Oh man, first session with Norns and MLR was brilliant. Really found myself in an interesting place, though still scratching my head in terms of what was happening. Is there a rundown of how to use (other than the brief manual). I’m new to MLR fullstop, so maybe there’s an overview of another version that could help with getting my head around this?

I’ve been experiencing this same crash when syncing a digitone with norns via a usb to midi din cable. The only difference for me is that my grid will also almost completely light up before going dark and not responding. I also seem to get issues with my audio going in. I will start to get digital distortion. After rebooting and removing the usb midi cable the issue is gone.

ok (also @David_Rothbaum) it appears there is a bug that somehow affects the interaction of the grid when midi is attached as well. i’ll be looking into it (though i’m traveling for about a week, back on it soon)

I’ve had the same grid glitch after I updated to the latest firmware with midi cc enabled. I have a Faderfox connected to one of the USB ports and CC’s enabled. One time while playing mlr the grid just went blank as if it had become disconnected. Another time, all the lights just lit up. I managed to get the grid back by disconnecting and reconnecting but another time I had to reboot. It doesn’t happen everytime but definitely a glitch which I never saw before in the previous firmware.

IIRC, this has happened to me once without any external midi devices connected (mind you, it did happen after attempting to do some midi CC mapping earlier that day, in a different session).

So, what happened was:

  • Power on
  • Grid illuminates (MLR controls) but is otherwise unresponsive
  • Unplug/reconnect grid. I saw the boot-up sequence top-left with the lights, but then no illuminated buttons at all once MLR was loaded.
  • Re-booted Norns (via sleep) and everything has been fine since.

Just had the most amazing experience with mlr in the forest live sampling my mates Kalimba.
Some things I’m not sure how to do or if they are implemented.
Having record enabled for multiple tracks?
And a tap tempo INPUT? Either from grids or via a key on Norns.
Also a lowpass filter on each track would be ideal for reducing some aliasing noise.

never had it happen without midi attached at some point. almost every time i lose grid functionality if i start with midi/grid swap to ansible then go back to norns. mlr plays fine but the grid does not function at all.

I was playing with this for a couple of hours today - using it live with home made instruments- couldnt really work out what the third screen does. Also if Im simply using it as 4 loopers how do I clear one of the loops and start again?
I havent tried it at all with loaded in samples yet.

Finally just digging into Norns. I can get audio through the device. I can load a sample into MLR and manipulate it. But when I hit ‘record’ (after defining a loop), it doesn’t record any audio. I just updated Norns to latest system.

I gather that the far left button for that track is the ‘record’ button, yea!?

Did you go into screen 2 on the grid and do the two button push on the appropriate row to set the loop? The instructions say you need to do this first before toggling the rec/play function.
Also did you press the focus button for the row and fiddle with those two parameters for the loop you are working on.It took me a while to get the hang of that.
Also it is always worth going to the levels screen in Norns and checking the meters.

I have had similar issues without MIDI connected on several scripts. Where the Grid just loses its connection as described above (this usually happens after an engine has been switched for a specific script).

Back to MIDI:
MIDI is very unstable ‘universally’ – In foulplay for example, the MIDI clock does not stay in sync with the script and has a lot of jitter. Same goes for MLR.

Restarting the unit resets the behaviour. Works for about 1 min tops.

Yeah, this is precisely the thing that gets me every once in a while with Norns MLR — I’ll have forgotten to set the track/loop in motion on page 2, so even if I’ve armed the track and engaged record on page 1, nothing will get recorded. Got the hang of it pretty quickly, though!

Yes, you need to set your pattern length on the next page. I normally just open everything up on every channel to the full 16 steps and set all 4 channels to play, before hitting record

How does one clear the audio or buffer on a particular track or all tracks?

Elementary confusion…but my problem was that I was only using one input. So input 2 goes to tracks 2 and 4, in 1 goes to 1 and 3. I switched monitor to mono, and it fixed one combination (1 will now to go 4), but NOT in 1 to track 2. Weird. Still monkeying around.

update: after further experimenting, input 1 will go to tracks 1,3 and 4, but NOT 2. any ideas?

And what is the key combination to record a pattern?
