Tip for managing the v2 SELECT menu:

If you’re finding the new one-level SELECT menu a bit long to scroll through, you can reduce it by removing some items from the code/we folder on norns. Example: I copied everything except the lib folder off to my computer, leaving the lib folder inside we on norns. Reduced the length by about 12 items.

Wanted to ask this helpful community for some advice…Been pouring over all of the NORNS documentation, walkthroughs, videos etc. Ive seen. I have been blown away by what its capable of and what people have done with it.

My question is this: considering the factors below, will it be totally above my head?

  1. I dont own a monome grid or arc (which seem to be necessary for most but not all of the norns patches/scripts)

  2. I know ZERO about programming. I tried to follow along with the basic walkthroughs and was just totally lost.

So, considering these 2 factors, I’d basically be using norns with MIDI controllers and only be able to run scripts that others have programmed…Is NORNS not for me?

Are there one or two scripts that you see yourself using a lot as is? I have a norns but no grid or arc, but I do program. So I tend to have a lot of ideas of things I want to make. I’d say if there are a few scripts that you really see yourself using extensively then I’d say it’d be worth it and who knows, you might gradually start to wrap your head around the scripting.

i’m trying to fix my script for the new midi syntax and i’ve hit a weird wall.

to connect my midi keyboard i have this in init (which i lifted directly from Molly):

midi_in_device = midi.connect(1)
midi_in_device.event = midi_event

this does not work. but when i go into the paramater menu for setting midi devices (also lifted) and set it to 2 and then back to 1 it reliably works as expected. here’s that code:

params:add{type = "option", id = "output", name = "Output", options = options.OUTPUT, action = all_notes_kill}

following closely as i have the exact same question as gnome666. i love what people have done with norns and am trying to decide whether it would be worth it for me or not. i also have a digitakt, so could pair it with that via midi. i just have a hard time seeing myself purchasing a norns and then turning around and buying a grids. by no means a criticism of what monome have created, it just takes me forever to save up that amount of money due to other financial obligations at this point in my life. :upside_down_face:

mlr looks great, as do many of the other grid heavy scripts. unfortunately for me I’m heading into this from a eurorack control voltage background. I’m pretty clueless when it comes to midi too…

I don’t mind putting in the time to learn all this new stuff, but, i fear it may be a bit too much for me to chew…

A norns and grid is enough to start, there are currently very few (maybe actually 3) arc scripts, so that’s not important. It is my opinion that the grid is essential.
Without that, you could use some scripts, but it wouldn’t be as fun. Not even close.

What I definitely wouldn’t do is spend $800 to find out if you like programming or not with no prior experience. I have a computer science degree and I hate it, so maybe you’d still be smarter than me if you were only out the $800, not like my $100k. :slight_smile:

Coding is very hard at first. It takes a very long time to get good at. But- for a select few, they excel at it. Maybe start looking at max/msp tutorials and see if they inspire you… or a book like this…

Thanks for the response everyone. sadly for me, I’ve watched the Norns studies, a bunch of Grids studies/walkthroughs on youtube/vimeo, and previously tried to wrap my head around Teletype/Just Type by doing the same. Unfortunately, despite repeat viewings, and my strong desire to understand, my eyes mostly glaze over and my brain starts hurting :slight_smile:

All that is to say I have much more respect for those of you in the community that do grasp this stuff and appreciate the creativity, work, and sounds you all make…

As for me, I’ll sadly just admire from afar, but listen up close :love_you_gesture:

While trying to get the hang of maiden I managed to delete the audio folder.I thought i was deleting an annoying blank file i had created but it deleted the whole folder. Whats the best way to get it back? can i just redo the whole update?
Whats the best way to add back in my folders of samples- the sync to usb method doesnt seem to be an option any more?

use SFTP. there’s a guide in the main norns docs. it’s just like a file manager, you can create the audio folder and copy whatever files you want in there. be sure to create a “tape” folder inside of the “audio” folder if you use the TAPE REC function.

it’s pretty minor, i wouldn’t worry about re-running the update, which is much more complicated (via serial).

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but is there something like a list of the currently available Arc scripts for Norns 2.0?

I just explored Arc Levels on Ansible and really like it, but working with the buttons 1/2 on Ansible is so fiddly, especially when there are cables plugged into the jacks right underneath. Having this script on Norns with proper controls (buttons) alone would be a reason to switch to Norns.

Thanks @tehn, did that. i got it to work. was a bit nervous of doing it as i really didnt get the maiden editor thing. I had to install toilet duck but managed to move the archived audio in v1 up into dust proper.

arc support was just added to norns, so there aren’t many scripts yet. but check out angl and mangl

Hello! This is all very amazing. Thank you to everyone who contributed, for your dedication and for helping to create these brilliant instruments/tools of joy. They have been quite intuitive and fun to play with! Wondering if someone can please help me to get Meadowphysics working with the current 2.0 release? I suppose that I had it partially working yesterday, after struggling with where to place everything. I created a couple of folders along the way using Cyberduck… but it seems to have caused an audio related issue. Norns went silent.

To clarify; I never had audio working with Meadowphysics, and this was the first time that I’d attempted. I checked the parameters page of Meadowphysics to be sure that audio was enabled. Still nothing, so I proceeded to try Awake and a few other scripts… I noticed that I no longer had audio output no matter what I tried, reset, sleep, panic. So, again… I manually installed the latest available 2.0 (using MacOS Mojave’s terminal), and now I have audio again and things seem Normal.

Not quite sure what I am doing yet, but I would love to try Meadowphysics out! First post. :smiley:

stupid noob question but is it possible and/or how do you save a preset? I found moly and the west coast synth rather nice but can’t seem to be able to save any presets
