thanks to this thread I checked this out, it is an excellent compact exhibit  it’s up until march 23. some pics below

the ā€œambisonic cubeā€ in the middle aims a looping compilation of works by many of the makers, and field recordings by the curator, right at your ears in the middle. however if you go you should know that the exhibit room is right off the library entrance, and so in addition to the intended soundscape you will also be hearing the sound environment in which the room is embedded, which includes the security guard and her friends, the maintenance workers emptying the recycling, people beeping in and out, slamming the door, etc. since the work featured is mostly ambient/noise, it all ā€˜works’ of course!

Yes, I saw that in the experimental music notation thread and its definitely on my list. Sadly I just miss the kevin beasley mic-ed up cotton motor installation which is exactly the sort of thing I like.

… love your reflection in the random noise generator pic.

Other Londoners are telling me Dumbo is the cool area for bars and stuff. (?) Got my map and am excited.

thanks

Dumbo is cool; I usually go there during the daytime so I’m not sure what the scene is like at night. I’m partial to the bars in the East Village. I also like hotel lobbies, like ACE hotel even though it gets kinda busy, and the Algonquin and Iroquois hotels in the theater district. And there are a ton of little divey spots all over Brooklyn and lower Manhattan if you’re interested in that. There are cute places in the West Village. I love going to 8th Ave all the way from 14th street to the park for food, there’s all different kinds of cuisine and I usually find a great place I’ve never been to before.

I would really say just pick a neighborhood and explore!

dumbo is very pretty and picture-esque, worth a visit for sure. That said, afaik the food/bar scene around there isn’t great. That said, Brooklyn Heights is just a bit south of there and could certainly accommodate those things. I’d say hit DUMBO during the day to look around and then head elsewhere after!

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to start a modular hang/workshop in Manhattan at the studio I work out of, alongside one of the studio’s owners who happens to be a synth head too! We had one earlier this week with some friends and it was super fun.

If you’re interested, please message me!

We are hosting an event scores marathon in conjunction with Double Negative an exhibition about art works made with text. Please join us this Thursday, 7pm at 320 West 23rd St.

Also could use suggestions for text-based scores we could perform and discuss. Maybe worth a new thread to talk about in detail… and if enough interest, could organize a separate event around text and sound.

Please join us March 14 for a reading of Plays Modern by artist Mary Lum, and afterwards, an Event Scores Marathon, performing and experimenting with instructions by Bruce Nauman, George Maciunas, Alison Knowles, Yoko Ono, Sol Lewitt, La Monte Young, George Brecht, Erik van Lieshout, Jonas Mekas, Hassan Khan, Rob Pruitt, Erwin Wurm, and Lawrence Weiner, plus possible group readings of works still to be discovered. Bring your favorites!

NOTE: we could use a variety of objects and musical instruments (especially horns), microphones, at least one pitcher/bowl combo, and a couple of bicycles. Thanks!

Dang, I missed this! Pauline Oliveros has some amazing ones of course, and there are a lot in the book ā€œSource.ā€ Also, Stockhausen’s Aus den sieben Tagen. Please let me know if you’re doing another one of these, I have some directional scores I’ve made myself that I’d love to try with a group!

Thanks! This is great. I hadn’t seen the Source book - looks like they have some of the original issues of Source at Printed Matter.

Not sure if anyone caught this but it looks cool. Can’t say anything about the space, as it’s brand new and controversial to say the least…

Let us know if you’re planning on going!

Same! And knockdown’s big room is actually pretty great as big open warehouse spaces go.

Yeah, certainly have some feelings about hudson yards, same with all the new luxury buildings just south in Celsea. Something tells me that they’re just more low occupancy 4th, 5th, 6th ā€œhomesā€/ parking places for absurd amounts of cash of morally questionable provenance.

Looks like a performance I’m interested in though.

Thanks for posting this. As a UK tourist walking the Highline on Thursday I was asking myself what the hell is this meant to be. It isn’t quite canary wharf type thing ( which is a 90’s London development). Love the swipe at Thomas Heatherwick as a millionaire whisperer. Strangely the basket thing has just opened - ahead of many of the pathways leading to it… Still there’s a good opportunity for field recording building sites from the high line - if that’s your thing.

Feild recordings in that area can be fantastic, and by the bizarre heliport right there too.
