they had done to fix this.
I pulled my power cable last night, hoping that maybe that might aid to a more complete power down cycle or reboot… IDK honestly but signal is good now. FWIW when the signal went distorted was after me leaving the unit on for probably around 24 hours just playing awake, I had got called away from my home studio and hadn’t gone back and upon return it sounded like that. The sound persisted in all apps though.
Thanks for the help and another amazing device.

can i use usb a-a cable if i’d like to send midi cc from laptop or other controller to norns?

a midi controller you can connect, since its a usb device. (or at least should be, though it should normally have usb b, or one of the mini usb … not usb a)

you cannot connect a laptop . since both the norns and laptop are usb hosts.

on the Organelle (similar issue, its a usb host) we found a really cool (and cheap) dongle, usb host to host converter, which works brilliantly
http://compasflamenco.com/midi-c-3/midi-usbusb-p-4.html

apart from that you could go to your computer via midi din (with converters), and I think iConnect also allow more than one usb host. (but not sure, as I dont have one!)

there are some midi over wifi solutions too, but they are a bit of a pain to setup, this is where OSC comes into its own.

thanks for the link. been scratching my head today how I’m going to sync mlr to my pc. tried the usb a to a and also going via an old midi keyboard neither worked. I don’t currently have a midi interface for my computer. I was wondering what solutions others were using.

Can confirm using iConnectMidi4+ works (and I’ll assume the other versions like Mio and Midi2 should also work).

I’ve also used an older version of this UM-1 midi>usb adapter and it worked great.

I’ve only tried sending clock FROM playfair however and have plans to sync to a standalone elektron box later tonight if I can get home early enough. Happy to report back.

…if people purchase the Roland UM-ONE I highly recommend making sure that it is the “mkII” version which can operate as a standard USB Device Class MIDI interface which makes it compatible with ansible and earthsea as well.

yeah i have some small midi box somewhere in my desk
we’ll see if any combo of cables and ports work well for my idea

I received my norns yesterday. It is a thing of great beauty. Thanks all.

Just a question: does anyone else find the rotary knobs a bit oversensitive when navigating the menus? I find I repeatedly overshoot the item I’m aiming for, and it takes a few tries to zero in on it.

I’m asking because, before I try tweaking the code, I wanted to rule out that this might be a hardware issue on my side.

I have definitely had this thought

Having an issue with my Qunexus, notes get stuck in Earthsea and I’m able to only play one or two before it stops responding.

Is there a way to set/fix the date/time on Norns? I have noticed that while recording to tape the date and time is off in the naming of the files.

Unfortunately there isn’t a complete solution to this. The short version is to turn on WiFi first…

The norns hardware does not have an internal clock like a standard computer does so as soon as it is powered off its sense of time stops and it has no way of knowing how long it has been powered off for. Power it back on and the clock picks up where it last was.

One of the side effects of connecting the device via WiFi to your router is that it will attempt to sync its internal clock with time sources out on the internet. Annoyingly it turns out that supercollider freaks out when it sees the time change drastically and that is why you may have seen reports of norns locking up when the WiFi is turned on. There is ongoing work to try and address the issue (the details are in github issues).
