It’s just really odd, because when I look at the audio page that shows your incoming (and outgoing) levels, nothing is showing up as clipping there.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the compressor changing the levels. Is that engaged?

both compressor and reverb are turned off. I thought of that too, but alas, not the issue. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yup, have had to reboot this morning actually, while using the newest firmware.

have people been experiencing this with various scripts and engines? or is it mostly mlr?

i’ll take closer look at all levels in softcut paths.

i’ve experienced the reported bad aliasing / clipping at input, very sporadic, reboot solves, level independent : seems like soundcard init gremlin. v hard for me to debug this since i’ve only produced it once in thousands of powercycles.

this other thing reported i haven’t experienced: bad distortion but not on all mix paths, introduced after update. seems like something else. if it’s a bug in crone sources i should be able to track down.

if signal from monitor is clean, and signal from tape/softcut isn’t, that rules out issue with soundcard as well as with the jack connection. (because all those busses are calculated and mixed in the same jack client.)

one question: is the distortion in the TAPE file, or just when playing it back on norns?

I’ve had it with reels, cranes, otis and compass. These are all softcut based right?

Edit: Sorry, I should also be more specific. In all of the instances I’ve had the last week or two, its been while monitoring through norns without recording audio into a script or playing it back. Usually it happens immediately after powering on. So I’m not exactly what part of norns this is using (total noob here), but maybe this helps? If you’d like more specifics on my setup, or if possible I will document via video if/when it happens again.

I’ll move a known distorted file and check later- can only confirm that it happens when playing back on norns

Edit: to clarify possible confusion, unwanted distortion is heard when playing back TAPE files on norns. sounds fine when monitoring

Edit 2: nevermind, I guess I was just clipping. thought I was more mindful of monitoring (visual indicator) than this…

Sorry to derail the current subject but I am having a problem with the norns currently- yesterday everything was fine and today I turned it on and none of the scripts work. I’m getting a message on the home screen that says “error: duplicate scripts” and each time I try and load a script it says “loading…”. Can anyone help with this?

Can’t remember for sure since I wasnt “using” a script - just recording external signal - but it wasn’t mlr. I’ll try to replicate with something like Timber (no softcut)

can confirm this …

The file themselves are clipped. I exported them to my PC and opened them in audacity.

Today as I am playing with MLR, my input sounds clean, and signal from monitor is clean. If I look at levels as I record an input, I am not even hitting half max volume. Still, the playback from softcut noticeably degrades in quality and clips.

edit: I should also add that when I record the loops in MLR to tape, even though they are sounding clean, the resulting wav file on playback then has the extreme clipping.

ok thanks. so this is definitely about clipping and not about some really extreme distortion that sounds like bad resampling?

one thing to note is that the input level meters are linear. if L and R inputs are near/above 50%, and some script tells softcut to sum L+R to a single voice (as many do) and then split that voice to L,R outputs, then that will clip.

i’ll make the metering more standard (dbFS scale) and see what else i can do to limit levels within the routes.

augh, thank you for reviving the meters issue. they are quite bad right now and it slipped off my list.

probably best if i just do dbFS conversion on crone side with LUT.

This is lovely. My norns stopped responding to my wifi (I think it’s something with my router because some other devices on my network were acting funny this morning) but I might actually prefer the CLI to the web interface. My only question at the moment is, can I connect to SC in a similar way to matron?

Hi, I am keen to do a fresh install of norns. I made the mistake of installing library but everything went to pieces at that point,.

I would like to install scripts manually , what is the best way to do this. How are 'most 'people working with their norns?

I find it easiest to ssh into norns, navigate to dust/code, and use git to clone the script.

Ive never used git - always felt its for code developers
