It’s from the X-15 manual, which I’ve been consulting recently while working out if I can use alternate PSUs or not; sadly the answer seems to be no without introducing a hum to a tape deck which seems to prefer 60hz supply to the 50hz available. The original PSU is fine if a little chunky, but being from the 1980s, before voltage switching was standard, only accepts 110v with the consequent need for a step-down transformer from 230v here.

Consulting the X-15 service manual, the power input is specified as 11-15V DC, 350 mA max. I don’t know in which situations you’re getting hum, but there’s really no way for the machine to be sensitive to the AC switching frequency going into the transformer when the PSU output is plain DC. What’s the rated output of the original PSU? Based on the specs I’d expect it to run fine off a modern 12V supply.

I would hope that’s the case for sure.

Hmm, it doesn’t say much more than 120V AC 60hz 6W (Fostex Model 8070). I’ve tried with a few 12v adapters, each of which had their own problems; the best was an old laptop supply, but it’s noticeably noisier than the Fostex PSU.

I suppose with old gear it’s worth trying to find a linear power supply with proper ground continuity. Modern switching supplies like laptop ones often tend to 1) be noisy 2) have a floating ground, either of which may mess with devices that don’t expect those.

Eg. some pedal manufacturers still make 12VDC linear regulated supplies I think, and specialty electronics stores often carry one or two.

(There are also “audiophile linear power supplies” that cost an arm and a leg and are no better in this case, so they’re probably best avoided.)

Not sure if that’s the actual problem / whether that will help, but if the power supplies you’ve tried have been mostly random modern ones, then trying a linear might be a way to go.

Just ran into this on one of my favorite tech sites, and I thought people might enjoy it here. It’s a wonderful story of new and old spanning over 50 years.

I’ve never understood the thing about picking a size of speaker for a size of room. What if I want to hear low frequencies in a small room?

If you also want it clean and not too resonant you’ll have to seriously absorb (very) low frequencies, which can be problematic in a small space, ironically.

What if I want to hear a 40Hz wave? The wavelength is 28 feet, so with a small room you’d have a better chance of hearing it down the hall or in the next room.

TIL I’ve never heard less than 114hz in my 3m room!

We just did a big’ish job putting together and installing a bunch of proper cupboards in the house we live in for bedding, towels, curtains and all that. At the same time we went through everything we owned in that sector and washed most of it (my s.o. loves hoarding fabric and I don’t mind that at all).

Which is when I remembered we have at least two sets of age old curtains from a local less known but long standing designer Perttu Mentula, including this “Teleprint” pattern (online picture, ours have yellow dots):

Now I’m thinking they’re going to be just the right vibe for my work / music room once I actually get the curtain rods installed in the first place.

But yeah, we have a lot of old cool looking curtains and tablecloths. I love them a lot more than most of the modern ones I tend to stumble upon locally. Another one among my favorite patterns is by a more known local designer Marjatta Metsovaara, called Pitsi, I think from the '70s, which we have just enough of to work as a tablecloth:

I had the MT1X (previous model) with almost identical aesthetics. Now I’m wondering where it is - doesn’t seem like I’d give it away.
