norns: update 230405 (hotfix 230614)

Been having an issue with old scripts ever since I updated to 230614. It only happens with certain scripts like lessconcepts, animator, mouse. When I load the scripts I get the initial splash screen but then the scripts seem to unload itself and i end up at the main page with it showing no script loaded, or script load error fail message. it only seems to be doing this with old scripts. newer scripts like dreamsequence seem to be fine. Awake seems to work fine too. Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

EDIT: Figured it out. I was working from a fresh disk image of norns so didnt have any of the old scripts loaded. All my scripts that didnt work required certain other scripts to work like molly the polly, passerbye, and the bangs. mystery solved

Really sorry for childish questions ( But - norns and MBP are on the same network, I can install scripts from a command prompt. But when going to SYSTEM>UPDATE on Norns it show “checking for update” forever. What have I missed ?

Hmmm. I was on 220306. After multiple identical tries it could load and install the update. Will check if things are working.

When I choose system update on my Shield, it just hangs on ‘checking for updates’.

Is there a way for me to upgrade from 22036 to 230526 without going this route?

If your norns version is too old, it is not updatable through the systems menu, but see the instructions referenced here for a relatively easy fix: WiFi / update / files | monome/docs

Thanks for your reply, I have 220306 firmware installed, on a Norns Shield. From what i have read, the only way to update this particular version is through the system update on the device. I was wondering if there is another way, because system update doesn’t work, just hangs.

I think that you should go for the same backup and reflash procedure as described in the link. Then you can be sure that you have the very newest version installed.

That’s my issue - I have 220306 and I’m using Norns Shield - I cannot flash the 230526 as it’s for regular Norns. And my Norns won’t update from System > Update - maybe network issues.

What I’d like then is to SSH into my Norns and maybe update from command line - or is there another way? Norns shield downloadable firmware latest is 220306 - if System Update is working would my Norns install a later version than the one at Github March 7 2022 ?

Ultimately I want to update to use the Concrete script which isn’t loading. Getting init errors.

just for clarification, we do fully support any shield we sold directly, and (to the best of our abilities) we try to be helpful whenever we’re contacted about other builds. that caveat is in place because, most often, folks run into trouble due to assembly issues which we simply can’t diagnose because we weren’t involved. but if there’s something we can help with, we always do

you can run the update commands manually. of course it needs a working network connection!

in the abstract, the steps consist of:

run wget to fetch the release archive and checksum (listed at https://raw.githubusercontent.com/monome/norns/main/releases.txt)
verify and unpack to /home/we/norns/update/
run /home/we/norns/update/update.sh

same steps, but at least you will be able to see errors. there could be something unforseen with that particular version jump.

Trouble I have with Wifi is a network where username and password are required… Norns only asks for password for regular Wifi connection… So… if i can just use another machine and download that would be easier.

this is the most relevant information provided so far, from which we can infer that you’re not actually connected to a network.

network connectivity is essential to get anything out of this system, so that should be addressed first. your options are:

change your network so it doesn’t require a login, or use a different network
use an ethernet cable to connect to your network

alternatively, you could go visit a more standard network, do the update, get a few scripts, and then connect to your computer via hotspot mode for manual file transfers.

It’s even more complicated than that.

I’m in China. GitHub is blocked. At work I use company VPN but the network requires user plus password. At home I can connect Norns to broadband router but it’s not got a VPN on it - the VPN is on iPhone and MacBook. When trying iPhone as hotspot it doesn’t work - probably not very strong connection.

So… I think by the looks of the Lua file I could download the compressed files first locally - to the Norns. Change the paths. And have it run the entire update process locally and not call out to GitHub. Would that work?

manual steps then (slightly adapted from above):

acquire, somehow, this file: https://github.com/monome/norns/releases/download/v2.7.7/norns230614.tgz
connect to your norns, somehow, either via hotspot or ethernet. copy this file above to /home/we/update/ (you may need to make this folder)
log in via SSH (instruction in docs) then

cd ~/update/
tar xzvf norns230614.tgz
cd 2303614
./update.sh

restart the device

you’ll be updated!
