Norns: maiden

I have recently been having an issue with Maiden. I have both a Norns and a Norns shield. Recently I cannot see new scripts in Maiden even after refreshing, both get hung at the checking for update screen. They both work fine otherwise so I assume it is a Maiden/connection thing. It shows that both norns are connected to my wifi fine, but Maiden itself says not connected to Matron. Any help would be appreciated.

The Norns: maiden thread is probably the best place for info outside of the docs.

A few questions to start:

  • Are both devices; factory and shield, exhibiting the same behavior?
  • It sounds like both are connected to your wifi network (good) and not acting as a hotspot (downloads normally won’t work in hotspot mode), correct?

If the maiden web app comes up but the matron repl stays disconnected then that is likely an indication that one of the programs on the device died. Within the matron repl will it connect after running the ;restart command?

Given the symptoms described my only immediate guess is that both devices have run out of disk space (which can cause all kinds of weird behavior). On the device, go to the top level menu with SELECT / SYSTEM / SLEEP and press K2 to show extra detail - how much available space it reported on the disk line?

It is possible to run the devices out of space with long tape recordings or by downloading some of the scripts which include/install large sample libraries. If your devices are out of space consider using maiden to delete content you don’t strictly need like old tape recordings or scripts with sample libraries. You can copy data off your device using one of the methods documented here.

The original factory norns hardware with a CM3 processor has 4GB of storage total of which about 2.5GB was usable. With the shields or upgraded norns with a CM3+ can have more space to work with.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes both devices exhibit the same behavior. Both are connected to my wifi.

Both devices should have plenty of space. On shield it reads 27262M. On norns it is 22795M

This is a recent problem with Maiden. It was seemingly working about 2 weeks ago.

; restart doesn’t seem to do anything at all.

Thanks for the additional info. Looks like more debugging is in order. If issuing the ;restart command in maiden doesn’t cause the display on norns (either device) to go black and display the startup sparkle/firecracker animation then that is an indication that the wifi connection might not actually be working.

Which version of the norns software is installed? (It should be displayed in the lower right of the screen in the same detail view used to see disk space) The reason to ask is that older versions of maiden would aggressively cache the web app in the browser for quick startup and to minimize load on the device. Recent versions of maiden have removed this explicit caching and let the browser do what it normally would. An older version could still be cached in the browser which is why it initially displays but nothing works.

Can you verify that SYSTEM > WIFI shows that the STATUS of the network connection is activated and that an IP address is shown?

If the network is activated and an IP address is show try accessing maiden with a different browser than the one you’ve been using to see if the behavior is any different.

If the network is active and maiden loads in a different browser do any files appear in the file tree? Do files load into the editor? If a file loads in the editor does play work? (It shouldn’t if the repl isn’t working)

Given that you have two devices - has the hostname on one been changed or are they both called norns.local? If they have the same name please change one of them to have a different host name as described here.

The fact that both devices are behaving the same is starting to sound like it might be something in your environment which changed in the last two weeks. Have any new scripts been installed? Upgrades/changes to the computer you are using? Different wifi network password?

Thanks again for the reply @ngwese . Both Shield and Norns are on 210706. Both show that wifi is activated and an ip address is shown.

I was unable to connect to maiden in a different browser using either norns.local or ip address/maiden/

I haven’t changed my setup at all, but I remembered struggling to find a script in maiden. I was trying to download a new script but it wasn’t showing up in maiden, which led me here.

Both have a different hostname.

Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated. Kind of a bummer since everything technically works, but I can’t download scripts or update.

I’m not sure if this is related but I just updated my Norns Shield to the latest ( 210927) and I can’t seem to be able to connect to Maiden (getting a 404 error).

I checked my wifi setttings and there was some weird duplication of my wifi network so I deleted it all and added the wifi connection again (inputting my password again, etc,) and the Norns seems to be happy with the connection. I checked that my computer also uses the same connection.

But I’m still getting the 404. I restarted the Norns a couple of times to be sure it wasn’t some weird initialization issue.

What else could I have missed ?

The Norns wifi settings say “Status : activated” and the IP address is the same as before (and it’s the one I use to try to access Maiden).

Edit : I also tried with Chrome and Edge, both give me the 404

@oscillateur same thing happened to me after updating this afternoon, but it is working fine now. No more 404.

I updated my “clean” (non-dev) norns earlier today using the same release build as everyone else and things are working as expected (maiden 1.1.4 is running and accessible)

(actually this applies to @Aaah as well)

1. connectivitiy check with ping

Lets confirm visibility between the computer running the browser and the device. If you have a Linux or macOS open a terminal shell and run ping -c 3 norns.local command to confirm basic connectivity (Windows example at the bottom of the post). The output should look something like this and report “0.0% packet loss”

PING norns.local (192.168.220.112): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.220.112: icmp_seq=0 ttl=63 time=1.677 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.220.112: icmp_seq=1 ttl=63 time=1.555 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.220.112: icmp_seq=2 ttl=63 time=1.628 ms

--- norns.local ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 1.555/1.620/1.677/0.050 ms

2. check on device logs

If you are comfortable logging into the device via ssh it would be helpful to see the output of the following commands:

  • systemctl status norns-maiden - a healthy system should show active (running)
● norns-maiden.service
Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/norns-maiden.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled)

3. interpret the results

  • If the ping command reports a high % of packet loss then there is a problem is likely somewhere in the wifi connection.

  • If the systemctl or journalctl commands show problems then it is possible the installation/upgrade might have gone wrong. Next step would be to try and redo the update using the manual process.

windows ping

If you are on Windows then you can run the equivalent ping /n 3 <ip-address-of-your-norns> in Powershell and its output looks like this for a healthy connection (note: I used an IP address because norns.local wouldn’t work in my VM)

ping /n 3 192.168.220.112

Pinging 192.168.220.112 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.220.112: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=63

Reply from 192.168.220.112: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=63

Ping statistics for 192.168.220.112:
    Packets: Sent = 3, Received = 3, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

@ngwese Thanks a lot for the detailed answer.

I’m getting a 2ms ping with no loss from my PC to the Norns Shield.
The ssh connection doesn’t seem to work though :

>ssh we@192.68.0.29
ssh: connect to host 192.68.0.29 port 22: Connection timed out

The manual update for a Shield seems to rely on using ssh, so I’m not certain I can actually force update it (and the menu tells me I’m up to date)…

Can I update the Shield by mounting the SC card on my PC and copying files from there ?

Hmmm. Something seems really broken with that system installation. If ssh isn’t working then there isn’t much I can think of other than re-flashing the SD card as mentioned here: help | monome/docs

EDIT : I just did a manual update as suggested above and everything works fine now… I should have done that first but hopefully if someone reads this and has the same symptoms they can try the same solution.

I actually just tried again with we@norns.local instead of the IP and it worked…

Cool I will go ahead and manually update. It need to use serial for norns and ssh for shield. Do I use the same file for both or do I need the .sha for shield in a separate process?

The same file for both, norns210927.tgz.

Ignore the file ending in .sha256, it is a cryptographic signature used by the menu system to verify the download.

I am having trouble using ssh to connect and connecting to serial. I have never had to manually update so forgive my ignorance. This is pretty frustrating cause everything was working perfectly not too long ago. I am pretty uncomfortable having to go through terminal to do all these things when I could just use maiden like two weeks ago :frowning:

Specifically when trying to use serial, after hitting enter it asks for my login. When I type it in it says login incorrect

When trying to update manually with norns shield I get

cp: cannot stat ‘/media/usb0/*.tgz’: No such file or directory after using

sudo cp /media/usb0/*.tgz ~/update/

@Aaah , sorry to hear about the troubles – i’d be happy to walk through over video chat if you want to pop an email over to help@monome.org

just to confirm, this is asking for the username and password for your norns. username by default is we, password by default is sleep (unless you’ve changed it).

it sounds like the USB drive does not have the this file copied to it. can you confirm that the USB drive is FAT-formatted and contains this file?

feel free to ping via email :gem:

Thanks for the response Dan. So i needed to make sure it was tgz instead of the .tar file, downloading file as seemed to make sure it was tgz. So my norns shield is now up to date, but the initial problem still exists. I am unable to connect to Maiden to see new scripts. It says not connected to Matron.

My norns and Norns shield have separate hostnames and passwords. Not sure what the problem is with maiden. Any help would be appreciated

glad the update worked, bummer to hear about continued connectivity issues. just to confirm, you’ve deleted and re-added your home network, yes?

only because it hasn’t come up yet, what happens when you:

  • connect the norns to wifi
  • use SSH to connect to it from another computer thru terminal
  • execute maiden catalog update (this should update maiden’s catalog)
  • if you haven’t gotten the o-o-o script (i think trying to download that is where this started, yeah?), execute maiden project install https://github.com/schollz/o-o-o (this should install the o-o-o script)

i’d be curious whether these command-line actions have the same issue as your browser connection

I have deleted and re-added my network.

When trying to execute either line (catalog update and project install) there is a time out.

ah! interesting – thank you for that. could you please share the output of:
journalctl -u norns-maiden
after getting these errors? (you might need to re-do the previous steps if you’ve already power-cycled)
