A buddy using my Mac SE in my college dorm room in 1988. People would line up to play Tetris on it, which, other than writing papers, was its primary use.

My first exposure to MIDI sequencers was Cakewalk running on an IBM XT as part of a class at the local community college. The second semester exposed me to Opcode Vision and this strange and marvelous program from IRCAM called Max (v0.8 iirc) running on a new SE/30. …then there was M.

Ah, this reminds me that I need a replacement battery for my 2006 white MacBook (first generation). I retired it in 2012 when I got my current MacBook Pro… but I still have an old film scanner which works with the old computer…

I’ve recently dug out my old G3 with MacOS9 and decided to get it up and running again!
Looking for recommendations for good OS9 software! I’ve got photoshop and reason on there, but hoping to dive into some more hidden gems of the software (music related or non) if anyone has any suggestions.

i was right after you in ‘92 at Stevenson College, took intro to electronic music with Mumma. great times on unix in those days, you could write elaborate plan files and really meet people. such a cool community and i loved the feel of terminal linux, you felt smart even if you were just a casual user. i have very similar photos of my friends in surf tshirts hunkered over SEs in dorms rooms. did yours have the moose that would read text in a robot voice??

anyway, here’s my 2004 G4 tower, running Reaper really well with my 10+ yr old Maudio Delta 1010. it won’t even run Dexed so all it does is multitrack. got it for $25.

I don’t remember the moose! I do remember trying to put HyperCard to good use, but I never managed to sort it out properly. Played a good deal of Lode Runner on that SE, though.

talking to some cousins
at the auto parts store yesterday…
austin’s dad fixes up old Schwinn bikes really nice
bruce’s dad was a big part of the OC Hot Rod car scene
got a new perspective on working with old Mac’s
and how it could be thought of kinda like a Hot Rod
(just like that scene, there’s many different levels
at one end, you strip it down, clean all the parts,
get new parts if necessary, put it back together
and keep it spotless for the next car show /// other cars,
might be in a constant state of repair, keep it drivable
and see how far you can take it)

I put High Sierra 10.13.6 on this MBP 2012
and now it’s rockin’ a firewire apogee duet
with this American d7t mic from the 1940’s (made in Los Angeles)
as well as Orca and Tidal at the same time
(Pilot, SuperDirt, with BlackHole)

my dad was a “car guy” so everything looks like a car metaphor to me. in this case maybe less so the jacked hemi with a dubble bubble weber on each of the eight cylinders kinda thing, but that a vehicle is a sum of its parts. mac put a lot of value into their earlier hardware only to dissipate a lot of that with the constant capitalist software/upgrade cycle. perfectly natural that we should seek to get that value back and at least they had the foresight to base later models in unix so we can. I was encouraged to see in the linux thread people loading linux on older macs, like…duh.

I’d very much like to “hot rod” the tower I pictured with some quiet fans, it’s really the only thing keeping it from daily use. wonder if I can get a RPi PCI shield…? :thinking:

High Sierra is finally losing support from Apple (starting in Nov 2020), and I thought I’d give a go at upgrading my mid 2011 21.5” iMac GPU so I can run a supported OS. I installed some extra RAM a few years ago (going from 4gb to 20gb). This would obviously be a more involved task, but while I’m at it, I may stick an additional ssd in there.

I had an Nvidia K2100m graphics card arrive this week, just need to go pick up some thermal past and a few specialty bits.

I also found my spouses 2007 MacBook from college while cleaning/organizing our basement. The screen doesn’t want to display, but I was able to power it on. This may be a good candidate to tinker with assuming I can get the display working again.

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012, and have been running logic x and able ton in it just fine, I’m still on Mavericks OS, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

you should check if the hardware is supported for newer OS.
I have upgraded the HDD to 1TB SSD (Samsung EVO) on my work imac from the same era. Everything works fine except the thermal sensor. I had to install a vent regulator to not have the vent blowing constantly. However, it will not upgrade past High Sierra because it’s not supported.

Luckily, this macrumors forum has a wealth of knowledge and information about how to go about updating your GPU!

Considering the ssd, I do remember coming across this OWC thermal sensor. At ~ 40$, it’s a bit pricey for a cable, especially as heat is probably less of an issue moving from an hdd to an ssd. In any case, I would probably do an ssd upgrade with one of those just to be “by the book” and not have to mess with the fan speed through some 3rd party app like smcFanControl.
