There might be a way, but it’s tricky and involve some maths. I’m not home so I cannot make an example to demonstrate this, but you could do something like swing using the $ operator and bpm: command.

If you don’t have the $ operator in your Orca version, you can also do ;bpm:120, and in the UDP menu point to Orca itself, so you can change the bpm of orca dynamically.

To add swing, you could hit the first bar at 120bpm, and then change before the second bar to 100bpm and then change back to 120bpm before the 4th bar. That would give something like swing. I’ll have to test this theory, but you could look into that in the meatime.

ok thx ive had a play but cannot figure this UDP stuff out…where is the menu?
Im using orca on osx and do not have the $ op

edit: im still feeling like there is some way to create these offset bangs using the A op or something…still having a play…feels like im getting closer

Hey, I’m having trouble with semitones… how would I transpose a C major 7 (C E G B) by a perfect fifth (G B D F#)? Using the A operator (adding 4) I get G I K M, when I’m expecting G I K m.

Orca has no real concept of an octave, or a note. Instead of C E G B, you’d need to use the 12 key numbers 0 4 7 b.

If you need to preserve octave value:

I’m glad to be back :slight_smile: I have a lot to catch up on, there have been so many changes to ORCA - you’ve been hard at work!

I’m actually considering just making a video just devoted to the many updates and changes since my last videos - it may be necessary at this point. Is there any place I can find a summary of what’s changed over time? I’ve been listing the things I’ve noticed / seen in your update emails, but just figured I’d ask.

FWIW, personally id find that super helpful. After some heavy noodling with it a couple of months ago, ive since been busy with life and havent been able to keep up.

now that the dust has settled im ready to jump back in, but other than cursory glances at this thread, im pretty unfamiliar with the updates that have been made. I imagine many others would find it helpful too.

Hey Allie, just finished watching your Doubleknot tutes.These are great fun and really give insight into the philosophy of using the architecture.
Mainly want to thank you for the Orca videos, really helpful to me starting off with this environment.

I find the opposite a lot of the time where i end up with swing grooves over straight beats, i find just mixing odd and even numbers as clock/iterator etc values and stacking random and iterative functions on timing will deliver :slight_smile:

I don’t have something like that, since the last video you made, so many things changed, a lot of the changes have to do with standardizing the position of the ports, and some operators have changed too.

But generally, operators like (add a b), have turned into the side-by-side format (a add b) to allow for better combination like the inverted pyramid:

A lot of the changes also didn’t concern most of the users, have to do with file management, and injecting patterns quickly for livecoding settings. One of the larger general change is the transpose table.

In Max I like to make “humanizing” subpatchers where I add a random delay amount to incoming triggers, so sometimes things line up exactly but it’s rarely everything.

If you want a literal “swing” without affecting the base BPM you can send alternating beats to two different midi channels (say, 9 and 10) and add a MIDI delay to channel 10, so 9 is always on the downbeat and 10 is swung. Then connect those midi channels to the same instrument (or two identical copies if your synth software doesn’t allow for that).

I’m also recording myself either finger drumming or playing actual drums and using orca to trigger those loops, because sometimes machines just can’t get that feel (thinking J Dilla, Thundercat, Burial).
