I removed the encoder cap and I can’t even turn the shaft itself. Seems defective. Will have to email monome.

Hi, already bumping into a little trouble :frowning: My initial test with my norns shield went fine and the grid also was just working BUT after that I installed some new scripts I bumped into a Duplicate Engine error and found out through Maiden that it was the Awake Rings conflicting and I did delete the folder BUt now the Grid is not detected in the Grid Device despite it lights up on connection and even tested ( the Grid ) on my PC with few max scripts… help?

hi hi! hope all’s well otherwise

just to confirm:

  • your grid operates as expected when using Max patches? it shows up in drop downs, LEDs for the patch light up (not just the initial burst when you plug in), keypresses all register?
  • on norns, if you head to SYSTEM > DEVICES > GRID after you plug in your grid, it should auto-announce itself on slot 1. if it doesn’t, try pressing K3 on slot 1 – do you not see your grid serial populate there, below none?

happy to help with more info!

Hi Dan, Grid use to work on my initial test with the Norns Shield and stopped working as described in my post, Yes the lights are bursting on connection but now on my laptop it gives me a unknown USB device ( device decription requst failed ) and now is not seen on my dropdown list in max…I’m terrified :disappointed_relieved: because it took so long to get ti fixed on my first Grid, how can it be? No it does not populate after pressing K3 on slot… and I only hooked the grid on my laptop and it use to work… connecting the grid back to the shield it lights up but no joy… feel unlucky, I remember you suggested me a sort of firmware reflash of the Grid but there must be a way to uderstand if that is recognized in a way

thank you for the additional info!
i sent you an email via help@monome.org :crossed_fingers:

Two questions.

First for the issue with the shield capacitors and PI 4 USB connector shorting. Would the connection between the PI and shield still be good if 1mm-2mm of shims/spacers/washers was used on the standoffs between the shield and PI?

Next question is is there any benefit with using a PI with 4-8 gigs of memory over the 2 gig ones?

Thank you.
Jay S.

Nope. No benefit. A 1GB would actually be the same as what’s on the pi3b+

Hi!
I have an extremely basic / stupid question.
Have had my eye on a Norns Shield for a couple weeks, but was just selling a piece of kit to facilitate buying it. However when I went to purchase it today i discovered the bundled Pi version has sold out.

So my very stupid question is; if i purchase the Shield, and then purchase a Pi4 seperately (have got one earmarked in stock in the UK) is this exactly the same end result as if i bought the bundle from monome.org ? I.e. is there anything in buying an off-the-shelf Pi4 that will not make it as “ready to go” as potentially waiting for the bundle to become available again? I’m pretty inexperienced with this kind of thing and whilst the assembly looks nice and straightforward, I’m concerned i’ll be potentially giving myself more work by buying seperately (which ironically i know was the original intention for the Shield!)

Yes, the bundled rpi4 hardware is the same as you would get from a normal retailer.

The bundle also includes an official RPI power adaptor which is generally sold separately. Using a properly rated power supply and power cable is critical for achieving reliable performance. The official RPI power supply is strongly recommended for this reason.

Amazing - last pieces of the puzzle there then - thanks!

@alancodger I went through that exact process and emailed Monome, they suggested I ship the grid’s board back so they can repair/replace it. I haven’t shipped it yet, curious if you ever got it working? Thanks in 20 characters!

Yes It was shipped back and replaced

Hey is anyone else having trouble logging onto norns.local? I was able to initially when I got my norns shield, but the last few days it’s been missing in action. Norns.community works fine. Just eager to download some additional scripts.

what happens when you try and visit norns.local? are you sure your norns is connected to wifi?

I’m trying to access norns.local from the browser on my computer, which worked until the last few days.

The reason for @reid’s question is that unlike norns.community, norns.local is actually a website hosted by your specific Norns. For you to be able to access it, your Norns has to be on and connected to the same wi-fi network as your computer.

if this happens after reflashing the norns disk, you may need to flush DNS cache on your browser / computer.

Thanks so much! That makes total sense. Thanks for making that distinction.

My 13 year old was very keen for me to post here to say that, in his words, “building a Shield is so easy even a 13 year old can do it” (tbh he probably has better fine motor skills than me, all i did was flash the SD and get the wifi / connection sorted…)

Are the board versions documented anywhere? I’ve had a hard time finding hardware revs to see where my bare 191106 fits in. Thanks.
