This is great! I would love this combined with an aluminium enclosure. If you feel like sharing the design when you’re done I would greatly appreciate it.

@CarlosUnch Thanks! I have a small cnc machine in my basement.

Yeah, it does reflect. I held it up under my lamp and the text was hard to read so that is a possible drawback. So far in usage (several places around the house) it hasn’t been an issue for me at all.

@terje Thanks! Will be happy to share when I get it ironed out.

What’s the size of the spacers there?

I’ll have to measure, but they are cobbled together from this assortment I bought on Amazon:

It’s not pretty and I need to update it.

I made two clear “top only” plates today while at the laser cutter.

But I’m wondering about size (outside edge dimensions) - is there a standard Hammond enclosure that one might aim for?

Here’s a DXF of top/bottom
norns-shield-top-bottom-clear.dxf (54.3 KB)

@okyeron @Oootini I was looking into it today and it seems like a 1590C will work. It’s slightly wider so if you want it centered then the usb jacks will be inside a bit, but I don’t think that will be an issue.

Currently staring at this on my desk. Fits just right: https://www.hammfg.com/files/parts/pdf/1590BBS.pdf

Top plate only - centered

Kinda eyeballed the sizing and corners, so might could use a little cleanup.

Sorry – forgot that mine is “taller” since I’m not cutting out a window for a screen. The 1590C is the same dimensions (confirm) but deeper.

Oooh dang, will be curious to see how the usb / audio /power jacks fit in one of those. Extending them, and fastening to the exterior would be amazing if possible.

here is mine with @andrew case without screen window
great thing

Yeah That looks about right. I’m going to drill/cut mine by hand, whenever i get a chance. Still testing and tweaking mine.

regarding an LCD window: polarizing film might be an interesting material to investigate: https://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/show-material/354-polarizing-film-light-gray

for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37L5nC0aOR8

normal norns (and TT) both have an acrylic screen cover. it’s never really been an issue vocalized by anyone here over the years.

I think I’m probably going to update my repo to contain both my “cutout” version, and this, which I greatly prefer. Sized it so that my skirted encoders end up flush with the top panel.

I tried smoked black on top, and it was decent enough but not quite as translucent as I hoped. So transparent it is.

Will write when the repo is updated.

with smoked acrylic and squared buttons this is very much my aesthetic taste

extremely well done

OK, updated my repo with the solid top as default:

head over to Github to get them. Be sure to a) check the holes being cut are suitable for your own knobs/switch caps, and b) the dimensions of the board have translated correctly from the DXF to whatever tool you’re lasercutting. Instructions are in the PDF.

Also, if you preferred the old version, that’s still there in a subdirectory.

Thank you so much for this. Can you please tell me what is the height of the whole unit with case? thanks!

Well, assuming 3mm acrylic and excluding the screws, pots, and knobs, the main assembly is

3 + 12 + 1.6 + 20 + 3 = ~40mm

deep.

Just a quick note re. the @infovore’s top/bottom panels and Adobe Illustrator;

If you’re planning to use Illustrator to modify the DXF file of the version with the display cutout, before having the panels cut, please make sure you check the scaling is correct.

I found I had to reduce the scale of the panels as they came out significantly larger than they should be, when I opened the DXF file in Illustrator (CC 2019 version).

This likely applies to both versions, but I’ve not tried the version without the cutout.

Incidentally, I’m modifying the design for Rogan PT-2 knobs and C&K PV buttons.

I’m also making the screen cutout smaller, to just show the active part of the display, as opposed to the whole of the display module itself.

Lastly, I’m considering adding the text “NORNS”.

If anyone is interested in my modified version, I’ve forked the original GitHub repo, and will upload my modified version at some point.
