You’d likely need to make a custom Linux/norns build to get a different display working on the device.

Hey all. I was hopping somebody could guide me to the best course of action with my little Norns shield.

At some point during my travels last year my shield had one of its hex screws come loose and it fell out before I could address it. Eventually a tiny nut and small lug fell out of the unit which I kept. Now my shield still operated without issue for the passed 6 months. This week the display would occasionally wig out and I realized it was a little loose. I didn’t have a wrench to open up the case and have a look.

My Norns won’t boot now. Power goes to the unit indicated by the red led but the green led does not light. What should I look for when I eventually open it up?

Cheers.

Edit: Thanks mods for relocating this post where it belongs. After some looking around for info on my specific issue I found some info. Thought I might have fried my pi board. turns out I needed to reflash my sd. Had nothing to do with my loose screws lol!

Hello, my Norns shield gets stuck on “restart” when I try to…restart. I recently deleted some files so that"s probably my mistake. It’s up to date and working fine otherwise.
Could you help me please?! Thanks in advance.

Hello,
for some reason I cannot update Norns, when I try to update Norns from the Norns itself, it goes through the proper process and then stops at “shutting down” - in which I unplug the power cable and plug it back in, and it comes back with the same version (200106).

When I try updating it from the computer by using etcher and fetching the latest image, the encoders don’t work when booted up.

Any idea?

If you can’t access it through maiden you’ll probably need to reflash a fresh installation on the SD card. You could copy over files from the card before doing that if you want to save your tapes, for example.

@Shamar a version that old can’t be updated via the menu anymore. For the fresh install check that you’ve got the right image there are several different ones depending on your hardware: both codec & rpi version matter. This page is the one to check: Release norns 220306 · monome/norns-image · GitHub

Thank you for the insight, I do suspect that is the case. I am using a DIY Norns build, and on the PCb board I see 200323, underneath the letters spelling out norns/shield

what image would I require? I am a total newb at this thing.

Welcome! You’ll need the pre-211028 shield version for either pi3 or pi4, depending on which Raspberry Pi your Norns is built with. (Easiest way to tell if you are unsure: How are you powering your Norns? Micro-USB cable = RPi3, USB-C cable = RPi4)

Thanks! I have an RPi3 I power on with a micro-USB cable and thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I initially just installed anything, and that’s probably why my knobs were not working.
Do you know where to download the image?

You can find the current latest images on the GitHub norns releases page (the one @edrapley linked to above). Based on your details you’ll need to download the norns220306-shield-pi3-cs4270.tgz image file, and follow the instructions for a fresh install on shield.

(Personally I found Raspberry Pi Imager to work better than Etcher but your results might differ.)

Fixed, re-copied files from a backup. Thanks a lot for your answers.

Thanks again for your help.

Would it be possible to dual boot a Norns shield? I’d like to use the Rasp Pi to run Dirtywave M8c.

Why not just put the Dirtwave M8c setup on a second SD card?

ah, ha, seems like a great idea! With the Shield+screen attached to the Pi, would the regular install of Ras Pi OS on a second card require some finagling to get it to work, i.e. able to use the screen? Ultimately, the buttons and keys would ideally be re-assigned to M8c - or an external controller could also be used via USB.

It would be great to see it work on a Norns Shield, but as far as I can see M8C still needs to use a teensy, or am I mistaken?
M8 also seems to use colours and higher screen definition than is available on the shield. I am not sure it can be implemented just by flashing it into an SD card… I would be very glad to be proved wrong though!

Yes should be on teensy though it can be attached to Norns / Pi via USB. You can then access - potentially - via browser on the Pi desktop later have the OS just boot into a browser. The screen and controllers would be the issues as you say.

At least the Norns could be a suitable midi router for an attached Anbernic handheld version of M8c - though there’s some issue with needing a USB adapter or bus. Starts to become a bit cumbersome.

hi everyone!
I have recently bought a norns shield 210330 PCB with SMD parts pre-soldered.
after some trial and error (not really pro in soldering, neither first timer, but probably this was the biggest project so far). Now everything is in place, and the norns starts up with the awake script (at the second startup it just directly goes to the main menu), but none of the encoders or buttons are working, or at least norns is not reacting to any of them… All parts have been ordered according to the BOM at github and octopart. Does anyone have any suggestion as to where to start looking for possible causes of this, where to start measuring at all? Thank you in advance.

If you can add a picture of the solder joints it should be possible to diagnose any physical issues.

Pictures of the encoder and buttons plus the header that links the PCB and RPi would be a good start.

In general check out how to reflow solder because best case you’ve got some bad joints.
